Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() oak73 - 2012-01-04 12:08 PM Well I just got on a scale last night...wow. 230lbs! Im 5'8" and yes over weight. Not sure what weight is ideal for someone my size. When I was in top shape I was 160lbs. Im hoping by my first triathlon in August I will be at least 180. Im not setting any weight loss goal because I dont want to be dissapointed. I do know that by getting off the couch and training for this new sport I am sure to lose weight so anything is better then nothing. Also someone is giving me an excersise bike today. Its not a computer trainer but its in great(only used twice) shape...lol. So now I have no excuse not to ride durning the cold winter months! Thanks again for everyones engouragement and support! Havent figured out how to add everyone on my training logs yet so bare with me on that. Happy training everyone. Okey
That's so cool... congrats on the exercise bike! I'm sure that you will find yourself getting fitter and burning calories more efficiently as you train. You are right about that! Way to focus on the process. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ecpasos - 2012-01-03 8:59 PM Here are some good sites I use: http://www.wholelifeeating.com/ - lots of recipes http://paleoista.com/ -- a very successful AG triathlete runs this one http://whole9life.com/ -- site is down at the moment, but normally is up. They promote Paleo eating Highly recommend reading Paleo Diet for Athletes by Cordain and Friel. They modify the diet for athletes. For example, they add high glycemic carbs to the post workout windows to maximize and speedup recovery. There are some other things too, but that is one of the big changes that helps when you are putting in hard workouts regularly. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Paleo Diet for Athletes by Cordain and Friel. Excellent book! Thanks! I'll have two big issues with a change.... crackers/hummus, and the evaporated milk I put in my coffee every morning. But this book is great...it tells you exactly WHAT and WHEN which is great for the before the workout, after the workout, during the workout... which can be a challenge. I need that kind of guidance. |

I'm in the same boat; I'm signed up for a tri in April, but a heel injury this fall has really diminished my fitness level. I'm hoping to take some pounds off and reduce inflamation by doing a two-week fast before kick-starting the triathlon training program. Hang in there... How did you hurt your heel? When do you start your fast? Do you use a particular fast? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steph, thanks for the Paleo sites. I will be finetuning things. 1800 cals a day for this workout load won't cut it. IU could easily add 400 cals around the workouts. I plan to use fluids for that with some protein. Hearing about branched amino acids too. Have to check that out. They are proteins too. VQ or Vision Quest is a coaching group based in Chicago. Run by Robbie Ventura, formerly a cycling pro with Lance Armstrong. Great guy. Others here are with the Chicago based programs. He has one coach downstate in Illinois and I am lucky enough to be with him. He sets out a week worth of bike workouts and adds in the swim and runs I do. He has made me so much better. If not for him, I would never have made IronMan. Coaches are great. There are inexpensive ways to get good coaching too. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey peeps,
With all the talk about paleo I started wondering if anybody is a vegetarian. For the last 14 months I've eaten a mostly veg diet - she says after just eating bacon Now on the training front, I was supposed to swim yesterday morning, but since I swim at an outdoor pool and it was forecasted to be below freezing; i slept in. Decided to do a round of p90x2 after work, but had to stop after about 15 mins b/c I was nauseous. It was not exercised induces as I started out that way. This am was to be a run, but once again it was colder then I have running clothes for; so I slept in. I'm really getting a lot of sleep these days! I will run after work and I will go swimming Friday am. Happy Thursday all!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ann Marie... My husband and I decided to sort of lean into the veg thing. Weekday vegetarians I guess you'd call us. The Morningstar Farms stuff is very tasty, but yes.... deadly sodium. I'm going to try to make my own bean burgers...how hard could it be? My sister sent me applewood smoked bacon from Wisconsin. OH MAN. The veg thing is out-the-window until it's gone. Mmmmmmm. I find I can't really go without meat. Tried many times so I just ease around it... turkey, fish, but sometimes, I need red meat. I have iron poor blood and take a supplement every other day already. Enjoy your bacon. I am. ![]() |

They are really made for a computrainer, but I can make the adjustments on my spin bike. Give it a try on your exercise bike and see how it goes. You may have to get creative, but it could be fun! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() All, I hope Steph doesn't mind me throwing this out here for the group. I thought this was a good article. Most resolutions don't last very long. Here are some things to help keep them going. I've read (and found to be true for me) that it takes 21 days to develop a habit. If you can hang on and take action on a goal for that long your chances increase. Good luck and hang on. |

That's why I find keeping my BT logs so very helpful. When I get discouraged or depressed I go back a few months (or to last year) and see just how far I've come. Last year at this time I was excited because I finally was able to run 1 and 1/4 miles without walking at a 12ish pace. Now I run 6 with no problem at an 11:30 pace. It's all about the babysteps. |

The 10 Commandments of New Year's Resolutions Yes, a good article. I like the Simplify and Connect ones. Keep it simple. So many people make these extremely grand resolutions that are too broad, trying to change too many things at once. It gets overwhelming. And as far as developing an active lifestyle goes...Connect. Having a buddy (or more) to do things with is very motivating. It's why we all posting on this forum - to connect with others with the same interest. There have been many times when I wasn't feeling like getting up at 5 am, but knowing my friends would be there waiting gave me the extra push I needed to get moving. And for those of you who have sent me inspires asking how my "no sugar for January" is going. Day 5 and still on the wagon. I'll admit it's been hard. I do love my desserts. I have substituted dried apples and cherries for a little after meal sweetness. The ones from Trader Joe's do not have any added sugar or sulfites. Edited by suzimmer 2012-01-05 8:22 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Decisions. Decided not to go to Disney to run the Marathon. I'm not ready, my foot is certainly not ready, and I don't want to make a big injury mistake. SO our friends will come today, fetch my husband, and go without me. ::sigh:: On the plus side, I get to work out with my team this weekend, organize my life for my new job that starts Monday, and clean all the sugar, flour, crackers etc. OUT of the house. Decided to switch the ING Marathon to the half Marathon. I won't be ready for the full here either. If my foot cooperates I might be able to PR on the half. I do like the distance and this will be my third in 3 months. The Marathon will happen, but it will have to wait until I've sorted out this foot thing. My husband is more relieved than I am. He hates to watch me suffer. Guess it's time to give him a break! New Years Resolutions. Eating cleaner. My husband lives and works near Atlanta during the week. Our house up there is all set up for him. He runs a little over a mile to and from work every day and spends hours in the company gym etc etc. Eats perfectly at the company cafeteria... then he comes home on the weekends and goes nuts here. No more. This holiday season it's been great having him around but the food situation has been insane! I only gained 3lbs, but I feel like crap! Paleo-style eating will be great for me. I hope the withdrawal isn't too tough! Suz is right, connection and simplify are the most important,. I'll keep reminding myself of that. I have about 25 runner friends who are starting their Ragnar Relay weekend today. I got out my binoculars and I can see them skedaddling over the Rickenbacker! I'm going to get on my bike today and ride along the route...cheer them on. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steph, Wow, you are my hero! You made the SMART decision. Sometimes you have to sacrifice now, for the short term, to see the benefit for the the long term. I can say that to others, but acting on it myself...well I'm still working on that. One day I want to run the Disney Marathon, or any Disney race for that matter. They have the best "bling". Susie |

I am not sure if anyone has seen these you tube workouts, but a friend sent me the below link. It looks insane and thought I would pass it along. There are supposed to be 3 minute versions out there as well, but I haven't looked for them yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Pdyy6Hy5XRg Onto breaking news: Christmas cookies are all gone. I wish I could say I know exactly what happened to them, but I have no idea. Have a great weekend everyone. |

It went something like this video but for 45 minutes. It was about 3 weeks after completing an Ironman so I thought I was in good shape. I quickly realized (after nearly puking... several times) that Ironman shape is quite different than this kind of shape. |

When I did my 1st one, I didn't postpone and aggravated an injury. You did the smart thing. Good for you! Suz - the Disney bling IS awesome. I have 6 or 7 medals, several pounds in weight. I'd like to get one from each race. |

New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() I started the master cleanse fast on Jan. 3, so I'm on day 4 and feeling very good today (first few days had a headache and felt listless). Feel like I can start spinning class next week if my energy level keeps up. Will postpone running another week; still dealing with plantar fasciitis pain that flared up this fall. It's much better than it was a month ago, but I'm afraid to start pounding on it with any high-impact exercise. Thanks for the shoe recommendation, Steph. You've got me looking into minimalist running as maybe a solution to my heel problem. |

You've got me looking into minimalist running as maybe a solution to my heel problem. Might also want to look into trigger point roller for that heel area. When I was in my local running store, mention that I have what feels like a bruise on the inner left heel that only bothers me intermittently (sp?) when I first wake up and then goes away. They told me it was the beginnings of PF and that using rollers would help keep it from becoming full blown. Not sure if it would do anything to help a full blown case but can't hurt to search the web a bit. |
