Hmm....tricky situation. Re-plant the cukes obviously. In my experience they are weanies with any cold but soak up the heat like champs. I had some cold nights, down in the 30s, but never another frost. My Eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes looked like they took a lick, but they came back. I fed them and picked any fruit that showed up for about a week so the plant could focus on getting some good foilage back. Any nurseries around you still have tomato and pepper starts? Might hold off for a few days to see how they respond and go buy some starts if you need to. |

I had a similar issue with my tomatoes last week. A few of them have leaves that look like they got frostbitten. I pulled those leaves off but the rest of the plant seems to be doing well still. I'd keep an eye on them, they should be okay. |

Those look great!! A green that Kermit would be jealous of! I am sooooo close to picking my first hot peppers. A few cayenne are about 4 inches long now, so just a little bigger and then let them ripen to red. Got some deer sausage in the freezer waiting on it so I can make some hangover curing biscuits and gravy. I really need to snap some more pictures now that the rest of my yard is in order. Speaking of which... I spent the holiday weekend on the non-vege section of my flora. Re-did my front beds, moved some azaleas, and all sorts of back breaking stuff in the heat. Trying to give that house some curb appeal before we put it on the market. I crashed in bed at 6:30 on Monday night and didn't wake up until 6:30 on Tuesday morning. 12 hours of glorious sleep! |

Nice, those are huge! I said the same thing to a girl at the gym last night and nearly got slapped. I had some issues with some stuff not coming up but I determined that it was due to some old seed packets getting mixed in with my new stuff. I had to replant a few things. After a couple of weeks the corn and potatoes look great. The sunflowers are coming up well and the lettuce and watermelon are up but much slower. I have carrots and a lot of different herbs kicked off in a starter setup that should make it out to the garden this weekend. |

Funny, I said that to a dude last night at the gym and he just looked depressed. |

Well by now you already know whether the plants will make it or not. Generally, if the growing tip is still green the plant will recover. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Off of page 2 with my first pickings of the season! We've got some 90 degree temps coming, so I decided to pull off some of the larger bell pepper fruits thinking the plants might do better off without them. The smallest one there is about baseball size for reference. Not huge, but certainly good enough for cooking. |

With enough food and a big enough pot, you can grow just about anything. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I may have lost my cherokee purple mater. It is absolutely huge right now. About six feet tall, fruit everywhere, big sprawling branches... and an afternoon storm blew hard enough that it broke down it's cage and I found it laying on the ground. That's the second time it's happened. I hope the plant is healthy enough to survive it, but it wasn't the pot that blew over. It bent over at the base and looked like it may have pulled some roots. |

Last year I bought half a dozen raised planters and tried to grow tomatoes, herbs, jalapenos and cherry peppers. The only thing that really grew well was the peppers, basil, and mint. Pretty much everything else limped along. Yard is on the south side of the house. I have enough room to put a couple larger planters in there, but max would be 4'x2'. What should I grow, other than more herbs and peppers? Hmmm...give me a little more info. What happened with your tomatoes? I think everybody has the right to fresh tomatoes and basil in the summer--the freakin best combo ever. Add some fresh moz, xvoo and good salt--THE BEST! What do you like to eat? Beans? Cukes? You could do some vertical stuff, if you're into those kinds of things. I'll eat any vegetable, we are just trying to figure out what thrives best in a small area. I have a long wall on the back of the house I could trellis. The tomatoes plants grew but only produced a few small tomatoes. Yeah, nothing means summer like fresh tomatoes and caprese salad. I could eat caprese every day of my life and never get sick of it. I wish I was eating it right now Bummer about your tomatoes last year. What variety? Were they heirloom or a hybrid? I love some of the heirloom varieties, and I grow them every year, but I also usually plant some hybrid with disease resistance so I CMA. I love tomatoes so much, that I would give them a shot again, even though last year was a bust. Cherry tomatoes will often work well in that type of situation--even in a large container--and they're nice for caprese and an afternoon fresh off the vine snack. (Soooo hungry) I'm going to vote for some nice bean and cuke trellises on your back wall, tomatoes in your raised bed/containers, basil, rosemary, and any other herbs you like. I'd like to hear what others think though...anyone have any good ideas for Brian? Quick update. I went with a few patio tomato plants in containers, herbs, and 3 different kinds of peppers. Also catnip, which came back from last year, and it's funny to see the cats sit in the window and stare at the pot. I never got around to doing a trellis. Is it too late to start beans or cukes? |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think you can start beans and cukes still. My cucumbers grow pretty much all summer until the cold weather comes. Also, a side note. One way you can make cages or trellis' is with welded wire fencing (or any other kind of fencing). I took a 50' roll of welded wire fencing and cut it and used the wires to roll into it cages for all of my tomato plants. I ended up building over 20 tomato cages out of it. I also had some left over from making my bean/pea trellis' that I used. |

Next year, in a new house and backyard, I'm going to put some time, effort, and money into some permanent tomato boxes with a nice looking wood cage. Then use them to grow some greens during the "cold" season. |
