There is virtually no way to train for the cold swim (in face area)except getting in the water everyday when  your in Coeur D Alene...you will have plenty of company. However I believe my ice baths after hard workouts helped the rest of my body as they seemed to get easier and my face was the only problem, However when I arrived in CDA on Tuesday I went for a quick swim with my wetsuit and just doubled my swim cap...I got out and walked directly over to Ironman village and bought a hoodie and booties and if they would have let me wear gloves I would have bought those also.

That said race day wasn't that bad even though I doubted myself all week

If you are lucky enough to live near a lake you can always get in it early in the spring when it might still be colder. Obviously as it warms up, that doesn't help much but at least you can know more about what it feels like.  I'll prolly be wearing a neoprene cap. I do have booties but found that after about 20 minutes in the water my feet are as cold with them on as without so I'll leave them off for the race.

I'll also prolly double up on the swim caps too with the race one and a silicone one.  Also what can help is get the bigger goggles to cover more of your face.

I did see a lot of big goggles also, good point, The first 10-20 minutes getting used to the water is key, never wore booties before but I was glad to have them. For the other reason to stand on the sand before and run after the swim.

Has anyone tried applying vaseline to their face during the swim to keep their face warmer?  If so, did you have any trouble with it affecting your goggles?

that seems like a great idea until you are done swimming and in T1 trying to get it off so you can get on your bike to ride.  I don't think if properly applied that it would affect your googles. If I was to do it I would do it after having my googles in place.

I didn't see anyone doing it at CDA last year, and I think if it was a good idea a lot of folks would have been doing it or recommended it.

One good tip I used  is to get it over with, meaning lift your face out of the water as a little as possible the first 10 minutes of the swim. It will sting a bit and be uncomfortable, but then it's over.

I read about someone trying it in 2011 that it actually got all over their goggles and they had a really hard time seeing while swimming.  I wouldn't do it.

The cold really isn't bad after the initial shock... and I think that initial shock is going to be bad whether you are wearing vaseline or not.

I start the Fink 30-week plan on Monday.  Went out today to run the LT field test to calculate my HR zones... brutal!!!

Started with a 15-minute warmup and then began the test.  Went 7:27/mi for 10:07 then hit the lap button on my Garmin and went 7:36/mi over the next 20 minutes - which averaged a 162 LTHR.

That seems low based on my HR for 10k and HM races this year, I was thinking it would be over 170, but I gave it pretty much everything I had... almost puked about three times (Thanksgiving over-indulgence didn't help).  I'm 53 years old, so the 220 minus age thing would be 167 - I guess I'll trust the test.  I'm certainly not doing another one for awhile.

@ Private Idaho, I took a test like that with my coach last year, and was a few beats less then the 220-51 thing 169, I was 166. I was also disappointed thinking I had a great heart and would be higher. The truth told to me is we probably are, but for training purposes they side on the low side. Don't sweat it weather it was Thanksgiving, anxious, not a perfect nights sleep ect ect, we rarely go into these test 100 percent. Like you said train by the test, and if we have more we don't know about that's a good thing.

Can anyone explain where and how long the no passing zone is on the bike?

If I remember right. The first no passing zone is on the last down hill on the way back to town and is not to long. I think at about mile 50ish. The next one is a little after that still on 95 closer to where you will turn to go to NorthWest BLVD. I think and I might not remember right but it last close to 1/4 a mile. Starts just before the over pass and goes until you are off the on-ramp and heading back to town. Also when you are heading onto 95 going up the on-ramp is a no passing spot.

They did not slow me down to much last year. I think I lost maybe a minute or two on my last loop because everyone was gassed at that point.

The tough one was the down hill one. It is not long but I can see where a real strong rider can get bent if a person is jamming on the breaks. Parts of the whole bike are an adventure in my opinion. Ride up hill against traffic with a street cone between you and a logging truck. I call that motivation to get up the hill a little faster. Hope that helps a little bit.

Actually, I think the bridge headed out is a no passing zone as well.  It's pretty narrow in a couple spots, and I think the West end is no pass until you get off the bridge and back onto the hwy.

I remember the bridge and ramp the last down hill being the only two of any length, and the last downhill, was basically ignored, what happens is your close to 45-50 mph going down that hill, and I thought it was safer to just scream on your left then ride my brakes. The 90 lbs chicks got me on the uphill and then rode there brakes on the down hill and my 185lbs went screaming by on the downhill, that was the only time I was scared on the bike those  last hill downhill. I only ignored this after I was passed several times it is a sketchy part of the course. I doubt anyone can even pick up your number on those downhills.

I'm in. I signed up the first day it open.

This will be my second IM, first was this year May 19th IMTX.

Interesting topic about the water temperature. I did Escape from Alcatraz two years ago and every one was freaking out about the water temps. It was 50 the day we swam. I wore a full length wet suit and neoprene cap. After about 5 minutes you don't even feel the cold. How cold is the Lake in C d'Alene?

I'm looking forward to the swim in CdA as the IMTX swim sucks. You start on in warm warm warm duck and goose poop laden lake, not wet suit legal. It is a narrow body of water, no room to swim at all. Than you finish going down a shallow gross canal with concrete on both sides with less room to swim.

Bring on the cold wide lake in CdA!!

It will likely be somewhere in the 50's, For the 2011 , the water temperature was at 55 degrees.

I officially started training Monday...........First few weeks will be alittle boring, but I have been running twoce a week 9 miles and biking twice a week on the trainer for 1 hour.  I have still avoided the pool like the lague, but I'll have to get in soon.  I'm hoping the new purchase of fins and paddles will motivate me to improve my stroke.

After meeting with my coach we decided on 14 hours as a goal.  29 weeks doesn't feel like that long to me anyone else getting a little excited as 2013 gets near?

On another note anyone try the Desoto tri bibs?  I liked the shorts for my HM, but I think the bib might be more comfortable for the full.  Any feedback would be great before I blow the $160.  Have fun training everyone.  I'll shut up and get back to lurking.....

I'm on week #2 of Fink's 30-week plan.  Feels good to be back into a structured routine - I feel kind of lost and aimless when I don't have a plan to follow.

200 days to go!!!

I'm on week 8 of trifuel's 36 week program. Got sick this week so missed a couple of workouts.  I think I factored in an extra week though of training when I started so I could deal with sick days and days where family duties or holidays called.  I did that last year with an extra week in training and somehow it all worked out.

I think I max around 19 hours in a week.

I'm fairly undisciplined so I needed to hire a coach to yell at me and deal with the workouts.  Since I bonked so bad in my last 70.3 I needed to change things up a bit and the coach should help with that.

I wish I could afford a coach to help me out. My biggest problem is not eating well. The workouts are the easy part to keep dedicated with as long as I have a program to follow

I do not own a pair of the Desoto tri bibs, although I love all of my other Desoto products.  My concern would be the inconvenience of bibs when nature calls.  Also, for longer distances on the bike I prefer the float pad that comes in the Forza Riviera.  If you are a size small swimoutlet has them for $70.

My coah is only $50 a month.  She send me my workouts and doubles as a swim coach.  We meet when needed and otheriwse corispond via e-mail.

I just wondered about the bibs since I have the riviera shorts and I like them, but they always seem to feel like they are falling off my .

On a side note first time in the pool today since August.  Wow my eyes burn.  My shoulders will hurt Tuesday.  Have a great weeke everyone.

I've started my 18 month buildup to IMCDA 2014.... Wink

I'm hoping to do some volunteering for all of you in 13', so I'll see you on the course.

My brother (Flyboy), is my inspiration, personal guide and mentor for CdA as I began building for my first IM.

Hope you don't mind if I sneak in here once in a while to see how things are going!
