Member 347 Scottsdale, AZ | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Originally posted by Dino019 Originally posted by cstoulil I've been sitting on the couch the last 5 days, well training wise anyway, had surgery on Monday, and I think I'll get back at in tomorrow (well today) and Sat. I've been moving and unpacking/organizing all week. I've only managed to squeeze in a 1hr bike ride. My legs were trashed. I wanted to get a 1hr run and also swim today. The run did not happen this morning.....legs are still mush. Hoping to get the swim done while the kids nap this afternoon. Tomorrow I'm back at work. So that means 2.5hrs on the trainer. Then I'll run on the treadmill before I leave work on Sunday morning. And I've got Boulder 70.3 in three weeks!! Everything was going pretty good up until we moved. I should be able to get back on track next week and put the hammer down until November 17th Wow, that's a lot to deal with before a 70.3! That said, I'm sure you'll do fine. Have you done Boulder before? Me and a couple friends are trying to decide which 70.3 to do next year and Vineman and Boulder are on our short list. As for me, this week as been the best week of training in a long time. Finally put forth a concentrated effort on knocking out all my workouts which is challenging. I just have to remember that I'm not the only person training for an Ironman while traveling for work. Literally have to tell myself to shut up and train... It doesn't help that the weather has been atrocious here in AZ. This week has been better but it's still tough to get much done outdoors. I'm heading up to Pinetop this weekend where the high is in the mid-70's. Doing a 3 hour bike ride tomorrow and a 10 mile run on Sunday. It's great to get the work in but staying in these HR zones is killing me! Literally feels like I'm trudging along in mud. Edited by devilfan02 2013-07-12 2:27 PM |

Veteran 416 Denver | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Devilfan, this is the first time in 4yrs that I've actually followed a plan (Fink, Be Iron Fit, 30wk plan). The plan has me putting in more training time than I've ever done, and it's paying off......even with staying in zone 2 for most of the training. I PR'd the an Olympic distance race by 8 min, 3wks ago.....and that was with a crappy start to the my run. Prior to the move this past week, if I had to sacrifice a workout it was the swim workout/s. I am okay with that. I'll just have an average swim for the 70.3, instead of improving my previous time. But I'm okay with that considering how crazy the last 4wks have been. I just keep telling myself that al will be back to normal in the next week or so. I did the Boulder 70.3 in 2011. So I know what to expect.....brutal run. Well brutal by Colorado standards. mid-upper 90s for the run, with no shade!!. But next year the are moving the 70.3 to the beginning of June, because the full Ironman will be the first Sunday in August now. So the 70.3 should have very nice weather. |

Good to know as I didn't realize they are moving the date. That could be a good "early season" race for us folks on the west coast. Everyone says HR training is the way to go so I'm trying to stay patient. I'm used to training till exhaustion so it's definitely different getting done with a workout and being fresh. It just drives me crazy on the long runs/rides! |

How's everyone's training going? I've been doing a vast majority of my runs/rides indoors on the trainer/treadmill. I head outside on the weekends for my long ride and run. I just know that I'll burn out if I train outdoors in the AZ heat. |

I head outside on the weekends for my long ride and run. I just know that I'll burn out if I train outdoors in the AZ heat. Thankfully most of my training has been outside. We started looking at airline prices right now, not happy. 99.9% of my runs have been on the treadmill. It's easier on my legs/joints. Runs outside have been fine.....I've done a 7k, 5mile, and two 10k runs. Most of my biking in April and May was done on the trainer. Trainer rides, combined with more time on the bike, have made my biking quite a bit stronger this year. I set a new PR in the 10k run & Olympic distance tri so far this year. The 7k and 5 mile were new races, but still on par with my improved PR running averages. All in all, I'm pretty happy with my training so far. Real test #1 is coming up on August 4th at Ironman Boulder 70.3. I booked my wife's airline ticket back in February. $245, round trip, on United. That's unheard of for United Airlines, so I jumped on it. Southwest and Frontier did not have their schedules released that far in advance 5 months ago, and I didn't want to take a chance. Extreme Veteran 845 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I booked our airline tickets last month and they were not pretty. I was hoping booking them that far out in advance would help but it didn't. Now, all I need to book is a rental car and that too will not be pretty. I am re-thinking about having to travel long distance to races as the cost just isn't worth it. Now if it is to go to Kona I won't care how much I spend to get there. |

I checked ticket prices out of Omaha to Phoenix and they were running at about $260 round trip non stop. Me and a buddy are going to drive but according to our wives "We are Frickn Nuts" and "There is no way in He (doble hockey sticks) we are driving". Might be time to book those flights.
Now to a more serious topic (for the people dealing with heat now but we know come October it will be cold).... I have a nice bronze tan going on but I'm concerned by the time IMAZ gets rolling, I will be back to my pasty white normal winter self. I plan to lube up with sunscreen, but does anyone try to maintain thier summer glow for these events? You know, fake bake? As a guy that already shaves my legs and fully accepts the ridicule from my golfing buddies, adding in tanning might just be enought to push my wife over the edge. Just thinking out loud and freaking out that today marks 122 days of planning remaining. Carry on. |

Left about 7pm Sunday night, got there about 5 Monday afternoon. It wasn't too bad, I'd suggest the less scenic route through NE/KS/catching the corners of OK/TX and through NM. On the way back took the fam to the grand canyon and through CO. That was what I will call IM#2 lol. That was nonstop as well, alternating between the wife and myself. As for the tan, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Yeah get the free rub down coming out of T1&2 but it's not going to bake you, it's less of a direct heat I think. |

Us Sioux City folks just don't have much for flight options with out traveling 90 miles anymore. THanks and maybe we will see you at IMAZ!

Do people agree that by now we should be able to do an HIM comfortably? My longest run to date has only been 7.5 miles, bike has been 53.5 miles, and swim has been 1.2 miles OWS at 38 mins. Doing Fink's Be Iron Fit 'competitive' plan, currently in week 13. I'm sure I could do an HIM, but comfortably? I duno... EDIT: corrected my OWS distance. ---Introduction--- Name : Lisa This is my first Ironman, went for a slim chance at online registration and when I got in, I GOT IN! (past race experience: 3 sprints, 1 slightly longer than a sprint, 1 sprint DNF) I chose IMAZ because it is within driving distance of Los Angeles. My IMAZ goal is to FINISH without feeling completely wiped out. I have a personal time goal that I will assess after I do my mock HIM in mid-August. I'm looking forward to accomplishing something that requires this much dedication! Edited by Letmi 2013-07-19 5:11 PM |

Veteran 820 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Well 2 hour ride today put on hold. I have 3 kids, three and under and if I don't make it out of the house before they do I don't get to go. Two of them up at 0615, wife is still sleeping though of course. That's the tough thing about training for an IM with kids. If I don't get my workouts done before I come home or they wake up on weekends, it probably won't happen. I'm always the first one up, last one to bed, and only one not to get a nap. In other news my pool is closed until aug 18th. It was 200 td's from my desk, now I have to go 2 miles, no more slipping out of the office. |

I've got a 70.3 in two weeks. I'm also doing the Fink plan, but the intermediate plan. That will put me at week 15 of the plan. I'm using he 70.3 to get my nutrition nailed down for AZ. I rode the new Boulder 70.3 bike course this past Saturday. Took it pretty easy and averaged 3.5-4.0mph less than I do in a "race." I got off the bike and the legs still felt "fresh." BUT, 2 weeks from now will be 10-15 degrees hotter......first weekend in August is always hot in Denver/Boulder!! |

I did a HIM earlier in the year and everything was comfortable until about mile 4 on the run when my legs decided they wanted to cramp up. Not sure if I woudl ever call a HIM comfortable though. I did a modified Oly on Saturday and had a strong race from start to finish. Now it's time to gear up for Age Group Nationals, the Hy Vee, then OMFG IMAZ.

Monsoon season is in full effect here in AZ. Had some crazy storms last weekend which caused damage and flooding. Also means morning training sessions are extremely sweaty due to the rise in humidity. |

They're SUPPOSEDLY going to change it to a two loop course - the Curry hill stretch will remain but they will extend the run out to McClintock Dr. I would be fine with one less loop and the run out to McClintock should be flat. These are the only details I know so I won't be of much help answering any questions. |
