Kido - 2012-12-03 7:05 PM Isn't it:  "Bob Costas is AN idiot?"

Yes but we've beat that horse enough...

I had to get my lick in and I'm not reading over a previous 6 pages/120 posts to see if it's been talked about before.

I am an anti-gun kind of guy. I do not want a gun ban, but strongly feel we need more constraints on who can purchase  a gun, and what guns can be purchase. i do think that it is too easy to get a gun. And it drives me crazy when the NRA opposes new common-sense restrictions.

You know what else drives me crazy? When people try to introduce anti-gun rants in situations that where caused by other factors. As stated, this is a case of extreme domestic violence. And the guy had no recorded criminal or mental illness past. A gun, a knife, a screwdriver, or his own hands would have suffice to drive this sad event to the same conclusion.

The use of gun control rants in this situation diminishes the believability of gun control discussions for those cases in which gun access is a real part of the problem. Same as claiming racial discrimination, or claiming sexual abuse, when it did not happen. When everybody is screaming "racial discrimination", "rape", "gun control", "profiling" left and right without taking into account all the facts, especially people with high profile media jobs, the "here we go again" syndrome by the general population can make actual cases of these events less credible.

And the opportunity to address domestic violence in general, and in the NFL in particular, gets loss in all the screaming.

I agree with this statement.  I have nearly a dozen guns of various calibers and types, some of which have been in my family for nearly 80 years.  They are used for recreational shooting and are kept locked in a gun safe.  I enjoy having guns and feel they give me and my wife comfort knowing we could protect ourselves and our children should an intruder disrupt our lives.  While I enjoy using my weapons for fun, I too believe that there should be heavy restrictions on who can purchase them and what weapons should be legal to sale.  Because of my military background, I have had the chance to shoot just about every type of weapon you can imagine.  This includes a 50 caliber, M249, 240B, M203, Mk19 and a host of other weapon systems.  Do to this, I have had intense training to learn about these systems and how they should be used.  When I bought my last 9mm, I walked out of the store with it within an hour.

My point is that we should regulate the gun industry like every other industry in America.  What I don't agree with is that we should go on a witch hunt and punish those that possess arms for recreation or protection.  After all, look at the guy in WY who just killed his dad at the Community College.  He shot him with a bow and arrow and then stabbed him after he had stabbed his father's wife as well.  Domestic violence knows no weapon, and education may be our best defense.  I guess what really concerns me the most is that the world seems to be increasingly violent.

Two things struck me about your post.

1.  I, too, keep my guns in a safe because there are so many children in and out of our home.  In the case of an intruder they are pretty much useless to me...so I keep a baseball bat next to my bed.

2.  The gun industry is one of the most regulated industries in the country.

As a side note......statistics show that you are living in a time of relative safety....our society is NOT becoming increasingly violent.  That's a myth.  It is actually becoming less violent if you look at the Uniform Crime Reports from the last few decades.

I think you are half right...  I think it's a pessimistic and doomsayer opinion that people want to take away rights.  What's their motivation?  I don't see it.

The media and politicians want you to think the world is increasingly violent because it's violence and crime that get our attention.  We like to look at it.  The news/media want advertising dollars and to get them, they need ratings.  What get's ratings?  Crime/sex/violence.  So that's the drug they push.

Politicians want something to hang their hat on.  A problem to fix (even if it's not there).  Because they want re-election, bigger paychecks, support from special interest groups.

I just can't buy the statements and conspiracy theory that media and politicians wake up in the morning trying to scheme up ways to take away our rights.  There is nothing in that for them.  What they WANT, is create a demand to sell something.  And that "something" is a sense of security they say is needed.  It's greed that drives most people, not some desire to oppress or take away rights.

I agree that the media is more about ratings.  Summer of the Shark back in 2001 is an example that comes to mind.

Politicians on the other hand have a lot to gain by scaring us.  Both parties do it, the Republicans scare the churches into believing that if they vote for Democrats they'll push religion out of the public square and vis versa the Dems scare Seculars into thinking voting for a Republican will bring prayer towers into every city (exaggerating, but you get the idea).

The media doesn't necessarily want you to believe that we're more violent, it's just that it is what sells, and that is what they exist for, it is how they make their money.  "If it bleeds, it leads".   They could run a ton of other stories, but they'd be tuned out in a heartbeat for the media outlets that still show the blood and violence.

As for the government....  ugh, I won't even go there.

Guess I need to get rid of my Benelli Super Black Eagle that I use for hunting and my glock 9mm for home protection.....since they're "bad".

Glad I have a single shot .410. That'll show 'em!

My bet is that Mr. Costas probably doesn't know the difference between a semi-auto weapon and any other.  He would probably be shocked at what a "semi-auto" weapon is from the AR-15 to the 5 round box mag hunting rifles.

My guess is he is just parrotting typicla uber-liberal gun control rhetoric without even understanding what he's talking about.

Or....he does know the difference and he's just a radical.

Again, I wonder if he would be OK with someone saying: "Hey I'm ok with the right of free speech, but I draw the line on political bloggers or self publishing"

Just another ridiculously weak argument from someone who saw something on the internet.

Sure, the SEALs killed Bin Laden, but without guns, it would've been WAY more difficult and, dare I say, downright impossible?

It would have been difficult for OBL to kill thousands of Americans if it wasn't for airplanes, box cutters, and small plane training.....so....do we ban those as well.

The fact of the matter is that a libtard named Costas took it upon himself to take a stance against the Constituion.....a Constitution that my father and countless other Vets (including you and your family) protected.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions....which is afforded by the same constitution. But don't use one amendment to take a dump on another.

mr2tony - 2012-12-05 9:23 AM Just another ridiculously weak argument from someone who saw something on the internet.

Didn't Tony's grandparents fight against the constitution?  Surprised  Just sayin...

Both sides.

Again, another ridiculous argument lacking any sort of reason. Airplanes aren't made to fly into buildings. They're made to transport people. Guns, in fact, are made to fire a projectile at several hundred meters per second to put a hole in something.

Second: Costas isn't taking a stand against the Constitution. He's expressing his views, in fact expressing his rights under the Constitution.

Finally, this is hypocritical. You say ... ``But don't use one amendment to take a dump on another.'' thereby advocating abridgment of free speech. You're basically saying `Don't talk bad about guns!' I can talk bad about anything I want. In case you forget, that's another right paid for in blood.

Are you really so threatened by Bob Costas? I really don't get why the gun rights people get SO ANGRY about one idiot expressing his opinion. You can relax. Nobody is going to take away your hand cannon.
