Any protein shake drink mixes do you recommend? I'm not looking to bulk up, just to really tone my muscles and lose the fat. I don't eat enough protein on a daily basis to make up for it, so protein drinks is better in my case. There's so many out there....the choices is overwhelming. Also - should I drink the protein shake after every workout OR every Strength Training workout? I do a lot of 2 hour bike rides, and never take in any sort of recovery drink, only for hard and long rides. However, I was told that a protein shake is better after strength training as it will also aid in recovery and reduce the soreness. I would like to do a little more cross training and strength training for this month to see how much better/stronger I feel for San Diego Century. I have gone back and forth between Muscle Milk and just plain chocolate milk. I have also used the Shakology meal replacement shakes from Beach Body, but these are kind of pricy. I have not tried any of the recovery drinks from the sports drink folks. Are you looking to supplement your regular meals or replace a meal? Personally, if it was just for recovery the chocolate milk plan works pretty good unless you are lactate intolerant or avoid dairy products for some other reason.
I like to use a half glass of chocolate milk for everything under 2 hours when I'm not on the dieting phase too! It's really pretty similar to the drinks and a lot cheaper. I'll use the hammer or First Endurance for longer stuff because it contains other amino acids and things to help keep the soreness down and get you ready for another day. |

Regular 89 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN I would like to sign up for another round. I'm not HIM (yet....hopefully), but still plugging away. I am 32 and this will be my third summer of triathlons. I'm still relegated to sprints at this point due to a poor swim, but I finally broke down and got some 1-1 swimming lessons this year. My second lesson is tomorrow night so too early to tell, but I feel like I'm making progress. Fitness wise, I think I could get ready for the bike and run of a HIM, so we'll see where the swim takes me. Mentioning fitness. In my 20s, I always said I would eat what I want to eat and if I started to gain weight, I would start running. I started gaining weight when I hit 30. Nothing terrible, but probably 20 lbs over where I finished high school (I was really skinny in high school). I started with small runs and added triathlon initially because I didn't like doing really long runs. I lost about 10 of those pounds and probably could stand to lose a few more, but my BMI is normal now. It's funny, at any point during this, I think, this is the best shape I've been in since high school and that what I thought was good last year was really crap. I just ran my 2nd 1/2 marathon and took 13 minutes off my time from the first one. Today, I'm signing up for my first full that will take place in December.
Family - I am married with one child, Will who is 17 months. He takes away a lot of my training time, but it's all completely worth it. He doesn't like the jogging stroller because he doesn't like the sun in his eyes - we need to get a solution to that. My wife is a runner as well, and I'm trying to get her to do a triathlon with me.
Training and 2013 races. I'm getting ready for a sprint in 2 weeks. We'll see how far my swim progresses to decide what I will do for the rest of the summer.
Looking forward to seeing you guys do some great things. |

Thats a good idea about having the packages partially opened. I remember struggling with that at times last year! |

Personally, if it was just for recovery the chocolate milk plan works pretty good unless you are lactate intolerant or avoid dairy products for some other reason. I'm just looking to supplement after a workout, especially strength training. I would like to have the best benefit because often times after I finish strength training, I feel like I could have gone more. But I know my limits. Doing 150lbs leg press is enough..:D No meal replacements. The gym I go to do make smoothies with 25g of Whey Protein. I figure that I can use that as my recovery drink for strength training ONLY, and chocolate milk for everything else. I would be very disappointed if I was lactose intolerant! I love my dairy!! I was just curious if it matters what brand of Protein works best to help repair muscles, reduce next-day soreness, and help keep it building. I guess it doesn't matter. |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN I use the Ironman Perform & don't mind it (I've had issues w/others). I agree, try it out 1st. So far I'm up to 3 hr rides & I'll take a bottle of Perform & one of plain water. When mixing, I'll put the 2 scoops in with about a cup of water, put the lid on & shake it really hard, then I'll add the rest of the water. The big container was relative cheap, but a little hard to find. Ordered it online, & it was back ordered, get tired of waiting, so I tracked it down locally at the one store that had it. For my HIM, I used a speedfil (the one that mounts on the frame, not the aerobars). I went with it for 3 reasons. First, I wanted something with a straw. I really slow down when grabbing a drink, so I tend not to drink enough. The straw also has a wire so you can put it right where you want it. Second, like Ken, I was worried about it being too heavy up front (so many people do it though, so it must not be too bad). Finally, I couldn't get any of the setups that fit between your aerobars to fit anyway! I'm short 5'2", so there's not a lot of length on my aerobars past the stem. I'm still trying to figure out if this setup will work for IMWI, as it only allows for one type of drink. For the HIM, I started w/Perform & refilled with water at the aid stations, but then took more solid calories toward the end as I did. Jamie, if your HIM is going to be hot & hilly (like mine was last year), I'd test out different things. The hotter it is the less I tolerate sweet things especially if they are warm. Try to take a little in on a consistent basis. The Perform at the aid stations should be cold-ish, at least for a while, so it might be more tolerable! |

Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN trei - 2013-05-07 11:48 AM Jaime, For my first (and only to this point) HIM last year (Racine 70.3) I grabbed the water or energy drink bottle as I rode by. I was very nervous about this before hand and it turned out to be pretty much a non factor. I know this can be hard to believe at this point though. What you want to do as you come to an aid station is slow down some, point or make good eye contact with a volunteer, and say "water or perform - or whatever the drink you want is and hold out your hand. Many of the volunteers will somewhat run backward to make the hand off. I just placed those water bottles in my cages, but you will probably want to dump the water into your aero water bottle. Now for a related question: How did the "perform" sports drink work for those that have done HIM or IM. The only time I used it was for the above mentioned HIM, but I was thinking of getting some now to train with so I can get used to it prior this time. I did pretty well nutrition wise at the HIM, but did feel a bit bloated toward the end. The majority of what I drank that day was water though. Otherwise, as has been stated previously by other in the group I really like the Hammer products (perpetuem and endurolytes fizz) and the vega electrolyte hydrator, but would love to "live off the course" if I can. Todd [/QUOTE/] I was wondering about the bike aid stations as well (for an Ironman branded event) - what type of water/perform bottles are they - are they like bike bottles or like the water bottles u buy at the convenient store with the twist off cap? Do you exchange the bottles at the aid stations or refill from a jug? Sorry for the silly questions - just trying to wrap my brain around it for Fl. I have been training with the lemon lime Perform and I actually really like it - better tasting than HEED or plain gatorade. AND I can still drink it luke warm! |

Yes, I am still trying to deal with shipping issues - I promise I will stop talking about it soon!!!! My current dilemma is do I take my fancy hard sided bike box from AK to FL on the plane and then break it down and ship it by itself USPS and then put the bike in a cardboard bike box and send it USPS back to AK. OR. do I send my bike both ways in a cardboard bike box (down on the plane and back up by USPS). I found the USPS is only a little over $100 to ship (vs. $700 UPS) so for $200 I can have the security that my bike will be in one piece for at least the way down - I worry that if it gets damaged I won't be able to race. I am leaning toward taking my bike box as it sure would be nice not to have it ready to ride right out of the box. For those traveling with bike boxes - make sure you check they will take it - it turns out that some small regional jets (like United Airways) will not take bikes. Since those are the only ones flying out of the airport I am using - I kind of got screwed! |

My bike shop hooked me up. They are well protected, and I also bought some bubble wrap for the frame for a little peace of mind. The down side is that the bike is disassembled quite a bit more, but you don't need to worry about damage except in extreme cases as the boxes are solid and the bikes are well protected. |

Same here. I usually stuff gels in my bike shoe. So when I get to T1 I take them and put them in my pocket before putting on my shoes. Then use 1 bottle water and 1 bottle electrolyte mix. Anything else I take in I get from volunteers. It's relatively easy to grab a bottle of perform and drink half and throw the rest away. There are plenty of aid stations to do that. If it's not extra hot I won't even need to. The 2 bottles should do it. |

I will make it up later in the week. Weather in my area is not great, but I have another long run planned for today. Will probably end up with 12 or so miles. Going to experiment with nutrition again. Will most likely just carry a bottle with water and take my nutrition via GU gel and spread that during the run (this based on a recommendation from our group last week).. Interesting that these days I get excited about a 12 mile run considering two years ago I could not stand to run more than 3 miles. |

Champion 7136 Knoxville area | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN Name: Leegoocrap/Chris Story: I've been training for tri's for 5 years now, and have been a pretty serious triathlete for the past three. Last season was full of up and down moments and lots of stress, so for 2013 I've decided to re-focus myself on my weak spots (that is, running) while at the same time re-learning to enjoy the races without the expectations I put on myself. I plan to make my return to full IM racing in 2014, so that's something that is in the back of my mind as well. Outside the tri life I'm a big dork (or so I'm told) who loves reading, anime, long walks on the beach and the occasional bar crawl. Family Status: On and off bachelor
Current Training: I am coached by Newbz from the forums and have been for the past couple of years. We've worked pretty hard on my abilities overall, and now we're focusing on turning me into a runner with a good bike as opposed to a roadie with a crappy run Within the next couple of months I will be ramping my volume to start the IM push. Last Years Races: I had an up and down 2012. I spent a lot of the year preparing to go for a 4:30ish finish at IM Augusta, but had a fairly disappointing result... as such I ended up re-evaluating myself and my goals. 2013 Races: I'm still not specifically signed up for anything this year (although I've already had a couple of races) but I imagine some number of sprints / oly's and most likely a longer race (either a marathon or another 70.3) will fill out the rest of the season. My primary goal this year is to prepare for a KQ time at IMLou next (2014) year. A tall order to fill, no doubt. Weight Loss: Not for me... I hover in the mid 150's most of the year, I suspect when my volume starts hitting bigger numbers I'll end up in the high 140's. What will make me a good mentee: I'm fairly knowledgeable (enough to be dangerous) in certain area's... I'm a loudmouth, and I'm generally helpful... I think |

Hope it was something minor. {{hugs}} So far pretty good! I took it slightly easier at Strength training yesterday, and no post workout soreness, so I'm thrilled about that because I can add some more cycling focused workouts, and start doing them 3x a week. My hamstrings are SO weak, so I'm hoping over time with getting stronger hammies, I can pull up better and not be such a masher on the bike. On the plus side, I decided to RUN to and from the gym - 2.12 miles, and I felt awesome! I laugh now because last year and two years ago, I could barely do a mile without stopping, now? No problems. I want to be much more comfortable in doing little runs (no timing things or any intervals), and increase the mileages because I have "almost" convinced a friend to do a Half-marathon in the fall. She just started working out and is reaping in the rewards. She started to feel like some of her motivation is waning, and I told her that if she really likes to run, she can do a half-marathon. She looked at me like I was crazy. I told her - actually, it's fairly easy to do, and I think it's a fantastic goal, and she has from now all the way until Fall to increase her mileage. Time/speed does NOT matter. She gets impressed when I told her that I do Triathlons, 100 mile rides, and half marathons, and thought that it's extremely hard. I just simply said, "Well, to YOU it may seem hard, but to me, it's actually easy. Get rid of 'oh its too hard' mentality." Besides, after you finish the half-mary, you receive your medal and show off to everyone...THEY will be impressed. They won't care that you tripped, they won't care that you messed up on nutrition, they don't care if you're slow. YOU FINISHED a Half-marathon...that's all they're impressed about. " She started to ponder a bit, and realized that I'm right. :D There's no need to be super competitive for first year/second year runner. I think that's what drives me nuts is many people who finds out that I have done two half-marys, triathlons and lots of long bike rides, and they said "Wow that's really hard. I can't do that." UGH!! YES YOU CAN. :D /rant Looking forward to some rides this week! Today - 2 hr trainer ride (skipped from yesterday) today...maybe. Oh I love being self-coached. LOL! Tmw a night ride, Friday strength training, then a coaching cycling session on Saturday, and Cake Ride on Sunday. |

Veteran 536 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN kenj - 2013-05-08 10:14 AM Had a training failure this morning. 2 miles into a 14 mile planned run I got what started as something similar to a side stich, but it has radiated from the left side of my back and around to the stomach. Still now, several hours later it is very uncomfortable. Not sure if it is GI, or kidney stones. I thought it might be gall stones but that is on the right side from what I understand. It was a long 2 mile walk home. Hopefully it will pass and I can use today as a rest day and switch the run to tomorrow. How is the training going this week for you all? Ken, I hope that clears up soon but if you still are having pain into the afternoon I'd call the doctor and get it checked out. PS - I had an uncomfortable walk back a week ago on a short run - which ended up in me jumping a fence and making a mad dash to a porta potty. It all worked out in the end so to speak and I was able to finish up my run. Hey it happens once in a while......... |

Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN I think I am going to take a rest day today - still a little sore from Saturday's 10k. Plus - feeling a little unmotivated/stressed- is this the dreaded taper feeling? Just don't feel like getting out for a short workout. So today will be a mental health day! |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN I wanted to show off my handlebars. I specifically asked my bike guy to do the Harlequin Bar tape. I love it! *not my car. Edited by CyborgQueen 2013-05-08 11:33 AM |

Member 213 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN Thanks for the input Ali. I have both the speedfil and the between the aerobars bottle. However, neither of them are actually on my bike yet ( a goal before the long ride this weekend). I plan to try both them out individually over the next couple months to see which works best for me. I'm going to pick up some Perform too. Todd |
