Saturday I'm just going for a 6km run and Sunday is my rest day.

Down another 3 pounds this week, 31 in total since Nov.4th!

Good luck Carlo!
I'm going out tonight so tomorrow's training will depend on how much alcohol is consumed... The club ride has been cancelled due to the weather forecast, so if I do something it'll probably be a run on the treadmill, or spin bike at the gym.

Way to go on the weightloss! You are gaining muscle mass too which is denser than fat so your clothes probably aren't fitting too well anymore.

Hey all - my winter maintenance program was going along great, but I hit a little drama 2 weeks ago that put me in a funk. Just ready to get my groove back and did an hour run this morning. Really not digging the Zone 2 runs, since I'm barely over a fast walk before my HR gets to a Zone 3. Fast little heart of mine.

Anyway.... nice to make your acquaintance and I'm hoping this funk has left the building - I've got a swim and ride planned for tomorrow.

Hey SmallTriGirl, nice to meet you.  Introduce yourself a little if you don't mind, it helps to be able to put a story to a name.

Couple thoughts:

  • Drinking Kona blend coffee this morning; closest I'm ever going to get to Kona
  • Yesterday at lunch we went to the zoo and had lunch there.  Knowing I was going to run 6.6 later probably shouldn't have had chicken tenders and fries.  But I really shouldn't have had the rest of my kid's chicken tenders.  And I really really shouldn't have had the corn dog.  Paid for it during the run.  I continually re-learn this lesson: don't eat now what you're not willing to be digesting while you work out later in the day.  The worst offender for me is bacon, I absolutely cannot eat bacon if I plan on working out that day, I won't make it through the workout.

Sorry man I can't be much help, I've never done a marathon, furthest I've ever run at one time is 14 miles.  I've always liked Mike's rule of thumb of one recovery day for every hour of race.  But regarding workouts to do in the meantime, you can't go wrong with swimming.  Don't do a bunch of kick sets, obviously, but just the standard kick movement will keep your joints and muscles loose.  Always helps me.  I hear aqua jogging is really good too, if your pool has the equipment for it.

I'll defer to Mike and Joe on this one. Not much to add, seeing as my longest run is under 7 miles. I would ice the heck out of your legs, as Mike mentioned. I'd do some stretching and get a massage at the very least. That's my advice, for what it's worth.

Ice, compression, massage and a really easy spin on the trainer just to keep the blood flowing. I wouldn't run for a week. Swimming works too, just stay away from the kick sets.

Way to go Carlo. You weren't last. There were over 200 behind you in your age group alone and you toughed out some hard miles. You showed perseverance and determination. It may not have been as good as you had hoped but you'll learn from this experience and do better next time.

I'm far from a runner but I'd say keep moving like Joe, Gary and Mike said but I'd also suggest getting into the hot tub at your pool and directing the jets over your sore muscles. It should help to loosen you up a bit. Be patient with your body. If you rush to get back to training you'll find your workouts are only getting mediocre results.

Congrats on a hard won finish.

Congratulations Carlo! It's always a big deal running a marathon, bet you going up stairs is not fun at the moment lol (someone told me to go up backwards, if that makes sense, but it never worked for me...)
After the marathons I ran I took a good three days of doing nothing, then went for a 3 mile very slow jog and done other machines at the gym during the first week, then done my last taper week in reverse and felt great by the third week, but I guess you have to see how you feel, just take it easy.
(I have never ran a marathon after I started doing triathlons but I would guess now I would probably swim lots for recovery if I did)

Hi All.

How're you feeling Carlo? Recuperating well I hope.

We had a phenomenal weather day today. On Saturday all our snow - the little we had - melted away and today we got up to 15+degC/60degF!! and sunny. So, I went for my regularly scheduled swim and I had a really good swim day. I finished up feeling like I could've kept going.

Then later, because it was so warm, I went for an outdoor run with a training buddy and we ran an 8K loop - I was in my shorts! in January - unheard of! I have to say I felt really good and I'm pretty certain that this was my fastest non-race run I've ever had. I was glad to reach our planned finish but I can say I actually felt like a runner.

Before my run I was waffling - reluctant to do it, but it was just too nice to not get outside and enjoy the day so I went and in the end I was really glad I did because it felt great.

How's everyone else doing?

My Garmin wasn't charged today and I had to run with no technological feedback!! My legs almost didn't work at the start but it was brilliant! Everywhere was frosty, beautiful views, just really enjoyed the run. (even stopped for pics )

Nice weather! We're in the 70s, but are going to dip down into the lower 40's by Thursday night and stay cooler through the weekend. Very nice running weather. Excited.

I'm almost fully recovered from a lower ab strain from 2 weeks ago. I've done no swimming or strength, and I'm not quite yet there with buying a bike. It's been run-run-run. I'm on a special 8 week intensive running plan to see if I can make some gains in my 5k time. Focused on Sprints this upcomign season and am really motivated to get quicker on the run. Doing the 100 mile January challenge and am doing great. May have to add some extra miles at the end to top it off, but I think I'll meet my goal.

Nice pics!

Carlo - congrats on a hard-fought finish!

Been having a rough time here. My eldest got a weird knee pain/swelling that ended up being a virus irritating his knee. (Who knew?) They were afraid it was septic, though, so we spent Fri in the ER. After carrying him around all day, my lower back is super sore. I was careful - but how do you put a 38 lb. kid who can't walk in a car seat without bending over??? So I think I'm going to have to rest for a while. Feeling better today, being very careful.

Then yesterday, a runner in our small town was hit and killed by a drunk driver - at 8 am!! I didn't know her, but she was a Boston marathoner, mom of 3, and wife to a police officer who has worked tirelessly against drunk drivers. Very sad. There is a memorial run Saturday. I hope to participate, even if it's short and slow. https://www.facebook.com/events/489458451159627/?notif_t=plan_edited

Be safe out there, everyone.

-Rebecca

Hi All, had a pretty hard cycling session this evening with a 20 min TT. I didn't know I could sweat so much. I'll sleep good tonight but I may be a bit fried for swimming tomorrow (and running again in the afternoon).

Tay - nice pics! Neat to see you and where you run. After Joe's and your pics I want to go and take a few to post as well.

Gary - Hope your ab-strain heals quickly - but don't rush it. I had a look at your log because you said you're focusing on your run to achieve a pace goal and you don't look like you're too far off. I think you'll really like Oly races once you make the leap. I always feel let down by Sprints because they're over so quick - still fun though.

Rebecca - hope your son is recovering well. And how does your back feel (achey/tight or sharp pains)?

Great pictures!  I don't have the money for a gps watch, so I always try to plan my route in advance so I know how far I'm going, particularly since I'm aiming for a specific weekly mileage, following the infamous barry p approach.  Also I more or less decided to ditch the heart rate monitor this year.  So I'm still timing myself and listening to music but considerably less tech free than I could be or used to be.  I like it.  I think the hrm is a great tool but I enjoy the running and cycling more now than I did when I was chained to that thing.

Anyways, that looks like an awesome trail, beautiful place for a run!

Sorry to hear things aren't going well.  I hope your son and back are both recovering.  Also sorry to hear about the local runner, I know things like that can really shake one up particularly when they are local, even if you didn't know the person.  Memorial run is a good idea.  Any news on what is happening to the drunk driver?

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
