Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Can I please ask to "cheat" slightly on the challenge? As I already said, I can't do a lot of running because of carrying a small person (who is getting bigger by the day), so I'm working in things like walking parkrun to keep myself moving. If you guys don't mind I'm going to include those as "runs" for the challenge as I have put them in as run substitutes for the moment. Given the choice I would be running - I never thought I'd actually say I miss running! - but right now I have to work with what I've got. I'll add my totals in tomorrow as I'm currently on my phone, but i did parkrun Saturday morning and the tri club swim session in the afternoon. Sunday was a lazy day. This morning was the track session - my one opportunity in the week to actually run :-) Gabe - great to see you again. I can't believe you're doing challenge Roth. That's one of my bucket list races. I have a friend who accidentally got a place recently, so I'm looking forward to hearing all about it from both of you. Troy - I'm going to agree that one swim a week will get you through the race, although if it's an open water swim you will definitely need some practice in a similar environment before hand. If you can find some people to practice swimming in a pack that'll be invaluable. I did my first 2 tris on a total of about 5 training swims. While I would never recommend that approach, I agree that as long as you are confident you can finish the distance you are better off using your time elsewhere. And I've never done 3 swims a week, even for ironman. I have limited training time and as the swim is the shortest leg it gets the least training time. You need to work on your weaknesses, and also figure out where you can get the most "bang for your buck" in terms of training time. But make sure you don't completely neglect any aspect. Dennis - your calf injury sounds like an overtraining injury, especially from looking at your graph. It looks like your run went from virtually nothing one month to peak training the next. In addition to ensuring you don't increase your distance for a single run by more than 10% you should also not increase your total weekly volume by more than about 10%. From that graph it looks like you increased both distance and frequency, whereas you should try to increase one at a time. When I first started running I was very prone to calf problems. Building up slowly and doing lots and lots of calf stretches really helped. |

Master 1841 Sendai, Japan | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Dennis: there are a two people at my pool that seem to experience a calf cramp almost every time they swim. One of them kicks like she's running and the other has his toes pointed and ankle locked. You want the ankle loose and relaxed (or so my instructor tells me....I don't mean to imply that I do it right, but I never cramp). If you want to take the swim out of the picture, try doing all your swimming with a pull buoy for a week or two. Another thing you may want to try if you have access to an elliptical is using that in place of 1 or 2 of your runs. It is a easier on the calves and you can get a pretty good workout that is similar to running. Mitch: I agree with what others have said about aero on the trainer. It just is not the same, but try to get in some time on the bars because it will help once you get outside. I am most comfortable on the bars while doing Z2-Z3 work. The more intense the session, the less time I spent down in aero. |

Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED I'm going to agree that you can get the 300M swim done in one per week. I don't recommend it all though. I can only imagine how congested a 300M swim will be in open water. If you are not comfortable with open water and a lot of contact it will be a very tough experience. Of all the disciplines the swim requires the most respect. You will only get comfortable with contact the more you swim ina crowd, but feeling strong and confident in the water will help alleviate a lot of the associated anxiety. Here's my two cents - if you aren't ready for the swim, you owe it to yourself, your family, your competitors and the RD not to participate. Only you know whether you are ready. Raced too many events where the panic of the swim sets in. Knowing that I could and have made the distance before is what kept me going and not pack it in. I've also seen too many athletes get plucked from the water in the midst of a panic and in my first tri swam with a guy in my heat who never made it out the water. I remember the family waiting for the athlete at the finish line. My goal is not to scare you, but to remind you of our responsibility to race safely. |

The swim in all 3 tris I plan on doing is in a "pool" there is a 750m swim in a lake I might consider in late September. I can and I will prove that I can finish a 300m swim with a decent finish in my age group on one swim a week maybe 2 later in spring. I have been swimming all my life, raced motocross for 15 years bar to bar at less than a foot apart at 4th gear pinned speeds jumping over 75ft....a little 300m swim in a pool does NOT intimate me!!! I am not a pro I am an amatuer. ...I'm in this for fun.....to those who gave positive advice I thank you to the negative. ...hold my towel and watch me! If some of us serve to motivate you, great. My advice wasn't meant to be negative. Based on my experience as a life long swimmer who has never been afraid of the water. I've swam in the middle of the Atlantic while in the Navy. Been swimming since I was 4. Merely trying to point out that an open water swim in a triathlon is a very different animal. I still haven't gotten past the anxiety from the physicality of the event. Pool swim is different. Just take the swim seriously, that's all we ask. Most Tri deaths occur in the swim. |

Expert 1255 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED NAME: username: jackiep, First name: Jackie STORY: I am 62 years old and reside in Austin, Texas, although I am currently a consultant in Tallahassee, FL. I started running in my 30s when I worked for the Department of Defense. I ran with SEALS and Rangers (it was their warm-up). Then I took about 15 years off. I started cycling around age 50. My eye doctor told me I should do a triathlon. I didn’t even know what that was. After I read about it, I thought it was worth a try. So at age 57, I did my first one. I lived in the middle of nowhere and the closest pool was 40 miles away. But, I started swimming two to three times a week and took up running again. I joined BT and got in a mentoring group with Ernesto. He’s still in this group somewhere. He showed up in person at my first sprint triathlon and took pictures and cheered. I eventually did an Olympic and a half mary and the following year I did 5 or 6 races including my first HIM. In Feb 2013 while unemployed, I trained for and ran my first marathon trying to determine if I wanted to ever do an IM. I was well trained and qualified for Boston. After the bombs went off and more people qualified, I ended up missing the cutoff by 34 sec. I found myself wondering what I should do next and just didn’t have the desire to set any goals. I did race cyclocross last year. I love getting points for my team. After taking the year off, I decided to get back into triathlons. I hired a coach last July. It's definitely the best thing I've ever done. He writes my training plan based on the goals I set. He adjusts my schedule when it needs it, or when life or work things change. I applied for and got accepted to represent Big Sexy Racing team this year. FAMILY STATUS: Single with two grown daughters and an awesome son-in-law who are my biggest cheerleaders besides this group. My significant other is a very active cyclist and former marathoner and triathlete. It's nice to have someone to go to the pool or ride with even if you do your own separate workout. 2012 RACES: A half mary, 4 sprints, 3 Olympics, a half iron and 2 long registered bike rides. Had a couple of podium finishes and set some more PRs. 2013 RACES: Cowtown Marathon (Ft Worth) PR and BQ. 2014 RACES: 2 sprint tris and a half iron. WEIGHTLOSS: 112 pounds dripping wet. I'm the one who was always to trying to put weight on in high school. WHY I WOULD MAKE A GOOD MENTEE: I am very disciplined. I am open to other ideas. I am a student of the sport. I love to give back. CURRENT GOAL: Re-qualify for Boston at the Albany, GA marathon (Mar 7). Do 4 other duathlon/triathlon events including a HIM or IM. |
