Anyone else have big concrete goals on the map???

I have a few big goals:

1) hit a sub 2hr half mary this year

2) Do that Century without wanting to kill myself (questions re: that below)

3) get BF on my scale down to 25% OR hit 125 lbs. (my parents scale sheds 4% automagically)

4) Do an Oly

5) Double all my distances from '07 (should not be hard - I slacked 9/12 months in '07)

** So, with putting together my plan, I am finding that I will pretty much be doing LSD bikes on Saturdays and runs on Sundays. Is this asking for big trouble?? I don't know how I feel about riding 40 miles one day and then trying to run 13 miles the next....Any advice? What do you normally do, as a triathlete, when you have 2 LSD's in 2 disciplines to do in a week? Since I've never done anything but a sprint and I didn't really train, I never had to deal with this .

Thanks guys!

My personal opinion is that a 40 mile bike ride isn't really that a long ride. It's only 2-3 hours long which I've always found is much easier than a 2-3 hour run. I think that you'll find it easier than you think. You won't really be stressing the legs on the bike, as long as you stay fueled up and don't crank it too hard. You might find that it's going to be a nice recovery from the runs over the week.

I would agree. Don't push the 40 miles hard and you should be fine as long as you build up to it. Remind me again, how far have you been riding for your "long rides"?

Heh...around 12 miles right now, hahahaha.  But I haven't been biking at all.

I did the 40 a couple of years ago on a whim - I drafted off some friends and somehow did it without any base at all.

Ok, so I see what you guys are saying, I guess a 40 mile bike isn't super high impact and I'll be ok.  Thanks!  The highest I will go I think is 70 miles because it's hilly here but it's flat where the century is, and by that time my half mary will be over so I can crank down the run LSD.  So, I think I've got it figured out!  Woohoo!  Now, if I can only stick to the plan....

Too bad that scale didn't have the ability to automagically appear in Connecticut

Wow, Mike. That's awesome!

My goals:
1. My first IM (Vineman) in under 14 hours
2. "World's Toughest" Duathlon under 6:30
3. Sub-2hr 1/2 marathon (hopefully in March)
4. Sub-4hr marathon in December
5. Single-digit body fat
6. Consistent training and balanced life

I have not been successful losing weight. My only weight loss was the lemonade diet. At least I'm good at not gaining weight!

Mike, what's your secret? What are you doing? What are your favorite weight loss meals?

I'm trying to count calories, but I'm very used to eating out a lot, and there's no telling how many calories are in most of that stuff. I don't eat really unhealthy stuff, just too much of it.

No "magic" secret here. I just like to eat and eat bad stuff for me. All I have done this year is cleaned up my diet. I still don't eat perfect as convience is what rules for me with my work and the way I operate. For example Here was yesterday

Breakfast: 2 pieces toast with PB and jelly, 1 glass of OJ

Snack: 2 pieces of string cheese, 3 Little Debbie 100 cal brownies

Snack: Whole Wheat bagel with Egg and cheese

Lunch: Subway 6 in Wheat Chicken Breast with lots of veggies and Honey Mustard

Snack: 2 Granola Bars, 1.5 cups cottage cheese, banana

Workouts: 1 bottle of Gatorade Endurance (worked out for 2.5 hours)

Dinner: Chicken Breast and broccoli

Dessert: FF Chocolate Pudding

So you can see my diet is anything "magic". I do drink a ton of water and have been pushing myself really hard while working out lately. My coach is pushing me to see what I can do. I think naturally I should weigh in the 180-190 range and I have just been overweight and out of shape.

My wife does weight watchers so a lot fo the meals she will make are WW friendly or WW Core.

Any other Q's just ask.

Lisa- That's a really good question and I've been wondering the answer myself. One of the books I have 'Going Long' is strongly opposed to those 'mega-weekends'. However, with the busy schedules I know the weekend tends to be the easiest for us to get them done. I'm interested to hear everyone's input on this one.

With that being said, I put my Long run and long bike at least two days apart during the season (Tue Long run, Sat long bike). Then again, even for my HIM my longest bike will only be in the 180-210 min range and my longest run will be only 90-100 minutes.

We're officially into the worst 2-3 weeks of our year-end season at work. Stick with me if you start to see the consistency slip. My base period begins 3/16 so as long as I have 1.5-2 months of prep I'm not worried, although i'm getting tired of all work and little working out

Going Long is an excellent book and resource. I totally agree with spliting up your long run and ride if possible but that is not  always possible. That said, currently my coach has my long run on Saturday and what I guess could be my long ride on Sunday. But I am only at 1:30 on the run and about the same on the bike.

What I think is the most important thing is to get them in. Some people with the luxury of time can schedule days in  between but if the weekend is all you got for time then go that route. Plus you usually aren't going hard.

I used bike a lot around Connecticut, especially Fairfield County, when I was in high school. There are some flat rides, though they might be hard to find. I seem to remember that some of the areas around Groton were pretty flat, and north of the Danbury area had some pretty flat valleys. There are also places like Block Island which are nice and reasonably flat. Black Rock highway in Fairfield from the Merritt Parkway to Putnam Park was always a nice ride, without a lot of traffic, and there used to be some Orchards to stop in to pick up fresh picked fuel apples, though it's not as flat as it looks.

Of course there are the 3 mile hills which just plain old suck.

But don't forget that this is all based on information from over 20 years ago. Man... when did I get so old?

I'm pretty near Fairfield county but have yet to bike out there.  New Haven area tends to not be flat.  Hubby and I have ridden to the top of East Rock park a few times.  I can make it, but it puts me in a foul mood and I don't enjoy the view at the top .

I just started doing these simplefit.org workouts (saw it in a Strength Training thread) because I secretly also want to be kind of ripped.  I just have to say, they are awesome.  For someone with no access to a gym, they are just what I needed.  Check 'em out.  Really awesome.

hey group...

haven't posted in a while, but I've still been reading all your posts :-) I've just been swamped with work and commitments.. go figure!

I love reading about all of your goals! It's so exciting to see what everyone is planning and working towards, big and small! Those are some impressive lists lol

Michael--> Nice work on the weight loss! Water weight or not, it's always nice to have a big number jump to get you started in the beginning.. I feel like I'm flat lined on my weight.. I'm 5'9 and a larger frame anyways, stuck at 162 lbs or so! I'd like to be 155 which seems easily doable.. but alas! Its been dropping slowly, I guess I should just stick it out!!

Wish I could weigh in on the doubling up of lsd workouts, but I don't have too much experience with that! But I think I agree it'd be better to space them out, but if you can't you can't right?

Some of you have read from my logs that I did my first brick the other day, and I freakin' loved it!! How ridiculous is that? I had my first real hard bike ride (about 55 minutes...) and then ran a mile and a quarter, it felt so good to run! I just felt like I'd done a great warmup and could really get into it.. I mean, I felt a bit wobbly at first, but I just enjoyed it all.

My massage therapist (who is also a personal trainer) has invited me to start doing some trainer rides with him (at no charge ) which is so awesome, it's great to have some one to do real bike work with, who's been cycling for years, and who shares the same passion for health and fitness, it's awesome! Good conversation and good cycling, it's nice!

On a side note, does anyone find that their non triathlete / lazy friends are down on you about the amount of working out you do? I find that lately people are coming out of the wood work and questioning the amount of exercise I'm doing? Almost like they are criticizing my life choice.. It's just been an interesting change in the last month.. anyone else have this experience??

Oh yes... and what the heck does SUAT mean?! Excuse my noobness...

I got bored the other day (read: procrastinated) and made a schedule for myself for the entire year.  Yup - mapped out my races/events, and what I need to do to get ready.  If I hadn't, I think I would have been in trouble because, actually, I've got a half mary coming up and I need to get started with this whole "Century" thing if I want to make it through, so it's a good thing!  It's a lot more volume than I've ever done, but hopefully I can do it.

Today I'm going for a trainer ride and watching the 1st half of "Hot Fuzz".  I'd go outside because it's nice today, but it's really hilly outside and I'm still a bit tired from my "almost" cold and I don't want to deal with any inclines, I just want some so an easy trainer spin for me with some 1 leg drills.

Tomorrow is a 1:10 run.

Lex - I know what you mean about lazy friends.  I don't have many myself that try to stop me or anything, most of them express awe and just "I could never do that".   My parents try to stop me - running a lot seems weird to them and they think it's just too much.  But then, the Chinese aren't really into distance running.   I do have friends, who when they see how much I eat, are like, "oh, but you can eat that much because you're so active" and proceed to way undereat.  That's one thing that really bothers/worries me, but when I try to get them to exercise, they're like, "oh, I could never do that, I'll just hang on the elliptical 45 minutes and I'm done for the week."

Anyway, hopefully you can inspire them.  It was a 4 year process for my more active friends to inspire me...slowly slowly slowly I came on the idea that a lot of exercise wasn't insane and here I am now

Have a great weekend all!

My running partner during the week is Chinese. She went from doing nothing to getting ready for her 1st marathon in less than a year. If it makes you feel better, my parents (caucasian) think I'm weird too, and have had misgivings. They were especially worried when I was icing my knees all during Thanksgiving, but then so was I

Have to hit the trainer hard today and then a nice 30 min run. Hope everyone finishes off there weekend strong!

Hope everyones having a great weekend! Life and very limited pool hours has killed my swimming plans all weekend... I ended up moving tonnes of sand out of out indoor riding arena instead...in the freezing cold.. woo! But I'm going to try and get a run and a ride in today instead of the swim and get into the pool in the AM!

I actually heard some birds singing and the sun was out today.. I'd thought I'd died and was in some alter universe!!

Hey group, hope everyone had a great weekend but now it is time to get down to business. We all have some big goals so now we need to work towards achieving them.

How about for our first challenge here we list our number of sessions we plan to do this week in each sport. IF you strength train or yoga or whatever you can list that too. We will try to keep each other accountable to make sure this week we stay consistent and hit all our sessions. Be realistic if you are not already on a plan but also push yourself. I'll go first.

Swim- 3

Bike- 2

Run- 5

Strength- 2

Good luck all on a great week!
