Offthegrid - 2009-02-26 11:00 PM excellent post re: trigger points! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I wouldn't be surprised if piriformis is involved also... I had some issues with that which I thought had cleared up but maybe have resurfaced and I need to pay more attention. How do you tell whether it's piriformis vs. gluteus minimus? I have pain in my calf, Achilles and heel. It's kind of a mess right now but already doing better from all the self-massage yesterday. It is a tough thing to massage yourself when it hurts so much!

In my case the problem was on the outside of the right calf and the TP for that was on the side of the right cheek.   The TPs for the gluteus minimus and piriformis which affect the back of the calf are really close to each other and it is best to just work the entire area and concentrate on the spot (or spots) that hurt the most.  I'm guessing you now have a chart that shows them.    These TPs are pretty deep and hurt like hell if that is your problem.    Not sure what you are using to get at them.   I use a hard rubber ball (actually a rubber baseball) - a softer ball (tennis ball) may be better to start.

If the problem is affecting your calf, achilles and heel, look to the Gastroc.   There are three TPs for the Gastroc.

In the case of my knees, I had knots in 6 or 7 different muscles that I had to work through.  It took me a while to get it sorted out because some of the knots in the quads were really deep.   More often than not (my experience), you don't  feel the pain at the TP until you find it and start working on it.

Take your time and only inflict a level of pain that is tolerable.   Also note that bruising is not unusual.

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did it this morning, and the foot pain on my right leg is gone. Gone! My left Achilles is still bothering me, but that's been going on for a long time, so I expect it will take longer.

You're right - I had no pain in my right calf until I began massaging it. I did have pain on my left calf, but I didn't know what was going on with it or how to get it to go away.

These medical goobers just kept saying, "stretch the calf, stretch the calf," blah blah, and that never did anything to help. I feel like bopping them on the head about why they didn't tell me about this sooner. I even told the one doctor that my calf hurt, and he felt it and said everything felt normal. GRR!!!

I don't have a TP chart yet - that book hasn't arrived yet. I rolled around on one of the balls in the piriformis but didn't find anything, though.

I also found I'm really sensitive at the muscle on the front of the shin, too. I have some small bruising there from the therapy.

Although, here's the really interesting part for everybody. Part of the DVD I got said that people often have worse problems on the left side. Why? When you drive, your knee splays out, making your piriformis tight, your hamstrings tight, which eventually pulls your hip down and affects that calf, too.

They recommend putting a yoga block between your leg and the car door. I tried it, and I could actually feel the stretch on my piriformis halfway through my 45-min. commute. Amazing. I definitely will have to pay more attention to the piriformis and stretching it as well.

They also recommend when sitting at the desk at work to keep your legs together (holding the yoga block, but that seems a little weird and inconvenient) so they don't splay out.

I feel so hopeful and optimistic that things are going to improve, that I couldn't even sleep last night. Two testimonials on the DVD were from really accomplished Ironmen athletes who were told by surgeons/doctors that they would have to give up running forever. And then they did this stuff and were able to heal.

Yeah for muscle torture!

OK, silly question for the day: How much water is too much to drink during the day, without electrolytes? Or is the number so high it'd be virtually impossible to reach?

I drank well over 130 ounces yesterday. Guess that's what happens when you stop drinking soda.

I'm not doing any heavy training or anything, I'm just curious.

From About.com (YMMV)

It's Not How Much You Drink, It's How Fast You Drink It!

The kidneys of a healthy adult can process fifteen liters of water a day! You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time. As a general guideline, most adults need about three quarts of fluid each day. Much of that water comes from food, so 8-12 eight ounce glasses a day is a common recommended intake. You may need more water if the weather is very warm or very dry, if you are exercising, or if you are taking certain medications. The bottom line is this: it's possible to drink too much water, but unless you are running a marathon or an infant, water intoxication is a very uncommon condition.

Good morning!

I had a good run this morning. Hard to believe, but it was 30 degrees warmer than when I ran on Wednesday. Much windier however. I'm really enjoying the morning light again and will be sad to lose it again with the time change. However, the time change will allow me to restart my bike commute to work and get home before dark.

I'm hoping to get in a ride tomorrow, between today's rain and tomorrow's rain. After finishing out the month Peachy I'll probably take Sunday completely off.

soo true Nicole...plus, soooooooooooooo very good for the hydration of your skin, flushing your systems......it is shown that those who are elderly and do not drink much water seem to prune-up faster in the skin cells.....seeing I am at that wrinkle stage...... I DRINK TONS OF WATER! haha sure doesnt seem to be helping! but then again I am a product of the late 50's and we used to think it was really cool to sun our selves...more like BAKE ourselves! and I am reaping the consecquences of all those days in the sun! so all you cute young things...dont go to the tanning beds and hang out in the sun...and if you are make sure to lather on the sun screen! and drink lots of water!

So off to do errands, I'll check back in the afternoon. Know that I am so proud of all of you for facing pain, family life, healing from sickness, knee pain, long runs/swims/bike rides........you name it ....all in the name of this lovely sport called Tri !!  You all have such a special place in my heart !

Now that I think about it, when I had trouble with my knee caps it was worse on the left side. Would this also affect the ITB and knee?  Hmmm...

What's this yoga block you're using in the car?

Remember when my dh said he'd buy me a new bike ?....... for valentines day ?....... yeah, not seing that happen.

Anyway, got up this morning and he'd purchased two bike tires (one with no spokes etc... just a tire and the other with teh spokes etc).... I'll have to take pics for you guys to see.
Problem is this........I truly have no idea what a "road slick" looks like.

Does anyone have a picture I can see ?....... I'll show you pics of what he picked up and let you see if they are what I need on my mountain bike.......but I think they are not.
On a good note, I found out that one of the men in my spin class works on bikes, and if I am stuck with this mtn bike he can change the tires for me !

I will have to take pics of the tires, and get the pics of me in that tri outfit so you can see it adn tell me if I made a good choice or big mistake ! lol

changing tires (and tubes) sucks! And I suck at it!

But you have to buy yourself a set of tire levers. They are inexpensive, plastic devises that you use to get the tire off of there. YouTube has a bunch of instructional videos -- what did the world do before YouTube?

I am confident now, finally, that I can change my tube when I get a flat, but it still takes me like 30 minutes and about 72 curse words.

Nicole, you can get a yoga block at wal-mart/target, etc. ... it is basically a foam block about the size of 4 bricks put together.

I plan to buy another just to keep in my car, and maybe one more for actually doing yoga.

I am sitting here at my desk trying to keep my legs together and from splaying out all day, and it is hard!

everybody: Something really strange has happened...

I don't mind doing core exercises any more!

I used to dread it - and, in fact, really never did it. I couldn't really do much crunches anyway. Maybe 6 or 8, or some small number, and then I got exhausted and couldn't do any more.

But this step class I was taking did an amazing amount of core work, and one day, I did it all! I thought it was a fluke that the instructor shortened it that day, but the next class, the same thing happened.

So I did these roll downs yesterday, and the core exercise sheet I was using said to work on being able to roll back up. And I could do it! Repeatedly! I was amazed.

I'd like to maybe get into doing more pilates for core strength. Does anyone have any video recommendations?

I started doing Pilates for my core work and I think it is paying off in better body position in the pool. I'm using "Pilates for Beginners " by Maggie Rhoades. It's the first and only Pilates DVD I have so I can't say how it compares to others. One of the things I like about it is that it has lots of different workouts (full workouts and shorter, more targeted workouts), and two levels of workouts ("starting out" and beginner) with workouts ranging from 10-15 minutes up to 30-40 minutes. I was doing the "starting out" full workout for a while but I'm now able to get through the beginner full workout. When this gets too easy (ha!) I'll probably look for something else in the series.

One more thing and then I'll stop yammering for now.

This post is possibly the greatest thing I ever read on swimming. It's really, really long, so print it out and read before bed or whatever.

I read "Total Immersion" but some things just didn't click. I'm anxious to get back in the pool and try out my new understanding of body position/breathing.

I want to get the TI DVD also but just haven't yet.

I'd like to maybe get into doing more pilates for core strength. Does anyone have any video recommendations?

thats great susie...happy for you!

not sure about pilates...maybe someone else can help here!?!?

Offthegrid - 2009-02-25 10:22 PM I am trying to really focus on not lifting my head when I breathe, but find it so tough to not do that ...

When I was taking lessons my coach said to turn your head as if you are trying to look back over your shoulder. I think it's pretty much impossible to lift your head if you do it this way.

Yep...either back over the shoulder or think about having a tennis ball under your chin- the only way to get your breath will be to roll to the side- this should help with eliminating 'flat' swimming.

wow that seems like a long link, if it does not work let me know.
I took a pic of the tire that it turns out dh put on my bike (without me knowing).  So the two tires I saw this a.m was the one he took off and the one he put on. (told you I was bike stupid)

Anyway, on the picture the one closest to the camera is the one from my mountain bike.  Closest to Lexi is the "new" one he got a wmart.  THe only one that would fit and the smoothest one he said he could find.  So what are your opinions on the one he has just put on ?.......... I told him I'd rather if he was going to go buy stuff to wait and take me, not just friggin do it himself.

Oh and today he made another snarky "because it will make you so much faster ha ha" comment.  He has been warned nicely and not so nicely that there is no allowances made for making fun of me while I train for this !  Here he goes and does it again , I had to tell him again" remember what happened last time you tried to pull that stunt ?".......  it was bad trust me !

So any help is appreciated ! Thank team !

Alas. BUT, we do have Wegman's. It's a 30-min drive out of my way, but the food quality (and price) is so much better than the redneck stores near my house.

i used to love to shop at wegmans when I lived in New Orleans....but 30 minutes away! dang...I am not going to ever biatch about driving the extra 5 minutes to Trader Joes again! hope you get a t joes soon! I could not live without mine! yesterday when I asked a sales person about an item...he asked me if I would like him to open and give it a try...now how many stores would do that!??? none that I know of! darn it was only a liquid sugar free item...next time I will ask him about the beer or wine...but of course after lent ;(

I looooove Costco too though it is a dangerous thing for the budget. I tell myself cash only, but the debit card always comes in and I tell myself keep it to the shopping list, but of course there is always something else that we 'need'.

Love Trader Joes and make a point of seeing one out everytime we are south of the 49th....but sadly nothing like it in Canada.

The picture I posted was from Performance Bike (about $10) but there are many online shops that would carry these if you can't find them locally. They really will make a huge difference in your bike speed on the road as compared to using nubbies.

I can't really tell you how to deal with your hubby except to continue doing what you are doing and don't let him get away with it. What's his problem anyway?

Ultimately the smoother the tire is, the less resistance it will have and faster you will go with the same effort. So while the new one is less knobby- you can still find slicks out there. Is there an REI close by or a bike shop? Just ask for 'slicks' for your mountain bike. You should also record the size of your wheel- as they are fairly standard but there are a couple of variations out there.

When purchasing tubes- also look at size and the type of valve- Most mountain bikes have a Schrader valve (looks like the one on your car tire) while there is also the Presta valve which may appear skinnier.

Love hearing about all the TP stuff- thanks Dan and Susie for the info.

I have never thought about the splay of the knee in the car. Even with the right leg, if I am wearing heels, I usually just plant my heel and then turn my foot from gas to brake. I am very interested to try the whole yoga block thing....we don't have one at home but I am wondering if a thick towel rolled up will do the trick.
