Scott - I was a burned out Lawyer.  That is why I don't practice anymore and work at a law school.  I was doing children issues - Bad moms and dads who abuse and neglect.  Too Sad and too Stressful for me.  Life is too short to be miserable.  I still work out to deal with stress but It isn't as bad as it was.  Hang in there.  We al feel your pain.  PS - You had asked about my swim in the RaceReport.  My time reflected all Free Style and no breast stroke.  YEs, I am slow!

Leah - How are you deciding what races to do?  Do you have a method?  Did you decide on a tri coach?  How are you feeling?

Lisa - WHERE ARE YOU?!!  Everything ok??  Miss you!

Kiri - Looks like you have a lot of races in your future.  Too bad you couldn't do Barb or Door with a fellow Nutso!  Makes it more fun to see a friendly face. I liked your post on work stress.

Keeley - Sounds like your work outs are ramping up.  Great job.  Do as much as you can.  Take it from me, your race will be here before you know it.

Debb - How are you doing?  Are you liking your IM Group work outs?  How is that all working?

Judi - Hanging in there with the self coached swim?  I really appreciate all the encouragement.

Anyone up for a Weight Loss competition for April?
I want to drop twenty before IMAZ.  Biggest Loser again?  Let's go April 1 - April 30.  Highest percentage of weight loss wins.  If you are in, give me your starting weight today or tomorrow so I can start a spreadsheet.  Winner gets a prize!

HIM Tips:
(1)  Sunscreen - I am dark and I got sun burnt.  8 and 1/2 hours in the sun got me good.
(2)  Chapstick - Like Leah, my lips are a mess.
(3)  The Run - I was spent by the time I got to the run.  If you find yourself in the same situation, see if you can find markers that you can walk and run to.  It really helped me keep going.
(4)  Train, Train, Train . . . I thought I was ready but I should have worked harder.   This time around I will do a better job sticking to a plan.

October 17      Long Beach Half Marathon  - Leah

  • November 21st - IM AZ - Kate and Leah

Leah - Consider doing the Soma HIM with me in October.  You could get used to the dirty Tempe Town Lake and get a feel for what our IM course will look like.  Not exactly the same but you can get a feel for the place.  You could also stay with me to save money on hotel.  We could also ride the IMAZ bike course loop.  I think we do 3 loops during the actual race.  We could do one just so you can get the feel of it a month out.  The other option is to do Nathan's OLY in September.  Same place as Soma and IMAZ, same lake.  Same offer on staying and the ride.  Let me know what you think.  Kate

I had an AHA moment about my swim.  My catch is nonexistant which means the pull isn't going to pull any water.  4 years and the guy couldn't explain this to me?  Man...I am soooooo over his class!

Queen - WOW..it's a good thing you discovered it on your own but too bad the coach couldn't see that? Interesting.

I'll be swimming today after my chiropractor appointment and hoping to get a bike in, probably in the gym though it's still raining cats & dogs here. It felt like forever before I warmed up after my fun soaked run last night. But as my friend says, you race in the elements so you may as well train in the elements. All of the girls in my running group bailed so I still went. I'm glad I did, I really needed it and since I pushed myself I'm a bit tired and sore today so I slept in this morning. I think this week may be the "sleep" week my body is craving. So I may not get my 2x/days in but I'll still get some workouts in.

I'll weigh myself later and post for the April Biggest Loser!

He may have seen it but if you look at the emails sent between us in the past couple weeks (posted in my blog) you will see he basically blamed my laco of progress on me and decided not to discuss things with me cause he felt I took it too personally or didn't pay any attention to him.  We had this discussion a couple years ago and I told him he neded to keep reminding me when he was trying to change things in the stroke.  Obviously he didn't take the time....Whatever, I am over the whole thing and doing my own thing from now on.

Yes, I'm in, I keep bouncing between 212-214. It's really getting annoying and I need to focus on dropping the last 15 on my weight loss goal! I'll post weight tomorrow morn.

Me too. I want to lose at least 10 this month.

I was never planning to still be this heavy into Ironman training. We start heavy building in June and my HIM is in July so I'm like to lose at least 20 before then... Should put me about 15 above goal (although I'd like to get to 145 as a "race weight" even if I don't stay that low)

Although I'm not competing for the prize as I'm providing it this time.

My Weigh in was about 185.0 this morning.

I may have more races to add the the schedule but I'm still working that out. Might do a half mary at the end of may and I'm thinking maybe I should pick up and Oly.

Kate do you have a link to that SOMA race? Sounds interesting.

As far as group training is going... good but were not really into anything besides base training at the moment, but I like having a set workout schedule again. I had some mixed feelings last night when my coach came up to me and said something like "Oh look at you running... good job and at a good pace too!" Feelings are mixed because 1) Hello? I've run ALL the workouts so far including the ones we do after bike class has she not noticed? and 2) I was only running 4.8 mph! I normally run around 5.0 or more but it was a strength heavy class last night so the legs were a little spent. It was not a good pace! I wonder if she expects that little of me? Anyway I choose to just let it roll off my back. I know she meant well with the encouragement, and generally I really love my coaches.

I'm in on the weight loss action.  My starting weight as of today is 230.6.  I only need to lose about 40 lbs.  I should be able to do that in a month..lol.

Hope everyone is having a good day.  Volleyball tournament tonight so I did not do my run workout.  Saving the legs.  Last time I ran before volleyball I felt like a slug.

Leah - How are you deciding what races to do?  Do you have a method?  Did you decide on a tri coach?  How are you feeling?

I am deciding what races to do primarily by what is available.  I knew I wanted to do two HIMs as IM training and Barb's Race is the only one left in California that I know about that isn't sold out.  Well, there's one more in May, but I thought that was a little soon.  I would love it if some of you other Nutsos did Barb's Race with me.  I didn't think about looking in Arizona for HIMs and I think Soma sounds just right and am going to sign up for it.  So, I do get my two HIMs before the IM.  Thanks for the heads-up on Soma.  Who else is going to do it with us?

I'm doing the two half marathons because there is this California Dreamin' Race Series where you get a jacket if you do 3 and I already did Surf City.  A girlfriend is doing SF so I would be doing it with her.  And Long Beach is local and I do it every year or so anyway.

My plan is to have at least one 100+ mile bike ride per month and preferably once every three weeks, but I don't know if I can pull that off.  I like the idea of doing centuries because you get a little different scenery and it's just a change from the usual.  Several people I know have given me their local (more or less local) 100+ miles bike routes so I should have some variety.

I like your HIM tips.  I'm fair and I'm glad I didn't get any more burnt than I did.  I am so glad I was wearing a bike jersey with sleeves, because I almost went sleeveless.  My lips are still a wreck.  I also found someone to walk with and that did make all the difference.  And yes, train, train, train.  No matter how well you think you've trained, it probably isn't enough.  And I don't want that to be the story at the IM.

I do not have a tri coach and I feel very good about it  I am going to do the clinics.  My 4-week swim clinic starts April 12.  I have signed up for the Bike Marker session, but I don't have a date and time yet.  I haven't signed up for the run one yet.

As for IM training, I am starting that May 1.  For April I am continuing to work on my base and basic endurance.  So, I plan to keep my biking and running levels where they were, meaning no rides more than 60 miles or runs longer than 10 miles.

I feel fine.  I felt fine the next day.  And that's the funny thing because I was totally and completely depleted at the end of the race, but the next day it was like I hadn't done anything more than I usually do.  I have pondered this and have decided that I was sufficiently well-trained for this race muscle-wise, but not cardiovascular-wise.  So, I am going to spend April working on that.  For instance, I usually run 5 min run/1 min walk.  For my run this morning I just ran the whole thing and just took two one-minute walk breaks.  And I could do it so I should be doing that.  I think I haven't been pushing myself in that way.  So now I will.

What about you?

Here is the link for Soma.  NUTSOs are all welcome to join us.  I'll put you all up the best I can to help save costs.  It will be warm though so beware all you cold weather folks.  Temps could be in the 90s.  http://redrockco.com/soma-triathlon  This will be good practice for us IMAZ'ers.  I think both Leah and I are thinking about CA70.3 again next year too.  It was a nice race if any of you want to do that one with us.

Leah - As for my race scheduling, I'm still in research mode.  I'm looking up training plans and trying to figure things out.  I'm also looking at what other more veteran IM racers are signing up for to see what their strategy is.  I've been leaning toward meeting with the tri coach and getting help in specific areas such as (1)  Better understanding Heart Rate training.             (2)  Cycling techique.  (3)  Swim tips - he just took the Total Immersion training.  This tri coach is ala carte.  You can pay per month or pay for specific services.  We'll see.

Debb -  Glad you are liking the training.  Don't worry about the comment.  Lame but dont let it distract you from your long term goal.  Great mileage this month!!

Queenie - That coach sounds like a dud.  Sorry you had to deal with that.  Do you have any other coaching options you can consider?  A fresh set of eyes maybe?

Keeley - Hang in there with your work outs.  Sounds like you are pushing it more.  How does your body feel now that your leg issues have been figure out?  Big difference?

Scott, Keeley, and Kiri - I want Debb's prize!  Bring it on!  I'm on a mission this month.  If Scott drops 40, I will drop 41!!

Lisa - I MISS YOU.  COME BACK!

I got a long run and ride in today to finish out the month fairly comparable to last month - yay for consistency. April is going to see a lot of long rides if the weather holds for the weekends. I'm getting a bit nervous about building smartly to century on 15th, I should be okay, but cutting it close - really would've liked a couple more weeks... Alas!

Tomorrow I'm going to my first yoga class - I usually do my own routines with DVDs at home. This should be interesting - as I am overweight and inflexible - what a great combination for yoga! I'm going to try a beginner hatha on thursday and then on sunday nights they have a yin class with focuses on loosening the hips, lower spine and pelvis. I need that!

Lisa, where are you, I hope you're okay!?!

Kate,

I have a video session in a couple of weeks....waiting for feedback from that.  I did my swim today and the guy who filled in last summer for the dud was there.  He made 3 suggestions to me to help the catch and follow through that seemed to help a lot.  I might consider private lessons with him if needed....have to check on the finances.  This isn't cheap for a 2 RN salary household!!

I've decided to give all of you a chance in the weight loss contest..My actual weight today was 232.6..Consider the extra 2 lbs my gift to you all to make this thing even.

Played in my volleyball tournament last night and cannot move today. Both knees are shot and I bruised my elbow...plus we stunk it up..the worst I have played in months.  Well that was the last night for indoor Wednesday night league.  I now can run on Wednesdays and not have to worry about the beat up knees on Thursday.

Any fun plans for Easter?  We do not have family here in Colorado so we usually do a cookout of brats, and burgers and invite all of the other people we know who are also Colorado orphans..and there are a lot of them...especially from the midwest.
