Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dangremond - 2012-06-08 1:08 PM First, good luck to all the racers this weekend. You will all be in my thoughts and I can't wait to hear how everyone does. Second, radiology confirmed I have not 1 but 3 stress fractures. All are Grade 1 with only 1 being Symptomatic. I go back to the Doctor in 6 weeks for another exam. Until then no impact activities beyond walking. I don't have to wear a boot or cast and as long as there is no pain I can cycle and swim. Pretty depressing. I'm trying to look at it positively though - great chance to focus on and improve my swim. Have to reevaluate my diet and look at what sources of Vitamin D and Calcium I am getting. Initial thoughts are that I'm not getting enough. Also, when I start running again it will have to be in baby steps - short distances at easy paces. Great time to start all over and maybe even give MAF a full/real chance.
Mitch that stinks! You will come out the other end a force in the water. Edited by JBacarella 2012-06-08 8:47 PM |

-Jim- How do you tolerate the cold water? I keep trying to get out there and the water is so cold I'm cramping up in my feet and hands within a few mins. Had to go back to the pool to get a real workout in.
Scott, I couldn't do it this early last year. I bought an Xterra vortex this spring and have forced myself to wear a swim cap, so only my hands face and feet are exposed. I also wear ear plugs. I had a major panic my first year swimming because when the cold water hit my tympanic membrane I would become nausious and was vomiting within 5 minutes. Looked it up and learned that cold water in the ears causes like a vertigo. I am normally comfortable within 200 yards. Last night I did get brain freeze when I swam after the rain. Tonight was nice since it was such a hot day, and I went after I cut the grass. Edited by JBacarella 2012-06-08 9:07 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch, I'm very sorry to hear the bad news, I hope you heal soon buddy. It really sucks to be sidelined when you have that much drive I bet, don't lose perspective, and the best way to do that is to focus on the other activities that will not extend nor hamper your healin process. Time to become a swimmer. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Miserably cold, windy and raining in Boise this morning, don't expect a fast race... I don't! I'll try to enjoy the day regardless, being here is a gift already, so I'll suck it up and race! ![]() |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch, sorry to hear about the stress fractures. Hopefully it will heal up quickly and you can get back to it. In the meantime, become a swimming machine! Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great morning swim with the Masters Team. Coach was on deck and gave some great tips that made a world of difference! I completed my longest swim of my life. I went to practice 30 minutes early to make sure I was able to get all the way through the main set. Total pool time was about 2 hours but I only counted for 1:30. With 30 going to recovery and talkng to the coach! I also had my fastest laps so far! 1:30 with 3150meters

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bike has been racked and 20 min warm up swim on the course is complete. Got stung once by a sea nettle on a spot where i forgot to apply lotion. Water temp announced at expo was 74. WTC rules put wetsuit threshold at 76.1. Gonna be a close call. |

![]() | ![]() Olympic Tri today. 2:42:37, but course was short. Bike was 22.65 miles by my Garmin. Run was 6.03 according to my Garmin. (Swim was long including run up hill. Garmin has 1.02 miles instead of .9). Did ok until run. swim: 30m 42s (1:52 per 100 if actually .9 miles) t1: 2m 29s bike: 1h 11m 34s (19 mph if 22.65 miles) t2: 2m 3s run: 55m 49s (9:16 pace if 6.03 miles) total 2h 42m 37s Basically, good race except for disastrous run. (My wife has said I've lost my running mojo.) Last year I did the run in 47 minutes and change. PR in 10k is 42:56. Basically started walk running during uphill in first mile. Can't decide whether it was the heat, lack of run fitness, nutrition, hydration, getting old, or getting soft. It is probably a combination of nutrition, lack of self knowledge at the beginning of the run and getting soft (seriously). Nutrition: Before race I had a HEED bar and I had HEED during t1 and throughout run, but never had any of the GU's I brought. I was planning on having them during the transitions, but was too muddle headed and forgot. (Forgot my race belt with number in T2 as well.) If I had tried to eat a Gu during the bike, I would have crashed. (Something to practice I guess.) Lack of self knowledge: If you had asked me a quarter mile into the run if I could keep a 7:30 pace for the whole 10k, I probably would have answered, "sure, that's what I did last time." In my head, the question was whether to go for 7:15. Then a half mile later, I'm walking. I find this puzzling. But I also in all seriousness think I'm getting soft. I'm getting into the habit of saying "screw it" and walking. I don't like this. |

Chris, That's still a good time, especially for what you went through with your injuries. I did a SBR brick today and my run was awful. I reached the screw it stage and walked and ran.
For those of you that don't know, the weather is awful in Boise, windy, cold and rainy. The half iron bike was shortened to 12 miles. So basically, it's a swim and a HM run. And we all know how Ernesto loves to run. He moved from 66 in his division after the swim, to 59 after the bike and is currently in 20th place after the first 3 miles of the run.

Jackie, I was just composing a post on the shortened Boise when you posted. I was going to say, "Poor Ernesto". Not so sure now. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris- it was a good race, and that is still a good time. I understand how you feel when you say screw it. I then spend 2 days to a week beating myself up. I don't know about last years circumstances, but this year you spent a lot of time rehabing your injury this your, so your run fitness could not have been the same. Go get em next time when you didn't spend your spring injured. |
![]() ![]() |
Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hang in there Chris. There will be more races. Think how awesome you'll be next year when you don't have to rehab from an injury. Sorry to hear about the conditions for Ernesto but at least he is moving up in the field.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris - I'd kill for that run time. I understand why you're disappointed with it, but you put in a good performance overall. Given the problems you've had you're doing well to be where you are. Just keep working at it and you'll overcome it all. Ernesto - well done on your performance. Hope you enjoyed the day, despite the change to the bike course. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today I had a bit of a breakdown on my run. It was all going well until about 10 miles, then I just lost control of my heart rate. I couldn't get it down no matter what I did. I'd appreciate an opinion, from people who know, about my Garmin file (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/187261660), but I think I de-coupled due to overheating/dehydration. It was raining when I went out, so I put a long sleeve top on. Then it kept changing between raining and quite sunny and hot. I also had to stop during the swim session because I got a really bad headache and started feeling sick and dizzy. After 10 minutes of cooling down and drinking plenty I started feeling better, so I think I was still dehydrated from my run. So apparently I need to work on drinking more during (and before) my runs... - Jim:S 4/B 5/R 4 / Rest Days 1: Total =13; 11:38':31" |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() Rachel, That looks to me like classic heat induced decoupling. You are correct that starting at mile 10 you had to go slower each mile to keep your heart rate roughly constant. Then you had a hill at mile 13 until the end (15 miles) and your heart rate went up with the hill (not surprising). Beats me what to advise. Run more in the heat I guess. If you get better advise, tell me. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris- it is impossible to be @ 100% both mentally and phisically for every race. So congrats on a good race and a very good time. Next one will be better for you! Ernesto, great effort so far! From my cel on the beach I lost access to Ironmanlive, any updates? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good job everyone so far in your races! I'm trying to relax in San Fran at the hotel now, it's a tough juggling act to keep two young children busy and happy on vacation and at the same time not tire yourself out by walking a million miles before a race. Picked up my rental bike this morning, a Trek Madone 5.5, seems like a real nice bike, super light and hopefully it will help me out big time on the hills tomorrow. Been to the expo, all done, body marked, got my packet and ready to go! I'm #844, I'll check back in tomorrow after the race! |
