Middle of workout HR readings keep getting lower until they hover in 70's range and occassionally drop out all together. Changed battery thinking it was that. Using HR gel. Still having problem. Any thoughts beyond bed strap and time to replace?
I was reading elsewhere on here that someone was having problems with their HRM. They said it had to do with the shirt covering the HRM. Too much static electricity. Not sure if that is the case for you or not. I get the affect of my HRM jumping up when starting a run and I think it has to do with static electricity. On my trainer it seems when I lift up my left arm to mess with my computer for a new movie or tv show, it jumps as well. Strange as can be.
Mitch - it must have been a virus as I experienced stange garmin HR behavior last night too! Apart from a known running shirt that casuses static, I have never had issues with my HR until last night. The HR would randomly drop out then reappear but at very low rates. It turned out that I had placed my HR strap a lot higher than normal. After moving it down the problem went away. |

Tomorrow's 10 mile run should be telling in terms of where I am on my recovery back from injury. I've gone as far as 8.5 miles so 10 on the dread mill seems appropriate.

Any thoughts beyond bed strap and time to replace? I purchased the Hanson's Marathon Method book per Jackie's recommmendation. I'm about half way through it and for the $10 download on Apple's bookstore it is well worh it. They are big proponents of lots of easy days spread over 6 days with workouts deemed Something of Substance (SOS) sprinkled in. Their plans, for those unfamiliar, follow a common pattern. Mon - Easy I'm following their HM plan and we get to see soon how the plan worked for Jackie - sounds like she's happy with it at the moment. Definitely think its a good and honest approach to the rigors of endurance running. If you go this route, there is really no place for cycling at your current pace. You will need max recovery from each of the workouts (including the easy ones) so rest becomes critical; extra cycling workouts will not get you points in the marathon. Swim workouts would be a much better alternative, but in good measure. |

I'm beginning the process of mapping out a HIM plan (if I decide to pursue that goal this season) and then will decide if and how to do a Marathon subsequent to the HIM. The book makes clear that some cross training is doable but more than "some" is not advisable. The HM plan I'm following currently is making it challenging to get quality rides in. -Mitch |

As to chiropractors. I feel they are a short term solution to ease the pain however the long term solution is to strengthen the right muscles which has caused the back to be out of place. I'd concentrate of fixing the muscles rather than popping the back. I've dealt with this before in my upper back where I had very weak upper back muscles and my pec muscles were very strong. Started sucking my shoulders forward creating extreme pain to the point of nausea. Once I started getting my upper back muscles strong again the pain went away.

I have used chiropractic for several years. I only use it when I have a disk out of place. Be careful! If they can cure cancer, you have a quack. We had one that claimed to make you live to 100 (my wife works for a nursing home and has seen 100, you don't want it). A good chiro will take you out of neck and back pain (which is all they can legally adjust in most states), and keep you comfortable. At our local HIM, we have a chiro at the finish line. Joe, glad to see you are on your way back. Edited by JBacarella 2013-02-20 7:37 PM |
