wow that seems like a long link, if it does not work let me know.
I took a pic of the tire that it turns out dh put on my bike (without me knowing).  So the two tires I saw this a.m was the one he took off and the one he put on. (told you I was bike stupid)

Anyway, on the picture the one closest to the camera is the one from my mountain bike.  Closest to Lexi is the "new" one he got a wmart.  THe only one that would fit and the smoothest one he said he could find.  So what are your opinions on the one he has just put on ?.......... I told him I'd rather if he was going to go buy stuff to wait and take me, not just friggin do it himself.

Oh and today he made another snarky "because it will make you so much faster ha ha" comment.  He has been warned nicely and not so nicely that there is no allowances made for making fun of me while I train for this !  Here he goes and does it again , I had to tell him again" remember what happened last time you tried to pull that stunt ?".......  it was bad trust me !

So any help is appreciated ! Thank team !

The picture I posted was from Performance Bike (about $10) but there are many online shops that would carry these if you can't find them locally. They really will make a huge difference in your bike speed on the road as compared to using nubbies.

I can't really tell you how to deal with your hubby except to continue doing what you are doing and don't let him get away with it. What's his problem anyway?

[/QUOTE

Thanks for the response !  Oh sheesh, well for Christmas dh says "sorry I did not get you much but I figure we'll get you a bike or get the one you have fixed up".  Then here comes valentines day, he says "I'll get you a new bike"........   then he hears how much they cost........ and wants to try and fix up the one I have .  HOWEVER in the meantime we have had some all out screamfests complete with my angry tears "do not joke about this, do not laugh at me"..........  EVER AGAIN !!!!!

He seemed to get it, for some reason it was fun to "rib" me there for awhile and that got old fast.  So today's little rib is just a no tolerance policy infrigement ! lol  He thinks I want slicks so that I can win the tri, he does not GET that it's to make the bike easier for the run.........  so I just emailed him to push that point home !

I have one bike shop within 1/2 hour of me, I'll try to hit them this weekend and at least get a helmet.  I can't find any that fit me at wmart, the 14+ size just does not work.  I only have walmart here, no target, no bike shops, we live in a small town (which sucks in this case )! lol

Ultimately the smoother the tire is, the less resistance it will have and faster you will go with the same effort. So while the new one is less knobby- you can still find slicks out there. Is there an REI close by or a bike shop? Just ask for 'slicks' for your mountain bike. You should also record the size of your wheel- as they are fairly standard but there are a couple of variations out there.

When purchasing tubes- also look at size and the type of valve- Most mountain bikes have a Schrader valve (looks like the one on your car tire) while there is also the Presta valve which may appear skinnier.

Thank you so much for the response !

I would take those back and get more of a slick....there should be little or no tread..they make them for mtn bikes. This will make riding your bike sooo much easier and you will be able to sneak up and pass all your competitors rather then sounding like a mac truck coming up on them.

I do have to give you husband....KUDOS for trying!

and tell the husband - snarky comments only will land him in the "doghouse" and we all know that this is not somewhere we like to be placed!

the size of the tire you need is usually located on the size of mtn bike rims....but if not - i suggest that you take off your tire and bring it in for the first purchase.

that sucks Jules...you just let us at him! ;(

if it is money that he is trying to save, then you need to mention that fixing it right the first time is key to saving! knobbies like Yvonne and Nicole said...will slow you down and are for riding mainly in the dirt!  I used to ride my mtn bike all the time on long road rides...and I can tell you that the woman I usually was able to beat in mtn bike races was kicking my booty on the road...they rode with ease and I was fighting to just keep up! truly makes a HUGE difference.

as for helmet what size do you wear? I have a few extra sporty bell helmets..if you pm me I will send you pics and can mail them tomorrow so that you get them in time....and plus, not sure of your size...I have a 50cm Fuji bike that I will sell to you for only $400+ shipping. I realize you will not get it for next weekends race, but if 50cm fits you...it is a great bike for the price. It would cost you close to $1000+ with upgraded components we added.

alluminum frame: has shimano 105 components, gossamer cranks, box pedals...

would probably cost around $75-$100 to ship...or you can pick it up for free! ready for a trip to san diego?

MEN! GRR!!

(sorry to the guys in this group ... you are much more sensitive.)

Here I go writing a book again ...

You just keep doing your own thing, girl!

A wise person told me that people do not like to see people out of the box ... that is, they don't like to see what they're comfortable with change. So your getting fit and taking care of yourself is, for whatever reason, making him uncomfortable.

But the truth is you can't be the best wife, mother, friend, etc., unless you are taking care of yourself and your health!

So don't you dare let his sarcasm defeat you. And I bet in a couple or months he'll come to you with a puppy dog look and say, "gee, I wish I could exercise, too ... "

As for the bike, if you can't afford Julie's offer, seriously - get yourself on Craigslist and Freecycle (yahoo group) IMMEDIATELY. You can find used road bikes for very cheap or free. It might not be the absolute "perfect" fit for you, but it will surely be better than a mountain bike for riding on the road.

I *think* he was trying to do something nice for you by putting the tires on the bike ... he didn't realize (I hope) that they were the wrong ones. So try not to be *too* hard on him for that. But as for the sarcasm, just let it roll off your back.

I once let my partner's lack of support drive me away from triathlon, and it was the worst thing for me. I turned into a miserable, cranky person who resented having to always fight for a little time to work out. If you're not healthy, if you're not exercising, then you're not happy.

Today, it's cool and I try to schedule most of my workouts at times that won't infringe on our time. But it took a while to get to this point, for a variety of reasons.

In time, your hubby should realize this, too.

one more thing (I think)

My partner used to (and sometimes still does) makes comments sometimes like, "they shouldn't make the bikes so easy to ride; that's cheating" and garbage like that.

Hey - you'll be admired for riding that bike in the race, and NO ONE will look at you funny or weird, so don't get caught up in that.

But there is nothing like the feeling of riding a road bicycle, cruising along at 20-25 mph. You just won't be able to hit those speeds on a mountain bike on the road (unless you're an ex-pro, maybe.

Didn't really have cravings for it, either.

and if they do say something mean or ugly....leave them in the dust and you show them who rules!

fyi - - - i did have a bad experience one of my first triathlons....was on a cross bike (kinda like a mtn bike with slicks but a little sleeker frame) was not a very expensive bike I grant you that..but a bike! and as I was lining up to enter the transition area....he turned to me and said this is for racers only! I about burst into tears. Not sure if he was looking at me or my weight...but instead of letting him know how he hurt my feelings I just shoved my race number in his face.....I made sure to memorize his race number so I could see who he was when race results came out....and do you know that even though he was racing some fancy smancy bike...I beat his bike time!!!! My husband wanted to kick his a$$ when I told him...I almost went up to him at the end of the race to tell him he was a jerk and that he should be more compassionate but I didnt!....AND even BETTER was I won 2nd place and when I went up to get the medal, I noticed his face - his eyes were opened rather wide!! and all his buddies was wondering why I was glaring at him as I went back to my friends....i laugh about it now...but I just want you to know there are all kinds out there and on the whole MOST triathletes do not act this way...there are a handful that do.

Every tri I've done there have been riders on everything from '70's 10 speeds to mountain bikes to hybrids to Huffys to multi $1000 tri bikes. I have never heard a bad word said about it. Obviously, Julee has, but I think that's the exception. And remember, it's not the bike, it's the engine that matters most.

Hi everyone.  We had beautiful weather today - sunny and all the way up to 50.   I got out for my longest run in probably 5 or 6 years.  It was only about 5 miles, but that is great progress for me.   As of the end of Feb, I have now run further than I did all of last year.

Have a great weekend everyone!

And don't forget that Cheri is racing on Sunday..... Go Cheri!!

Got myself to the pool this morning to try out the swimming tips posted here last week. I was really hoping to make a lot of progress by keeping my head lower, but my times were about the same. I've got to work out the timing yet. And once I went to breathe and I was too deep under the water, and so got a noseful.

I couldn't do a whole lot of drills because the pool was crowded. But the cool thing was that the two women I was sharing the lane with were actually the same speed as I. That's the first time that's happened, so I was thrilled.

I appreciate you sharing your experience !  On a normal day dh will watch or dd while I go to spin class, or a meeting etc........ he works outside the home, I do not so he is our paycheck.  HOWEVER I am not one that feels since I bring in little income that I should have nothing. I do clean a house every couple weeks, but that is only for a bit of gear ! lol

Anyway, I jus thate that I have to continue to remind on occasion that this laughing/joking/snarky stuff is negative no matter how in jest it is meant.  I hate it........ and uncharacteristic of me, I WILL NOT TOLERATE IT !   Now if I make a joke, he is free to laugh............ but reverse that and I am instantly furious !  I put too much into this to not be taken seriously, no matter if I ever place in my AG or not, I at least have worked to get to the place where I have a chance.

So I thank you so much for understanding my irritation........and I will continue to train ! Thank you for your support !! HUGS

OH MY GOD!!

Did you guys see the Biggest Loser where one of the contestants and NBC claimed to have finished a marathon -- and he didn't?!?!?

Not cool! (and sorry for starting another thread with this, I was just shocked.)

I saw the time NBC claimed was 3:53 for a marathon, and my husband says, "wow, it takes that long to do a marathon?" and I told him that was actually a REALLY, REALLY good time.

The thing is, that contestant and/or NBC lied! He didn't run the whole thing, and the time was actually 5:53!!!

I didn't give the name in case someone doesn't want a spoiler ... but the photo proof is on the 2nd page of this thread.

Offthegrid - 2009-02-28 9:36 AM OH MY GOD!! Did you guys see the Biggest Loser where one of the contestants and NBC claimed to have finished a marathon -- and he didn't?!?!? Not cool! (and sorry for starting another thread with this, I was just shocked.) I saw the time NBC claimed was 3:53 for a marathon, and my husband says, "wow, it takes that long to do a marathon?" and I told him that was actually a REALLY, REALLY good time. The thing is, that contestant and/or NBC lied! He didn't run the whole thing, and the time was actually 5:53!!! I didn't give the name in case someone doesn't want a spoiler ... but the photo proof is on the 2nd page of this thread.

I watched it, and couldn't believe my eyes when they posted his time!  I figured it had to be a mistake.

Did you see the "triathlon" they did last year (I think it was last year)?  I was outraged -- each "event" was separate, so whoever won the final event won the triathlon.  In my opinion, the show misrepresented our sport.

Go Cheri!!

that is fantastic Dan! you ROCK! with all the running, windy bike riding, swimming and snow shoveling you have been doing...you must be getting in really REALLY good shape! KIU!!!!!!!!!!
