Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jobaxas - 2012-10-13 1:54 AM Run today - bizarre, in one house in the front yard and across the footpath - a swarm of bees - thousands and thousands - was a little scared they would make a bee line for me! But they didn't coz I crossed the road, that family would be trapped in their house. Goodness me Greeks certainly do lay on a good feast. Oooh, my beekeeper friend would have been there with a hive to scoop them up! I went with her to collect a swarm once. They are really fascinating creatures! Hope your run was good other than dodging bees! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Crazy morning. As Reece said, our weather was very wet this morning. Not just wet -- tremendous lightning storm on my way to the race. I delayed leaving, thinking they might cancel. I got there at 7:30, the time when the race was to start. Walked in to the pre-race meeting, inside, with everyone looking a little grim. The race director threatened to have us 15k people run the 5k loop three times, to keep us close to town, and off the heights (not a good place to be with lightning strikes). There wasn't exactly a rebellion, but there were two dozen very grumpy people. In the end, she decided to let us run the original route, but threatened us that she would pull us off the course if the weather turned bad. We started at 7:40. Thankfully, the weather didn't turn bad again. It was actually a beautiful morning for a run. Very humid, but 62 degrees. The sun even tried to come out at one point. It sprinkled on me for about five minutes near the end. I'm a little emotional and tired. Salty -- I ran the whole hill. I got up in a little over six minutes (half a mile), ran my little loop at the top, walked for a few seconds while I drank some water, and then flew back down the hill -- half a mile in less than 5 minutes (Thanks, Yanti). Seriously, I passed some guy as I flew down, and it really did feel like I was flying by him. My pace stayed up for the final 4 miles. ("up" by my standards) We were on paved road for the first half mile (or so), the road up and down the hill -- poorly asphalted; I actually found dirt to run on in the middle of the road -- and the last two miles. The rest of it was on Kansas sandy, dirt rural roads. Just what I love. I made my goal with 20 seconds to spare. And I wasn't DFL. Edited by KansasMom 2012-10-13 2:45 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Salt, a couple pages ago you asked about CC ski boots (I tried to find the post...but couldn't so sorry if I get this answer wrong because I couldn't find your exact question...) and I remember the work 'touring...' So, here's some info: From livestrong.com: "Performance boots are specialized for cross country skiing, particularly competing. They are lighter and not made to be walked in for any length of time. Touring boots, though, are designed to be taken off after skiing and worn as normal boots, which is essential for anyone planning to ski and camp. Select the degree of rigidity in your boot's ankle support based on the trails you plan to ski. If you ski in a track for the majority of the time, ankle support is less critical. But off-track skiing can be unpredictable, and the desolate locations can make a sprained ankle potentially deadly. In these situations, boots with heavy-duty ankle support are your best bet." (to add to this, if you're going to 'skate' you'll need a boot with alot of lateral rigidity, if you're planning on 'classic' only, that's not so important...I can't remember which technique you said you do...) "Choose any additional accessories wanted on your boots. For example, lace covers help keep snow from melting and seeping in through the tongue of your boot and into the interior. Ringlets are also installed on some boots to accommodate gaiters, which are protective covers bridging the boot and the pant leg." OK - so that's very basic. Any ski shop will totally point you in the right direction. I'm sure your athletic ability will put you into an 'advanced' catagory (or the like) though, so think about not getting the 'beginner' or 'casual' boot as you may grow out of them ability-wise very fast... ya know? I skate, so my boots are specific for that. In addition, I have custom insoles in them (and in my running shoes and cycling cleats, etc - all separate pairs) and totally recommend them (for your ski boots and running shoes and cycling cleats, etc) not only for performance, but to help prevent injury. I could go on and on about insoles...thats for another post though! I'll do a better job of getting back to you faster if you have any more questions - and I'll answer your specific questions - sorry if I totally missed the mark here! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just watched Jackie from my Masters Swim come across the line in 12:15:xx. So cool to watch someone you know My 10km tonight was great. My nephew did a great job. But, equally impressive was my SIL. They ran an 8km 2 weeks ago, with walk breaks. That was the furthest she had done. Tonight, she ran the entire 10k! So proud of both of them. I'll get a RR up later. Best of all--it POURED rain earlier today. It POURED rain on the way home. But the entire race, it was dry! Weather angels were watching over us! |
