Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed @Joe, that is phenomenal! Glad to know that some fitness was retained. I hope the progression continues well. The other day I was offered some weird shoes (and I read an article about them in Slowtwitch) so I tried them out for one run. The approach is very radical, the shoes are extremely tall but surprinsingly light (only 10oz) and they SCREAM speed when you start running although you feel you're stepping on a pillow. The shoes are Hoka One One (pronounced o-nay), the model is the Bondi S2. I decided to give them a try since I've been having some discomfort on my right foot. |

Travel and meetings all day yesterday. No real desire to run let alone do a hard run. Convinced myself something is better than nothing and I should at least run a few miles easy. Once I got going I kept doing a bit more until I got the workout done. Mitch - Swim - 5 / Bike - 13 / Run - 18 / Rest - 3 / Total 36 / Time - 28:31:44 Edited by dangremond 2013-02-21 6:10 AM |

Not me, but my wife went to one that was sponsored by the local tri-club. He did wonders for her. Having said that, he follows ART principles and is very familiar with sports injuries. He also works within a orthopedic surgein office, so he has a full physical therapy gym available for his patients.I would look for someone like that, a chiro+sports medicine. Here is his webiste, so you can gave an idea what to look for. http://healthfitchiro.com/ |

Will try to run tonite. The Hokas Coach E mentioned are popular among some ultra runners. You can find some discussion about them in the Ultra threads here if you want more anecdotal info. |

Jackie, do you have a bib# and is there a way to track you for your upcoming marathon? We are excited and totally rooting for you! Question for the group, how often do you get medical checkups? I had gotten one 4 years ago when I turned 40 and then neglected them assuming I was fine, until today. I had a few wake-up calls from friends in the last 2 weeks starting with a friend who I rode bike with, and was a couple years older, who died all of a sudden of a massive heart attack while working out at the velodrome two weeks ago. Then another friend was diagnosed with cancer also a couple of weeks ago. Finally another friend died two days ago also unexpectedly from complications with her pancreas. They all seemed to be in good shape, but I guess you never really know. So today I went for a thorough medical checkup and am waiting for the results, but was told my pulse and HR are doing great :-)

Annual visit with Internal Medicine Doc and annual visit with Urologist. No EKGs or anything. Thinking of asking for one this time. |

Master 1780 Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Coach E and gang, as I start my tri season, I am trying to figure out my training schedule. Last year I did a 2x balanced week. This season I joined a gym, which allows me to swim at noon, and frees two mornings for an additional run and bike ride. So my week will be 2S (maybe a 3rd), 3B, 3R. I am trying to figure out what to do for each session. BTW, I am focusing on Oly distances, with my B race in June 1 and my A race end of September (with a few sprints and maybe another Oly thrown in there for good measure. My first race is a sprint mid april). For the sake of brevity I will tackle running first: 3 sessions a week (2 short/1 long). I want to take advantage of my running fitness after the HM. 1) if my 2 short runs are in the 4-5 mile range, what do you recommend my long run to be? Last year I capped it at 8. Is that enough long distance for Olys? Should I start there and add more as the year progresses? 2) I enjoyed the HM training with a few runs at pace or at pace +1. Kept training entertaining. I would also like to add speed training this year. What should I do with my 3 runs? Start at MAF and add speed training closer to my A race? Following the "easy most of the time, hard some of the time", how often you do the hard runs? 3) Can you suggest a "beginners" speed workout that does not require a track? Something simple that I can program in my Garmin would be great. Or at this stage, would just run at pace once a week do the trick? thanks. Once I figure out the running part, i will tackle the bike training. |

Good question Gabe, thanks for asking. 2 years ago was my last visit. ECG, general check up and the works. I had some inflammation and didn't feel good, on top of that my heart was occasionally beating irregularly which kind of scared me. I don't do it regularly though, have limited faith in general check ups, even if there's something wrong, the advice is: excercise more, eat healthy, more veggies and limit drinking. For a non drinking vegetarian who regularly works out more than they could imagine, this is of limited use. On the other hand, nothing can stop us from aging, getting sick and ultimately dying. Here, check ups for melanoma are probably the most useful ones. |
