Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Hmmm Ice bath. First fill the tub with cold water... add ice cubes. Then get several cold beers, sit in front of tv and wait for ice to melt. Once melted let out water and finish with a nice glass of wine. |

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL I've done the ice bath a couple times with positive results. The method I've found most bearable is to fill the tub w/ cold water, get in and then add the ice. Cooling the water while you're in it makes the adjustment easier - and apparently it's entertaining for the person adding the ice. I usually wear a sweatshirt to help stay warm. From what I've read, the water only needs to be <60* to be beneficial. |

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL I ordered up a Garmin 305 today. I was wanting the 405, but the deal on costco.com was too good to pass up. It will really come in handy for trail running where you can't map the route easily to figure out distance, etc (at least that's how I justified it to myself). The people I've been running with all have the 305 and it does a good job tracking in the woods too. Gotta love new toys, too bad the deal was only on-line and I have to wait for them to ship it. |

I bought the same thing!! Gotta love Costco. It is the type of store that I feel proud if I come out of there having spent under $300! How can we spend that much on T.P.? Didn't get to do much training this week, but what I did was very encouraging. I've finally reached the point where I have a 5K and a 10K speed. There really is a difference! I can push a 5K at 9:50, a 10K at 10:30, and I just did 8 miles at 11min/miles! |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL We got snow last night. It's almost all gone now but it is cold here. This was the time last year when I stopped trainng as I didn't belong to a club and didn't want to do any training in the cold weather. THenkfully I have the club membership to do all the training I need. THere is a personal trainer who lives two house down from me. I am going to go talk to him about training for the HIM next Sept and if it's not to expensive I will probably hook up with him. Had a good work out today. 2 mile steep up hill walk and then a 2.5K sprint in 11:55. Ramble ramble to give those Monday morning coffe drinkers something to do besides burn there mouth on hot coffee. Went out to my BIL place last night. Had few beers and really sweated them out today on the mill. We watched to Maple Oafs lose yet another game. It weird how they are losing just as many games this year as last but they look better. It's probably all the new young guys struggling to get the feal of the NHL. If they would just stop giving the other team a 3 or 4 point spot before they started to play they would probably win lots more games. |

Back to training today, just doing my own plan for the next 2 weeks until my 1/2 marathon plan starts in Dec. Planning on running either a 5k or 5miler on Thanskgiving and a 10K with a bunch of BT'ers in December. |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Hey guys I have a question about heart rates. I have recently started tracking mine and I've noticed two odd things. 1) my heart rate seems very high. I am regularly in the 180's and I am not exercising at that high of an exercsion rate, 2) my heart rate drops by at least 10 bpm after about 30 minutes. Do you guys find this to be true? As far at the fast heart rate I think I will probably have to go have one of those exercise/physiology endurance tests to learn what my zones are. My regular pulse is 72 but I am in pretty good aerobic shape (I thought) and I have a very low blood pressure (115/69) so I don't know what is going on. But do you guys experience the drop in heart rate as well? I know you guys aren't doctors, but maybe you've stayed at a Holiday Inn recently |

But do you guys experience the drop in heart rate as well? I know you guys aren't doctors, but maybe you've stayed at a Holiday Inn recently It does sound like you have a higher heart rate. excerpt from wikpedia (When resting, the average adult human heart beats at about 70 bpm (males) and 75 bpm (females); however, this rate varies among people and can be significantly lower in endurance athletes. I think for us athletes a resting heart rate is closer to 60 or less. My resting heart rate is 54. That does not mean you have a problem only that you may have a higher metabolism. As to your exercising rate that depends very much on your age and physical condition and how hard you are working. The younger you are and the better shape you are in the higher you should be in your heart rate range. I haven't used a heart rate monitor while training so I don't know if my heart rate would drop after a period of time. It sounds like it might be reasonable if you think about your legs muscles after coming off the bike for a run. You are tight and after some time the muscles loosen up and you can take a longer stride covering more ground with each step. Perhaps you heart is working the same way. That is my Holiday Inn take on heart rate. One last item. I know that if I was running behind you my heart rate would be higher |

The ever present question about HR... The only way to know where you are at is to get tested... VO2 test is the BEST way to know. I have a resting HR of 45, and did my last 1/2 Ironman with a HR of 176 (average)... As people get older this number may be BEYOND there max HR. THE HEART IS ESSENTIALLY a muscle, and everyone's Heart works in different ways. If your HR goes down that is a good thing. It just means that you are settling into a rythm (sp?).... That is good thing.
When training it is good to have aerobic workouts, and ANEROBIC works out. You train your mind, your body, your muscles..... A great book I read on Vaca.... RUNNING with Buffaloes. Follows the 1998 Colorado X-Country team. They are looking about 95-100 miles PER WEEK at a 5:10 pace.... INSANE... Great book, easy reading, and encourages one to get out and run... Oh yeah.... Good tan, good runs, BAD GOLF, lots of wine, and good talks w/ the folks.... |

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Yeah Vo2 max test way to go to figure out your HR zones. Steve sounds like you had a great vacation. Have a computrainer question for you, how hard is it to ride at 0% grade on a 3D course for you? In Erg. mode .2% grade I am hitting 30MPH easily and higher. In 3D mode at 0% grade 20 is about the most I can max and it is alot of work to keep it there. Asked on racermate forums and they suggested I send mine in for them to check out but would rather not deal with that if I don't have to. |

I think you can set the "Wattage" or "Power Output" higher in the ergo mode?! Tighten your resistence on the rear wheel? Do you Calibrate your Computrainer when you start? Meaning a nice 5-10 minute warmup?! Something is not right there... I have rode courses with 14% grade, and it works (sucks donkey), but works fine... This is wear I like to see the WATTAGE sky rocket! Is there a local Computrainer dealer around where you can call them, bring it in, etc...? Don't be too impatient. Mess around a little, but the main thing I would say is to CALIBRATE IT! |

Had fun working on my mtn bike last night, going out with some friends on Saturday. Anyone here a decent bike mech? I have XTR rapid-fire shifters on the bike (10 yrs old) and it shifts up great but downshifting when I get to the lower gears I have to take my hand of the bar to push the shifter. To get it to shift I have to push it further than my thumb will reach when on the bar, but when it does shift it shifts smoothly, lol. |

You can try and take some needle nose pliers and pulling your cables tighter off the deraileur (I can never spell this word! ) but I would say pay the $50-60 for a tune up.... Yeah I tried messing with the cable last night and it is tight. I figured if the cable had issues it would be tough get the rear derailluer to move from gear to gear but it actually shifts rather smoothly (just takes 2-3 inches to get the shifter to actually engage) I posted something on www.mtbr.com and someone said that the oil in the shifters can get all goopy and slip up the shifters if it sits awhile. He suggested taking off the shifter cover and spraying some WD40 in it then clean it up and put some thin oil on the parts. LoL, the bike was abused when I rode it then it set for years, I assume the tuneup would cost me quite a bit of money, I can even ride it with the shifters the way they are but would be nice if I didn't have to take my hand of the bars to downshift. Predicting a high of 39 on Saturday, might have to bring a little "nudge" to keep me warm out there. |

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Just a new cable is pretty inexpensive. I had a new rear-der cable installed on my mt. bike over the summer and it was about $10, parts and labor. The full tune up would run you more. |
