Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jillian- Good show! Carrie- Nice work on the bike. I did 80 this morning, but now I'm going to go out and ride 8.1. Just kidding. Sorry about your mishap with your leg. I hope it heals well and quickly. Anyone- I was outbid! Normally this isn't a good thing, but it was a relief for me. I think I'm going to stick with my standard helmet this year anyway. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great ride Carrie! Hope your leg is ok. Sam, I just picked up a brand new LG aero helmet off trisports for $134 and free shipping with my BT discount. I like it a lot, its comfy and feel good on my my head. It came with a drawstring bag, and I am such a dork, I have it in the bag on a high shelf in my closet so my kids don't mess with it. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Deviated from my training plan and did my first century ride yesterday. Went with Jeremy_424 and Justin_Scheele who are also doing IMLOU. Had a nice ride with wind in the face for the first 40-45 and at our backs the rest of the way. It was a good confidence builder that I can complete the distance. Had my ups and downs during the ride, but overall it was a great time. |

Nice ride. It sure is a confidence booster to finish the distance in training, at least that's how I felt last week when I did my first 112. Wind in the face is good training, too ;-) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jillian- If that's being a dork, than I am card carrying member. I would put that type of equipment in a place like that as well. Thanks for the info. I'll keep it in mind for 2012. Jeff- Good work! Cube- Jealous on a couple fronts. Wish I could do the 70.3...and I love pancakes. Wait!!! I can still have pancakes here! Bonus! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Cube, I would love to, but I'm only doing a 10 minute run, and I can't eat pancakes ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think I'll give up. I'm sure yall caught the results of IM Austria-new IM record by Vanhoenacker--sub 7:46 with IM record marathon 2:39+ I'm sorry but that's just sick fast. As for me...I don't think I can go any slower on my long rides.. I keep telling myself that my training course is hillier than Louisville. Hopefully I can pick up some speed on the big day. I'll be in Louisville next Sunday for the iamtri group swim/ride. I plan on doing full distance and make some notes. Good training next week. Doc |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like everybody is having a good training weekend. Jillian - Great job on the swim. My goal time for the swim is only 6 minutes faster then you swam but I'd be incredibly stoked with a 1:36. Today I did my 4 hour ride and 45 minute run brick. About 45 miles into the ride I felt a thunk on my helmet and then a painful sting. I just about wrecked trying to get off the edge of the road with one hand while trying to unbuckle the helmet with the other. I popped off the helmet and out fell the wasp. Now my dad developed a terribly bee allergy after he was 40 and I hadn't been stung in years so of course I was worried that I may have developed the allergy as well. I made myself paranoid that my tongue was swelling. My best friends house was 2 miles down the road so figured I could get there if I needed help. I could just see pulling up and asking him if his wife was home because I was stung by a wasp and would need mouth to mouth in a few minutes!! Anyways, I survived, the ride finished fine and the run was uneventful. Worked out to 69.18 miles biked and 5.46 miles run. Temp was in the mid 80's so it's getting a bit closer to Louisville temps. Good luck to all going to Muncie!! Peter B |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jillian - Don't feel bad, my wife and I are dorks too! We keep our aero helmets in their box on the top shelf... and we don't even have kids! We just want to make sure we don't accidentally break them. And to think, this fragile seeming thing is supposed to keep my head safe in a crash. BTW I just did my second 100 mile ride of the season last night, yet again after work and yet again finishing the ride well after dark. At least there were plenty of fireworks going off to keep me amused. I had found a nutrition strategy that was working great for me recently, but last night I had the same old problem I have always had: 3 hours into my bike rides my stomach rebels against me and refuses to take in any more fluids or nutrition (or at least a LOT less). If it was the run I would keep shoving it down until I hurl, but on the bike that would make me crash. It was pretty discouraging to run into the same old problem, but the ride was 8 minutes faster than my first "hundo" despite the problems so there was a positive side. I only need to shave off another 11 minutes to be on my target pace! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know this is late, but good swim Jillian! I'm in the same boat as far as the swim is concerned. I did a Half IM in northern Michigan last year and was actually enjoying the swim, but when I got out of the water, I was, like, "Where'd everybody go?" I was probably the 5th last swimmer out. Oh, well. As far as the aero helmet, my kids, who are older now, wanted to borrow it to make some sort of "Alien" costume from it for Halloween last year. No dice. : ) My second Oly tri's coming up this Sunday in Grand Haven. The wife and I have been doing some epic swims in the Big Water, so the Flat Water of Louisville should prove most refreshing! Tailwinds, all, Todd

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in Vail and trying to decide between two long ride options tomorrow.... on a crappy rental bike. Option 1) 72 miles 4900 feet of climb to Breckenridge and back or option 2) Copper triangle ... which is a killer climb. 5900 feet. Which one should Emily and I go for? |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, there! I lived in Colorado for 20 years and did all those passes in the vicinity you're describing. The nice thing about riding over Vail Pass and down into Copper Mountain/Frisco (which is just down the road from Breckenridge is that the bike path is very nice and you get away from highway craziness. I routinely did the Triple Bypass when I lived there. Start in Evergreen, then go over Squaw Pass, Loveland Pass, and Vail Pass, and descend down through Vail and finish in Avon. 120 miles, about a zillion climbing feet--sort of. Just my two cents, anywhere you ride in the high country is challenging but beautiful. Tailwinds, and have fun on those descents, Todd |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I went to my first Active Release Technique (A.R.T) treatement, evaluation, appointment yesterday. I gave him a great deal of information, he pushed on this, and pushed on that, on now I'm good!!! ...I wish. He wanted me to run on the treadmill, but I didn't come prepared for that. I assumed he would just be manipulating my lower leg and foot. So, I went home and ran, so that I could answer some of his questions. ...I was shooting for three miles. At half a mile I pushed the lap button on my watch because that was when I started to notice pain in my Achilles, at least more so than the very dull sensation I was dismissing when I started. ...Thirty seconds later I pushed my lap button again because the pain was becoming more pronounced. Thirty seconds-ish later, I pushed the lap button again and started walking, and turned around. ...I started walking home feeling dejected. I walked for two minutes, then started running again. It felt a little better, but not as good as when I first started, but hey, it was an improvement. ...I walked again after two minutes, because I told myself, regardless of how it feels, I'm only giving it two minutes of running at a time. ...I started running after my two minute walk was up. It hurt. I walked home. ...I ate salt water taffy, the recently made frosted pretzels my daughter had just made, and later ice cream. I still felt like crap, and then I was mad at myself for eating all that junk. My emotional eating will catch up to me someday. ...I iced...and pouted. ...This morning I got up and push mowed our lawn. It takes an hour. My Achilles felt fine until I the last 15 minutes, and then it was on fire. ...I iced...but didn't pout this time. This time I calculated how long it would take me to finish Ironman Louisville, if I swam, cycled, and transitioned the same times as I did in 2009, but then walked 15 minute miles. I came up with 14 hours, 17 minutes, and 48 seconds. This leaves me about 2.5 hours. I don't know if I can walk 26.2 miles, with each mile averaging 15 minutes or not. I need to do some walk, pace testing. So, I'll be going to the track tonight or tomorrow to check that out. Sorry about the blog-post-long post, but I felt the need to get it out there. So, I'm hangin' in there and looking on the positive side...I still think I can get in before midnight! Peace-Sam P.S. Yes, apparently I'm a head case. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, Sam! Hang in there! It sucks when like you're trying to make progress, and the pain keeps returning. So I think it's ok to wallow in that a little. I went through pretty aggressive PT about two years ago for knee and achilles pain after the XC ski racing season, too. Probably not as severe as yours, though. I've pretty much discovered that I can no longer freestyle XC ski race (skating) without putting torsional stress on my left knee. But it sounds like your swim and bike would put you into a pretty good spot if you walk it. BTW, eating frosted pretzels with your daughter is always a good thing : ) Been there, too. Tailwinds, Todd |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think you're allowed some time to wallow in this AND eat some junk. I'm sorry you're in such pain, Sam, and I hope you heal quickly.
There was a woman I saw in Hawaii last October who swam, biked and walked the entire marathon in a walking boot. She had a stress fracture. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ended up doing the ride from Vail to Brekenridge and back. 72 miles and a ton of climbing and huge descents! It was a beautiful day and a ton of fun. However.... very glad Louisville doesn't have this kind of elevation :-) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, this is not all about me, check out the website I've noted for a cool pace calculator. Ok, I did a two mile time trial today. It sounds like it would be something intense, but it was walking. I did my first mile at a pace that was deliberately relaxed, and my second mile at a steady-faster-ish pace. Results= 16:47 & 14:57. Then when I got back I plugged some numbers into one of my favorite webiste features. Go to http://www.chicagotriclub.com/pacecalc.aspx if you want to try it out. For some reason when I copied and pasted this, not all the numbers came with it. Anyway, what I did was plug in slow estimates for each discipline, as well as transitions, and I came up with a total time of 16:42, and that's is with a walking average of 20 min. miles.
