Meulen - 2012-11-05 9:12 AM Way to go Kathleen and Wesley!!  Inspiring!!   I sure hope my coach gives me the green light on my run come back for a full IM next season.  You guys are making me jealous!!!!!!

When will you find out on the running Brian?  REV3 has some nice iron distance races that won't sell out for a while if at all.  Cedar Point isn't too far from you is it?

Not sure when exactly.  Coach just says to to see how I come back in the spring.  Right now he's ruling it out, but may change his mind depending on how HIM training goes.  Cedar Point is definitely an option though!  I think it's around 6 hours from me.

bdenehy - 2012-11-05 9:26 AM Congratulations Wesley and Kathleen! Way to persevere. I'm looking forward to reading the race reports.

And Ken, right back into the fire! Did anyone sign up onsite???

I don't think that Kathleen or Wesley did as they were both looking at different IM's next year, Carla hasn't answered if she did or not.  She has done IMFL a couple of times I believe.

There wasn't a doubt once I got back in the pool that I was going to make another attempt! Tongue out  Although 2 iron distance races and 2 HIM's next year is far and away the most I have taken on so I may have a different opinion on whether it was a good idea or not by this time next year!!

No... not doing IMFL 2013... stay tuned tho!

Kathleen and Wesley - Nice Job!

Things are not back to normal yet. We still have long lines for gas and most stations have no gas. At least the supermarkets are mostly stocked and not much of an issue now.

Unfortunately another storm is set to come through the area in the next day. High winds and rain are forecast.

On bright side I started running again after taking the last few weeks off. Feels great to be out there again.

Doing an IM race has made me a total chicken-$hit.  Yesterday, at Masters, I declined to do the butterfly leg of a couple of medley sets, for fear that I might strain a shoulder.  Not that what I do counts as a "butterfly" anyway, more like a dying seal...  Today, when a co-worker told me she was coming down with something, I ran from her office like she had the plague.  Am I the only one who trains to be "iron" but in the home stretch behaves like I'm made of glass instead?

Hopefully this next storm changes courses, I know there are areas near you that this is the last thing they need right now!  Good for you on the running!

LOL, you think its bad now, wait till you throw in the taper madness the week before the race!!

A couple of years ago training for IMFL I wrecked my bike, it was probably 6 or 7 weeks out.  Laying on the pavement, I was afraid to move not wanting to find something tore up.  Turns out just a minor case of road rash, but I understand your paranoia!

Hi All!
Today was brutal!  I had a mini race report typed for posting and then my computer froze. The swim was horrble! I got very seasick and really didn't think I woud make it. I will leave out the gorey details but I spent much of the second loop holding on to Kayaks (not a great option when you are seasick) and surf boards. I also spent a good amount of time on my back trying to control the nausea. Almost everyone I spoke to had similair or worse experiences. It was really hot and humid today which made the bike tough, especially when not feeling well enough to eat or drink anything. I spent tons of time at the bike aid stations pouring water over my head to try and coool down. I could only walk the run due to how bad I was feeling but was able to keep a pretty steady pace in order to beat the clock. My legs paid the price and I can hardly stand on them (not used to walking 26 miles at a "fast clip" ) but I did make it to the finish in time. A really tough day at the office!

The IMFL swim has now taken the place of the the IMAZ swim as the most tramatic swim I have ever done.

Kathleen,

Do you wear ear plugs when you swim? I had that seasick feeling a few times after swimming in rough water.  I asked a bunch of people about it. Several people said that I may have gotten water in my ear and that can cause your equilibrium to be off. Since then I've always used ear plugs and never had an issue.

For some reason I always have a race ending injury when I taper for a race. Mind you, I've never actually had one that really ended anything but it always seams like I'm done and won't be able to race.

I'm always happy when it occurs so I can get on with my taper.Wink

Hey all.  Life is sweet.  FTP test came out at 300 watts, just 21 watts down from my 2012 peak.  Not bad with no taper and 6 weeks recovery period.   I'm also running fast for me too.  Swimming, just got back in the pool last week after time off to recharge.  All good.  Hope you are all well. What's going on with the new groups?  Are you staying together?

Adam,

I do wear ear plugs. I am prone to motion sickness and the waves/swells were bad this year. Also, I swallowed more salt water then a person probably should so that didn't help. So many people got sick (or at least a lot of those that I spoke with). Some even swore off swimming in the ocean for the rest of their lives. (I heard that numerous times).  I even said that to myself once or twice   One of my friends who was there specatating said  that they pulled people out of the water and that some people came back in shortly after the gun went off.

I hope the next storm doesn't do more damage and I am glad you were able to get back outside and run.

Haven't heard on the groups yet, but they haven't archived them yet.  I know the changes they are looking at and seeking input on is for the new version of bt coming out sometime in the near future.  Whether they follow the old pattern and archive us or just leave these open and let us continue remains to be seen.  I don't think there is anything in the current version that would prevent them from leaving these open.  Although I do beleive they have a page number limit.  I don't think we are close yet though.

Ice, I am envious of your bike power!  That is an impressive number!

Ugg, I have swallowed sea water in the past - it's not fun. Thankfully I've never had it happen in a race.

Way to finish the race though - that must have been sweet when you crossed the finish line!

MTB'ing with Miranda??????  Now that's a dream!!!

I took the day off work yesterday.  Still got my swim in.  My wife did a PAWS charity drive to collect blankets/money/toys/money/ and other pet products for the Chicago PAWS animal shelter.  We took the day yesterday to drive all the stuff we collected down to the shelter in the city.  Oh....and check out all the animals.    Thankfully, we didn't come home with any.  I think we have all we can handle right now.

You know.....us business owners aren't as bad as people make us out to be.  Heck, so far I've lost money for a year on the business, paid an employee more than ourselves, and given money time and effort the business didn't have to charity.  For thanks we are going to get higher tax rates, less deductions and health care mandates that just might force us out of business and to lay off our employee! I read your thread in COJ, and agree 100%.  I just stay away from posting in the political thread as I am passionate about some of these issues and can get carried away.  Tough to be a mentor when you get banned from the forums, plus marmadaddy is a friend and wouldn't want to put him in that position.

I don't talk a lot about what I do here, but I am a business owner and CEO of a company that employs over 250 people that has very generous (and yes, all of my employees agree with that statement) benefit program ~ 75% of health care costs covered for instance.  When the comment was made about CEO's I wanted to reach through the computer and choke him.  Am I concerned about my bottom line?  Absolutely!  If my bottom line is not a priority of mine, then I am risking the livelihood of everyone of my employees.

But, this is outside the scope of the mentor threads so....  anyone racing this weekend?Innocent

I hope the business takes off soon Brian!!!!

My family is on the opposite end - hubby works for gov't as a climate scientist.  If things had gone differently in the election I am not sure his position wouldn't be eliminated with all the climate change skeptics out there. I do feel for the business owner's though - my father in law just lost his and so close to retirement.

Now on to happier topics - I JUST BOUGHT A BIKE!!!!!!

It is a Jamis Zenith Comp.  Full carbon with 105 components and decent wheel set. I got a great price  and will get the first fit (second fit will be when I get it outside in spring) on saturday. I have been waiting 3 years for a new bike!

Question for the group - I am in need of new pedals.  The bike shop recommends the ritchey road pedals b/c of their weight at around $150.  I found some great deals on Performance for the Shimano 105 at $80 and Shimano Ultegra at $140.   I noticed the weight between the 105 and Ultegra was minimal and wasn't sure the extra $60 was worth it. And while the Ritchey's may be lighter they are also pricey.  Anyone have experience with pedals? Are there other pedals you love that I should look into?

And yes - I will definitely post pick when I get it home!

GREAT bike!!! Sweeeeet!

I have a set of 105's a set of ultegras and a set of the SPD 540's. the only difference between all three is weight. The all function exactly the same and I've got the most miles and longevity on the 540's. the cheapest of the bunch. I've ha no problems with any of them. If you have time keep an eye on Gearscan.com as they come up there cheap at times.

New bikes are always fun!!  What better motivator to get on and ride!!

I have always used the Look Keo pedals.  They have different models from the $70 range all the way up to several hundred dollars and the only difference is the weight from the different materials they are made from.  Since for me, the weight difference is more or less the choice between a couple weeks of salads vs. a couple of cheese burgers, I usually go with the lower priced ones.  I have a couple different bikes, so its nice to have them all with the same set up so I can wear the same shoes.

Enjoy the new bike Robin!!

BTW, I have had success recently using Amazon for bike accessories.  Shop around to find what you want then compare it there.  It is amazing what they are carrying and the prices are usually quite competitive.
