I am WFH today. With only having 1 vehicle that leaves Donnie with the motorcycle. We have been getting torrential downpours for the past few hours, last I read was 2" an hour. We also have flood advisories, watches, and warnings for the whole area. I'm staying put. Donnie probably couldn't have borrowed a vehicle, but on a day like today I hate to assume.

Buying a vehicle will be the bane of my existence. Donnie doesn't like to spend money, ever. So when we tried to sit down last night and look at the budget he is totally unreasonable. I spent close to $600 this past weekend on items that aren't needed monthly, like backpacks, lunch boxes, other misc school supplies, the kids both got 2 pairs of shoes for school, plus both needed soccer cleats and shin guards. I also got some clothes for both of them. I put $200 a month in the budget for stuff like that, he wanted to put $600 in. Other things that I've paid once he wants to put in as reoccurring monthly payments. NO. At the end of the day, when all my bills and expenses are paid I have plenty of money to make a car payment. I have a good job, I make my own money, I'm buying what I want. I'd prefer to do it with him, but I'll do it without him if I have to.

Silly Boys! You know of course, that when you buy what you want, it will have been HIS idea.... even if he fought like a banshee the other way.

You all stay safe with all that rain.

I am off. Have fantastic days all of you.

Finances are one of the major stress factors in relationships, along with buying a house and car.  Hang in there.

Mostly just online shopping right now. I did stop at a Ford dealership yesterday, after the kiddos orthodontist appt, to peek in the window of an escape. Keri liked it, Caleb didn't get out of the car to look. I was in a hurry so I didn't talk to anyone about it. I may go back today or tomorrow. I also may run down to MD tomorrow after work to look at a Nissan Rogue. Donnie had said about going tomorrow evening, but the dealership is half an hour from where I work. I'd hate to go all the way home, then go past where I just was to go look at it. He is going to see if he can get off work early tomorrow to go with me. I have no patience for car salesman, and they prefer to talk to the men-folk anyway, so I'd prefer he go along.

I have NO patience with car salesmen. I paid 12 dollars to consumer Reports and got prices for cars that way. You have to know the make, model and add ons you want and then they get quotes from car dealers. The best quote I got was from Greenville SC. (about an hour away). I took that to a local dealer and they met the price. period, no dicking around. I did test drive a bunch of cars and shopped around before that though and knew what I wanted. I took Jim to be a decoy for the salespeople while I drove the cars

I'll have to look at the Consumer Reports thing. I've heard of people doing something similar using Edmunds.com. My FIL would be FANTASTIC at dealing with the salesman, he will haggle anyone for anything. I would just rather not get him involved though, because then he thinks he has a say in what I do. He doesn't. I am 40 years old and I have never bought a new car. 2 of my last 3 cars were basic no frills, cars that I just wrote a check out for. I've owned 2 cars with no cup holders. So I have a list of requirements. I could probably find something used that meets my wants, but with the miles I put on a vehicle I'd rather go new.

-sun/moon roof

-cup holders

-power windows and door locks

-AWD/4WD

-dark color (black, charcoal, blue)

I don't think this is too much to ask

I spent a long time researching and reviewing cars on line. My requirements were 4 door, excellent gas mileage, station wagon, excellent reliability and AWD if I could get it. After lots of reviews it came down to comparing the VW Jetta TDI, Subaru, and the Prius V. (The Audi and Lexus were in there, but out of my price range). I went and drove those bad boys around and eliminated the Subaru (much to my dismay, the new models are not as good as my old one), then got prices on the other two through Consumer Reports.

I purchased my last two cars (only two cars) new. I know folks say not to, but I keep them like I do a dog... for their entire, long, long life. (I still have the Subaru, 220.000 plus miles and going).

Robin, I put around 25,000 miles a year on a vehicle. To buy something used, which doesn't have a warranty, but already has a ton of miles really doesn't make sense to me. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy used, but it would have to have low miles. I've been reading reviews online. I'm now leaning more towards the Escape and the CR-V than the Rogue. I'm hoping to get this all done and overwith soon. I'll let you all know how I make out.

You can't go wrong with doing your research! I know folks who like the RAV 3 (or is it RAV 4?) as well though I don't know how it stacks up for size.

I am the same way about new vs. used, I put tons of miles on my car (I am already up to 22,000 on my new one and I haven't had it a year yet. I also drive a long way from home and I do not like being broken down far away. Having done that, it is NOT fun. That is one of the reasons I don't use a state car. They are crappy and I have been on the side of the road with a broken car one too many times.

When I was doing my new budget the other night it hit me that in 3 years Caleb will be getting his driver's license. EEEK!

I made sure I put extra in savings when I was doing the budgeting. I won't buy him a car. And I won't let him buy one, but I'd like to have a third car around that he can "borrow" from us. If we own it then he has to ask for the keys, tell us where he's going, when he'll be home, all that good stuff.

It won't be a new vehicle, but something reliable. He'll be playing after school sports. Keri will be playing after school sports. He can take her to school, and bring her home after practices. WOOT!

So here's something new in the Chronicles of Ann...

I'll see if I can type this that you can follow along. My husband has a large family. His younger brother, and his family, were given a car by his MIL, when she bought a new one. They were also given a car when his wife's grandfather passed away. They already owned 2 cars. They kept the nicer of the 2, and gave the other to one of my husband's sisters.

Now my husband's sister is getting an almost new vehicle from her husband's deceased mother. They offered us the car they got from the other brother for nothing. It gets roughly 30 mpg, compared to Donnie's truck's 15 mpg. Donnie asked if I thought it would be a good idea to get it. I said YES. It saves us money on gas. It saves miles on the truck which would be nice to last us until whatever I get is paid for. And it potentially gives us a vehicle for Caleb if it is still running in 3 years. It has less than 50,000 miles on it, and just passed inspection.

Now which of the 2 older vehicles will be sitting outside the garage? Mine will be INSIDE!

How exciting!  An extra car and a new car to come!  Yeah!  I LOVE car shopping!  Mostly because I love to test drive all of them.
