Looking to develop better ham, glute and core strength primarily. That is a major weakeness for me as are hills and being able to power up them in training or races. I can do the distances, but want to make sure I can do them with proper form, injury free and faster. While I had a good bike at Muncie, it wasn't without ham or glute issues ... so hopefully this can also help launch that.

No I will not be able to do the insanity full time like the program prescribes .... way too hard, but 2-3 times per week should do the job and hit all the muscle groups, especially core.

Insanity is designed to be a total body workout with the intent of getting people into shape in a very generalized sense.  Much like Crossfit or P90 it is a jack of all trades type of workout.  It appears to me that you are using it to enhance your endurance sports performance.  This is not the intent of the program and there are programs out there that have your goals as a target.  Check out some of Ben Greenfield's stuff if you're convinced strength training is the route to go.  Plus doing "system" regiments in a way not prescribed is always a bad idea.

Honestly the best way to strengthen your muscles for hills is to go run or ride hills over and over again.  From a scientific stand point the muscle fibers you utilize to do traditional strength training or Insanity play a very small role in running or cycling.  Traditional forms of strength training utilize type IIa muscles primarily and some IIx.  These have few mitochondria and produce lactic acid very quickly.  They are very powerful and explosive.  Endurance sports utilizes primarily type I muscles with very little recruitment of type IIx.  These basically hold the opposite properties (lots of mitochondria, slower to produce lactic acid, etc).

I saw this and got a chuckle when thinking about it out of context.  I've never run a marathon, but part of me thinks that insanity is not only compatible with marathon training, it's necessary!

I'm heading up Friday morning and hope to be there around lunchtime. I'm scared silly and so excited I can't sit still. I swear its a form of torture to have to work this week. All I want to do is go home and pack and then GO. I think I have put about 4 actual focused hours in this week. The rest I am in IM world haha

I guess the first one really is a learning experience. I have SO much more to learn, I'm not ready to quit yet :-)

I think you are going to surprise yourself!!! Have a great race!!! I am looking forward to hearing about it!

I'm starting to move into IM panic mode. I have a million concerns. What was I thinking signing up for this thing? I'm seriously doubting myself.

So I have a race in two weeks. Training has been off and on at best. Just looking to enjoy it and do a little better than last year. This job searching take a lot out of you. In the mean time I got an offer to work at Starbucks It will get us some benefits at least, with the baby on the way that is the main concern! But I am looking forward to MCM training Keep on training everyone!

Hang in there. I love how generous Starbucks is with benefits (many of my artist/dancer friends....I used to be a dancer.... have benefitted) and I am glad you got hooked up.

Jen - No one is going to totally alleviate your panic ... it is totally natural for most people doing something new for the first time and something huge, which this is. You have been kicking in training! You have worked very hard for this and you are going to do great ... amazing actually! I am so excited for you.

I went into Muncie totally freaked out, headaches every day, couldn't eat the night before. Then race morning ... totally calm, just did my thing. Wasn't freaked out our doubting myself ever during the race! I had trained (even if I missed a few sessions) I was ready.

These last several weeks will be the hardest cuz each day that passes that race is one day closer ... ONE DAY CLOSER TO KICKING IT IN THE AND FINISHING! In 25 days time ... YOU WILL BECOME AN IRONMAN!

x2!

It is completely normal. As hard as it sounds, the best thing to do is try to relax as much as possible.

Deb I am excited for you too. I hope very much that the race and experience is fulfilling for you.

As a shrink I know that saying you will do fine and relax etc., may not actually help (doesn't really for me)....But Jen and Deb...you are as prepared as you will ever be at this point and I hope you can find a small piece of comfort knowing that you have a lot of people pulling for you and there lots who are feeling the same way.

Thank you all for the words of encouragement. It sounds like what I'm feeling is normal. I keep thinking of all the things I could have done better. This has been quite the roller coaster! Can't wait until this week is over and all the hay is in the barn.
