wbayek - 2011-05-01 12:51 AM I feel like I nailed my half today: 1:51:14.  The final pace is about 8:29, right where I hoped to be, but I faded badly the last few miles.  After mile 10 I was at 1:24:15, felt pretty strong, and secretly wondered if 1:50 was in range, but no way.  I wasn't sure if it was really fading or the fact that the last 3 miles were right on the coast directly into a truly evil wind.  I wasn't passed much and actually passed quite a few people even though my paces slowed to the 8:45-8:55 range.  Or maybe I just have 10 mile fitness right now!

Was that a PR for you?

Yeah, my previous best 13.1 times were in training runs!  That's the first one I haven't really screwed up.  I'm happy, but I know that I crammed my training since I missed most of Feb with the new job.  I think the lack of miles over time was what cost me those last few miles more than anything.

No won to IMCDA for you guys.  It's really not that far away.  How are you feeling about your prep?  You both look like you're killing the training to me.  Some of those bike routes are outstanding.

Training is going well so far.  My only issue is I haven't been able to get in the hills on the bike comparable to IMCDA which is my biggest concern.  I could drive a couple hours to some good hills, but with a 6-7 hr workout, it's hard to fit in 3-4 more hours of drive time and not get a red card from wifey.  So far she has supported me and I've tried to keep as much life balance as I can, but it's just a lot of time training.

I have my HIM this weekend, forecast not the best though, possible showers, hopefully it hold off until the run, but who knows.  My plan is IM prep, so I will be focusing on OWS practice (going to start at front of heat and hope someone swims over me and knocks me around some...lol), staying in IM pace/HR zones, gear, transition and nutrition testing, as though I would be going out for the full.

I upgraded to an 11-28 cassette, bought another granny gear for those hills, didn't know anything about gearing, so I did get a little education on the IMCDA thread on that.  Getting used to my Trek 7.2 and a tri aero position, but I had LBS lift the front to the top to get some additional comfort, I'll see how that feels this weekend, they also gave it a 30 day tuneup so it should be ready to go.

I can't believe IMCDA is only weeks away now!!!  Thanks for everyone's inspires and support, you all have been great, again!!

How's everyone's training going?  What do you have in store for the weekend?  Let me guess Rene, 100 mile bike ride?!!

Cheers!

Woot! Good luck Matt on your training race! It really is impressive to compare to last year as you were gearing up for the Florida HIM. Great job.

Now - for hill training - both Warren and I have that covered!

I'm now about 3.5 weeks into my HIM plan - with a hiccup this week (a sick child at home for 3 days really cramps the mid-day workout)...I'm trying to fit it all in but may have to just call mercy on a couple of workouts.

Rene - I hope the training is going well. Looks like it will be fun!

Sounds great Matt.  It really is coming up fast.  And Jennifer is right, we got your hills covered!

You're welcome to come up and spend a long weekend at the cottage and ride the hills up north with me, and get some OWS in chilly water which I also have heard about IMCdA.  We have one truly evil ride around the lake which is 64 miles and about  5500 ft of climb - 950 in the first 6.6 miles just so you're beat up from the get go!

Training is going well.  I was sick for most of April and only got in the pool once or twice in that month so I could be hurting there.   I wish I could swim as fast as Matt!! Smile

With that said, I am feeling really good and am hitting the training pretty hard.  I rode the cda course with some friends and it is hilly and has a couple of SHARP turns.  I will have to look out for those during the race.  I did 3 centuries in the last 3 weeks so that will help with my riding confidence.  We have lots of hills out here so I am getting my butt kicked.  Hoping to improve on them hills!

Hope training is going well for all of you!

You are going to rock IMCDA. I only half halfheartedly regret not being able to do the race. I really wanted to do another IM this year but just too busy.

Here's my race report from last weekend.  It went good overall, some lessons learned on preparation mostly.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=252827

Hope all is well and you guys are getting some nice spring weather up north.  It's been a nice spring here overall, cooler than usual which is nice here, means we actually had a spring rather than going right into summer.  Rained off and on, but everything is green, including my garden tomatoes, chilis and herbs!

I'd love to take you up on that offer Warren, we enjoyed the lake house rental we stayed at this past weekend and looked at some properties on Lake Anna, nothing better than being able to spend summertime at the lake, especially for kids.

Ran a couple of legs for a relay team in the Vermont City Marathon this weekend...race report here.

It was a VERY warm and humid day...having spent the last month or so training in 45 degree weather, I caved. It was a VERY fun race, and I would absolutely do it again...

I hope our IMCDA'ers are feeling good - that taper will be starting soon I imagine...hope you all are staying injury free and enjoying the ride!

That's a cool race Jenn.  I know some people who ran it last year.  The heat was so sudden this year, we were all totally unprepared.

I can't believe IMCdA is only 3 weeks out for you guys.  If you haven't seen his logs Matt has had some groin pain in the same place and the repaired hernia.  Hopefully it's nothing serious and just a hiccup.

Heat came out of nowhere out here as well and then went away. Good luck to everyone at IMCDA, hopefully the issues go away for matt.

Wow - 165 Rene!  That's sick.  You guys are ready and will rock this thing.  I really want to find a way to get online up north so I can follow it "live".

I'm signed up for my first ever 5k road race this evening.  The problem is that I've been battling some Achilles pain, and it's also in the mid-90s after a very cool spring for us.  I'm planning to get there and see how everything feels and hopefully not do too much damage.

Last night's race was a blast.  The skies opened up about an hour before the race - it was Biblical.  Thunder and lightning, hail, torrential rain, winds.  Then it all ended, the temperature dropped about 20 degrees, and it was actually fine for the race.  It was still very humid, but only about 75.

I did a nice warmup to get the Achilles loose (about 2.5 miles with some strides), and it worked.  The race itself went fine, the Achilles felt fine the entire race but was pretty sore afterwards.  I finished in 22:11, a huge PR for me.  It was definitely a flat/downhill course, though some others said with the humidity their times were not much faster than they typically run.  I didn't leave a lot on the course as I was seeing stars at the end.  I guess that's about all I have in my run fitness right now.  Overall I'm very pleased with the effort and the Achilles.  Miles were 7:20, 6:53, 6:58.  Race report here.

I got a chance to talk with the winner who came in from Chicago and was hoping to go sub 14 on a bet (his PR is 14:25), and he ran 15:14.  He was disappointed with 4:55 miles!  Oh well, it's all relative.

I had a great race yesterday.  Bettered last years times in all three sports, though the swim was definitely shorter this year.  The RD said the buoys moved last year and made it ~150 yards longer than it was supposed to be, and I think this year they set them up too short. Either that or I swam a 1:11 pace with no swim training!  Race report here.

Good luck next weekend guys.

Whoo hooo! They both made it in...I heard the water was very cold (58 at the start) and it really affected some racers.

Congratulations Rene and Matt - You are IRONMEN!
