One that she still won't fess up to. But no one else had access to my computer today. And no one else has access to the email account that she and I share. unless she only checked the email while I was gone earlier (which she has no reason to lie about) AND one of the construction guys somehow logged onto our network and surfed a bunch of adult-related websites, or she is lying to me... for a not-so-good reason. While I don't want her to go to those kinds of sources if she's curious, I sure don't like it. But I expect honesty from my kids. She should know that by now. What should I do? Ground her? Is it possible at all she's telling the truth? Sometimes when you click on a spam link it'll open up a whole bunch of adult-related websites without your meaning to. But I suppose she could have explained that it happened by accident that way. Or maybe she's lying because she's afraid you wouldn't believe that, or she's ashamed 'cause she didn't want you to find out.
Did you explain that you found the adult sites on the computer? Or just asked if she'd used the computer during the day? If you explicitly asked if she went to those sites, and she said "No"..... You could tell her that 1) You believe her because you know that she's going to be honest with you, and 2) that if she's curious about things like this, there are better places to find information that is educational (rather than pornographic). (Then, if she says she's curious, point her towards some better sources of info.) |

Sorry guys, Little Guy's Christmas Program at school...but I'm back now. OK, a little more background. My kids are not allowed to be on the computer (or internet) when my husband or myself or not home with them. My daughter, who is in the 7th grade, stayed home from school today. I had planned to run a bunch of errands, so I continued with my plans, for various reasons. When I got home from running those errands, I went to log on to the internet, and my daughter's igoogle page was open, and she was logged on. First I asked her if she had been on the computer/internet. She said no. Um, red flag. No one else uses my computer. So, I took a look at the history, which is when I saw all the sites. Most of them were you tube sites, there were well over 40 in total. Although, I didn't actually count them. At that point I checked our email account. She had been in it, I am sure. There were emails that had been opened that were unread the last time I was logged on, and she has not been on my computer since then (supposedly). Also, in the sent folder, I saw that she had forwarded one of the emails to about 10 of her friends. The date/time stamp was for this afternoon, while I was gone. So, I pulled her in the other room, away from her brother and cousin, and told her I needed the truth---did she get on the computer while she was home today. She said no. I asked if she was sure, her google was up...we continued with me giving all of the above bits of info, her denying at every turn. I have outright told her I think she was on the internet, and I also told her that if she is curious, I would like to show her better information, or show her where to get good info. And tonight I told her that I would not be mad if she did look at those sites, even on purpose, i just don't want to be lied to. I told her we would still talk about this, and asked if she was ready to talk about it. she said no (I'm seeing a theme here...), so I told her we would be talking about it sometime before the end of the day Saturday, or sooner if she was ready. I don't think I'm ready for this teenager stuff. Grrr. Oh, and the construction guys I mentioned are building houses across the street. My daughter was the only one with access to the house, and the computer. It's the wireless network that I'm not so sure is as secure as it should be.) Thanks for listening to my rant. Bless you if you made it through the whole thing. It's too bad my hubby isn't here to share the joy of today's events with us. |

Hang in there - having no experience from teenagers (apart from having been one myself) I cant offer any advice but you seem to be handling it really well. Sounds like based on the evidence (email being sent to her friends while you were out of the house) its a pretty safe assumption you are making.. Best of luck with everything!
