My pool was closed today cause of lightning.  Sigh....I did spend some time talking to Bill....think I may scrounge up the cash to pay for a few private lessons.  He is one who knows that if a swimmer "isn't getting it" that he has to change the approach.

At least you have a legitimate excuse for skipping your swim.  I just overslept due to a poor night of sleeping.  On the bike trainer tonight, however.

I think I would rather have more thirty-minute private sessions than fewer one-hour sessions.  Take the thirty-minute session and then spend a week practicing and then go back for another to see how well you assimilated it.

His thought was that we could spend a good bit of time getting the correct move into muscle memory so I can replicate it better on my own time.  I have today as a vacation day cause I need to run errands with Thing 1. I did another brick and it felt a lot better today.

Tonight I will be running and trying out the HEED Orange Mandarin flavor as part of my nutrition experimentation. Then I will be signing up for the Master's swim at my gym; right now I'm just debating if I should go with 1x/week to see what she can help me with or fork up the dough for 2x/week because I need the help. I think just the 1x/week and if it's helping then up it to 2x/week.

I have a group private swim lesson Sunday with a friend that teaches so my gaggle of girls from work are getting together for the lesson. Hopefully I'll learn more.

Checked out the local tri-club last night. They held a meeting and showed a short movie on nutrition from Hammer. Not bad, need to find that equation of how many calories/carb grams per body weight to start calculating how much I'll need. One positive note. Met a woman there that did the Eagleman HIM last year. She's a little older than me but maybe about my size...she missed the cut off by 6 minutes but she did cross the finish line and receive her medal. They just didnt give her a final time with the run. She made me feel better about attempting it and she said the headwinds on the bike are strong and there is no shade on the run.

I'm exhausted....been a couple of extremely stressful days for me at work which has increased my fatigue factor. I need to make sure I get to bed earlier this week to rest up and not over do it.

It's not much but I got a 6 mile ride in on the Expresso trainer at my new gym and a 300 yard swim this morning. The swim would have been longer but I didn't have my goggles. I'm going to try and run some tonight to get ready for Sat.

Hey all,

Scott keep hammering away in little chunks you'll get there! September is totally doable!

I went to my first tri club meeting last night. Started with a clinic lead by 13x ironman and physical therapist focusing on self-care for keeping your upper body strong for cycling. Went through four stations of exercises including seated posture stretch + cervical flexion (imagine a kind of head sit-up) which are good for your neck muscles, particularly the front ones which can become weak in aero due to muscle imbalances. 2 parts of a "snow angel" stretch which targets your pecs (i really needed this one). Good old side and prone planks. And, upper back recurve stretch which was awesome for me as it gave me an immediate spine adjustment -AHHHHH - app my back needed some recurving badly! This transitioned into a general meeting - WOAH there were a ton of people there - which was bad as it was hard to meet & talk with ppl, but good to see so many folx. Also the doc gave another talk on bike fit - when to get a pro fit, what signs to look for etc. Less interesting to me as Ive been through pro fits and know their value. Seems like a great group, will have to go to some of their weekly workouts and actually meet some people! It was only $34 to join, so I went ahead as they get great discounts from local outfitters, rudy project gear, and massage/pt places - and they have cool race kits!

In other news - a couple months ago I signed up for a bicycle framebuilding class only to be put on a wait list til next year - or wait til November and travel to way southern oregon for two weeks (no!) Gah! Yesterday I received a surprise phone call - I'm in for the next class starting April 12th due to a late cancellation. YES! I've always dreamed of building my own bike from the bottom up. I'm going to be making a mixte touring frame - which will look something like this - ya know, only prettier... Then I want to build a 29er MTB. Yay yay yay. Very excited. Will post details as the bike emerges! Coy Koi Cycles is launched!

And on the training side of things all continues nicely. I just wish we were having some better weather so I could get out and ride!

Here are totals or lack of for the 2010 challenge. I guess after my half marathon I slacked off and stopped logging. It's ok I'm back now and ready to rock.

Jan

Bike- 86.58 miles
Run- 33.5 miles

Feb

Bike- 92 miles
Run- 78.83 miles

March

Bike- 78 miles
Run- 18 miles

I didn't keep track of any swimming but now that I have a good pool to swim in I will. This isn't everything I did but it's all I have logged so I will go with it.

Kiri - you never cease to amaze.  Now you're going to build your own bicycle.  I, never in a million years, had the thought of doing that.

Your tri club meeting sounds terrific.  I don't really do anything with my tri club. but the discounts have paid for my membership several times over.  And that was very interesting about the exercises for UPPER BODY bicycling fitness.  I don't think I have come across this before.  I'm going to incorporate those into my usual (very short) stretching routine.

Don't sell yourself short.  Getting in any workout is better than no workout.  You ought to see what I do every so often for a "weak peach."  I really ought to be ashamed of myself (but I'm not).

Thanks for getting me your numbers.  I will update the spreadsheet tonight and get it posted.  But now you will really have to work hard in order to catch Kiri.  That's what I am doing.  Working really hard so that I can catch Kiri.  And she simply won't stand still and let me catch her.

Leah,

Plan looks solid overall.  I like that you have identified some things that you want to take another look at such as more stretching and adding in some brick sessions.

Kiri,

Way cool that you want to build your own ride.  Awesome mechanical skills!!

I had to take my daughter to a dr appointment today.  Different office than usual....get the directions and get there over half an hour early but find the dr office has changed locations.  Get directions across town....sad but true here.....I only recognized where I was in reference to the different bike shops we were near.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.  And do let Scott know the secret of your success.  He is confused about which direction he is supposed to be going.

Okay, taking a vote.

5k on April 25th.

What say you? Should I do it as a time-trial/lactate test update? Seems like just a waste of $30.00 but it's really close by in a neighborhood I used to live in and the logo is a cool little Running Raven, and I have a thing for crows.

http://www.fleetfeetchicago.com/htm/events_races_ravens.asp

(keeping in mind the only running race I've done is that 15k this past fall)

Nobody who is considering doing a HIM or even an IM is crazy, but your crazy if your considering about doing it, and your not going to put forth the effort to complete one. I'm sure you won't have a problem with that though, because you seem dedicated when it comes to you training. I know that right now I can't do a HIM, but I really think that I'm going to make it a goal, and just keep training until I can do one. Everyone who is capable of training for a HIM or IM, is never crazy to consider doing one. Just make it a long term goal, and you will be crossing the finish line in your HIM before you know it.

What does your training program call for running that weekend?  I personally like doing races as calibration for my training.  I also like doing "neighborhood" races.  They have a completely different feel than these mega-races.

My only reservation for you is that your IM is in what, six months, and you might need to stay focused on your IM program.  Six months just isn't that long when you are considering what we are asking our bodies to do.

Good luck to you in your training and I know you are right.  If we all just put in the training time and effort, we can do our HIMs and IMs.

My forst year in tris I went to a seminar at a local gym that caters to the trigirls group.  The speaker said this: " If you can do a sprint, you can do an oly, you can do a HIM and you can do an IM"    Vasically ....it's not impossible if you can do one you can do more ....if you train smart and follow the plan.
