Updates. Taper time is going okay. I've had a shin splint troubling me since Monday, but its almost gone now. I'm pretty sure i got it from kicking in the pool with fins on. While they help me get across the pool, i dont think i have enough strength and flexibility in my ankles to use them, so they are being retired for a while.

Dropped off my bike for transport last night. Since i dont have another that's working, my next few bike sessions will be at the gym (ugh). Makes me very jealous of Robin :-). One of the problems I'm having with the reduced volume is that I cant seem to curb my eating from the high volume days. And I've gone back to a couple of drinks at night instead of just one. If I'm not more careful, I'll show up fat and hungover on race morning :-)

I think i have my effort pacing dialed in for the IMAZ. I'm not thrilled about the power i can realistically hope to put out for 112 miles, but it is what it is at this point. Now I'm getting jealous of Scott :-). If i was a betting man (and I am) i would set the over/under line at 12:50. Of course there is a very tight band of time that i could hope to go under and limitless time that I could go OVER if I'm walking that run. Finishing and getting one of those transition bags for swag will remain the focus...

Nice bike Robin! Have fun training on it for Florida. I'm curious about what your thoughts on acclimation are. I use the shimano 105s. They are my first and only pair of clipless. As was already said, they work great and are solid, but comparatively heavy. If i had to buy new pedals I think i would personally go lighter with the shimano carbon (5700? 6700? I cant remember). I saw some deals on them on Amazon and at an online swim store, of all places. I think all the swim gear sites are trying to break into the tri market so have some good deals too. But i didnt like the deals enough to trade in a perfectly good set of pedals.

Now on to happier topics - I JUST BOUGHT A BIKE!!!!!!

It is a Jamis Zenith Comp.  Full carbon with 105 components and decent wheel set. I got a great price  and will get the first fit (second fit will be when I get it outside in spring) on saturday. I have been waiting 3 years for a new bike!

Question for the group - I am in need of new pedals.  The bike shop recommends the ritchey road pedals b/c of their weight at around $150.  I found some great deals on Performance for the Shimano 105 at $80 and Shimano Ultegra at $140.   I noticed the weight between the 105 and Ultegra was minimal and wasn't sure the extra $60 was worth it. And while the Ritchey's may be lighter they are also pricey.  Anyone have experience with pedals? Are there other pedals you love that I should look into?

And yes - I will definitely post pick when I get it home!

Robin,

I love my speedplay zero's! They can be adjusted up to 15 degrees of float. They also have great cornering clearance.

Survived but the gas problems continue down here......

Might do a 5K tomorrow I just haven't been able to focus lately. I have a lot going on with my family.

Took the first spin class of the season this morning.  It is good for me as this particular instructor tends to push the high cadence stuff which gets me nicely out of my comfort zone, which for Florida will be important.

Anyone else taking spin classes?

I have been going to spin 1-2x a week for the last month or so.  I know I should probably be on the trainer, but it is alot easier to get my HR up and keep it up in class.  So I look at it as a cardio workout.

Also have been to group weight class a few times.  It is a full body weight program with a bar and free weights.  I have really enjoyed it and am always way sore the day after.

robingray_260 - 2012-11-07 12:08 PM It's official - I am doing 70.3 FL!!!  Registered yesterday and spent the night dreaming about trying to get to the race but not being able to and another crazy dream about mtn biking with Miranda Carfrae. I hope this group stays together as I will need all the hand holding I can get!

LOL!! Usually the night mares don't start until taper!! Looking forward to meeting you!

The group will stay together, we may have to start it over, but we definitely will do that!  Just waiting to hear.

Thats great Robin! (about the race, not about the night mares).  I had a night mare the other day about dealing with waves the size of water falls and that was after I did the race!Wink

Bill, I am so excited for you!  What is your race number?  Yeah, the transition bags are really nice! Are you wearing a gps from myathletelive.com for the race?  If you have any last minute questions about the race or venue, feel free to contact me here or through FB.  I received very good advice about my races and one thing in particular stood out which was to enjoy the finish line. If you race through it, it goes by so fast and you won't necessarily remember it. High five the fans (believe me, they love it) soak it in and liston for Mike Riley calling you an Ironman. I didn't have to worry about missing it as I was walking anyway and he stopped me in the shoot to get the spectators going.  He has to do some intertaining while waiting for the final finishers.. they don't come in in groups like at earlier hours.  BEST OF LUCK!

Thanks Kathleen. Yes, I'm carrying a trackmyathletelive gps. My bib is 1593.

I do have a couple of questions. How Mandatory is the mandatory pre race meeting they do on Friday evening? This is a family vacation as well as a race (perhaps a mistake...) so I dont have time for too much pre-race hoopla. Plus, we are staying pretty far from the race site. I already have to get onsite on Thurday (bike and packet pickup) and Saturday (gear drop off and hopefully a practice swim).

Also, for any of you with waterproof GPS watches- do you wear them on races? I usually leave my garmin on the bike and wear the quick release wrist strap for the run under my wetsuit sleeve. On a race this long i thought i might want to know how time was moving while swimming. But with the actual device on, it would have to go OVER the wetsuit, probably not helping drag in the water. Any thoughts?

Anyone else taking spin classes?

As it turns out I may be teaching spin soon.  The cycling program director at the LTF asked if she could keep me on payroll over the winter and put me on the spin class rotation.  I think I need to go to a certification class first so not sure when I'l be starting.

Couple other things from the weekend:

OMG the wind was incredible this weekend!!!  Saturday I got caught out in the cold windy rain just over the halfway point on my ride.  20+ miles from my end point, just had to grin and bare it, as my wife was not home and I had nobody really to call that could get me all the way out where I was.

Sunday was nicer, but even more windy!  Did a long out and back.  Took forever getting out averaging around 14-15mph.  On the way back we averaged over 20mph and there were long stretches at 30+mph where my HR wasn't even cracking 135!!  Very erie with the wind as you hear the faint howls and feel like you're in a vacuum!

Got my first flat on the road.....ever!  All the riding I do I'm shocked it took so long.  I think something got stuck in my tire from the rain the day before.  All the wheel changes and working on bikes came in handy as it was a quick 2-3 min pit stop even with never using the CO2 before.

Started some Kettlebell training this weekend.  REALLY enjoyed it!  Looking forward to working this into the training.  Very conveinient to have it in the living room ready and waiting to use at any time!

I'm REALLY liking having a coach!  My coach is an Awesome cyclist and really pushes me.  It's really nice to have him out there on the road with me.  I'm talking with the wife about going to California with him to train over the winter and maybe racing some at the Sea Otter in Monteray.  He's also entertaining the idea of doing Muncie with me.  I'm really happy I found a good coach right off the bat and a great training partner too!

Things are going well here, although it's about to get burrrrr cold!!  Taking it more and more inside now.  If I could just get this darn PF to quit agonizing me I'd be perfect! and on track for a great 2013.  Alas! we all have to deal with something! LOL

Hope you all are doing well?  Looks like we got new bikes, great race results and fun planning going on in the group!  We are all blessed!

I wear my 910xt in races.  Never had a problem.  I wear it when I swim all the time, so if there is extra drag, I'm sure it minimal!, it's baked into my pacing anyway.  Haven't ever had a problem getting the wetsuit off over it.  It's no different than the timing chip really, only easier since it's on your arm and not your foot.

They do not take attendance at the meeting so no worries there.  They do cover some rules that are unique to WTC, but nothing unusual I guess.  There are some inspirational presentations that are nice though.

I use my 910, and prior to my 310, for all of the race.  Sometimes I even manage to hit the right buttons to get good information!  The other factor is battery life.  I haven't done a full since I bought the 910 but it is supposed to last long enough.  The 310 was marginal so I didn't start it until the bike.

Looking forward to tracking you Bill!!

I do exactly the same thing.  I leave the Garmin on the bike and take it off for the run.  I wear my regular sports watch for the swim( so I can see my time) and bike and then grab my quick release wrist strap for the run.  I move my watch to my right wrist (or put it in my tri top pocket) and put the garmin on while running.   What I didn't do this year was make sure that my auto pause was disabled on my Garmin.  I thought  auto multisport would override that but it didn't.

Just a tip on the GPS.  They are secured by a little pouch with a velco top. Make sure that top is secure. I would recommend putting tape around it.  I did that this year after losing it last year.

On a race this long i thought i might want to know how time was moving while swimming. But with the actual device on, it would have to go OVER the wetsuit, probably not helping drag in the water. Any thoughts?

Auto pause!  Darnit!! that must be my problem.  I'm REALLY bummed I don't have my data from Racine.  I'd like my coach to take a look so we have a better picture of how to plan HIM's next season.

Hey Iceman, do you a solid Kettlebell routine for triathletes you might want to share?   I have one 20lbs Kettlebell now, but could pick up another if it's worth it for a good routine.

I was wondering the same thing.

Do they have the class where you lead the ride from?

I had a great ride on a borrowed bike yesterday riding what appears to be an old rail bed.

Nope, Lifetime Fitness doesn't have any Kettlebell classes as of yet.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will, but most classes are an hour long.  I haven't been doing kettlebell very long but I couldn't imagine doing it for an hour.  I think 1/2 hour is plenty, you'd have to add in some other stuff to fill time.  It's just too intense.  Maybe as I get more into it I feel differently, but I did 20min my first time and was sore for 2 frign days!  And I usually don't get sore from anything anymore.

My coach will be giving me a routine in the next few weeks, but I'm still curious about what others are doing.  I'll share my routine as soon as I get it.

kenj - 2012-11-14 8:15 AMBill, are you in AZ yet or heading there today?

we are at newark waiting to board. I dont know if I'm more afraid if IM or flying almost 6 hrs with my troop of kiddies....

spinning - i took a few classes when i crashed my bike and had a gym closer to work. It was a great workout, but fitting group activities is always a bit of a hassle. I'm thinking about doing them again this winter.

Taper is fantastic! On my short runs the last week, I've been as fast as when i was 20. Of course then, i didnt know what a taper was, worked hard all day, stayed out half the night, and still managed. I guess time takes its toll, but i am happy to be out there keeping fit with tri's...

Happy Thursday gang!

Sitting here procrastinating getting my run in.  One of the benefits of being on vacation I guess!

What are the rest of you doing today?

Bill, I didn't hear of any band of young children taking over a flight from NY to AZ, so I am guessing you made it ok?
