Finally, the ol' race report is finally prepared for your reading pleasure. Grab a snack and a drink and enjoy! Oh, and I posted a video at the end, in which I show up around 6:56-6:57 with my finish, but truly the whole video is worth watching. It shows what Team Fight and the Ulman Cancer Fund are all about. And there's also a guy you may recognize in there who is a cancer survivor who did very well in the half distance race

Oh yeah, sooo my cousin and I toured the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility this weekend. 149 mills and 2 solar arrays. We got to go inside one of the turbines (and unfortunately were not allowed to actually scale the 221 foot ladder, even after bribes.)

Also, all the trails around the property are open for running, too. Which is pretty cool. Well, ok, most people use them to bike or horseback ride but of course I have one train of thought.

Cool.  My SO and I went on a road trip around WA/northern OR last summer and saw an amazing amount/display of turbines.  I couldn't believe how many there were.  Didn't get a tour, though, that would have been cool.

Good morning Manatees,

I heard about that 127,000 feet skydive, haven't watched the youtube yet, sounds pretty wild.   I wonder what the total cost of that jump was.  I heard the thickness of that balloon was 10 times thinner than a zip-loc bag.

So as one Manatee (who shall be nameless) noticed, I didn't quite make 20 miles yesterday.  There were 20-30 mph winds yesterday so I rerouted my course to go through the paved trails between treelines which brought me back home at around 18.3 miles.  So then I thought, run another 0.8 then go back home, or call it a day.  I called it a day, my pace was a little quicker than I wanted.  I figure with this silly abbreviated 7 week Mary plan those 1.6 miles aren't going to make a huge difference.  It was my longest run of the year by 5 miles.

I'm already over last months total miles and it's only the 15th!  Silly....YES, Risky....YES

We'll find out what I'm made of over the next month.

They say listen to your body and currently I hear "all is good" but I know some of these running injuries just kind of sneak up on you.  Today is cross training day, I'd like to go to spin class after work but maybe I should leave the legs alone and swim, do some pulls etc.  Whaddya think?  Or maybe just rest altogether.  Next Sunday is only 12 miles for long run so this week I'll be running 3-6 miles per day.

Wise to keep it short. On a short plan, though, med and long runs should be considerably under pace. Not under race pace. Under normal training pace. Swim is fine. Easy at-home trainer spinny would be fine too. Indoor cycling class, not so much.

Mel, I just skimmed so far (I am at work, and will read more thoroughly later), but wanted to say that you got 1st in my book.  Anytime you put people before placement you deserve huge kudos.  Congratulations!

Running/biking on a wind farm would be sooooo cool! I'm still forcing myself to maintain my 3 weeks off between the OLY and my HIM training kickoff. It feels so weird not to train every day! When we were in Moab it was a little less weird because we were on vacation doing vacation-y things but now that I'm back home, with my bike just staring at me ...

I was reading a blog from one of the guys doing the 30 in 30 challenge over in TT. He was talking about how much his running has improved after a month of that kind of consistency. I've been thinking about trying to fit more short runs in to my HIM schedule but I am also trying to fit in two days/week of core/strength training! There just are not enough hours in the day/days in the week for this! Currently my schedule looks something like this:Mon-S/R, Tue- B/R (brick), Wed-S, Th-B, Fri-S/R, Sat-Long bike, Sun-Long run. I think I'll try to fit the strenghth on T and Th. I'm not seeing another run fit in there. Just rambling.

Off to read more RRs

Oh, but there's usually scrumptious piglets in indoor cycling class ....I just won't hammer it.  Yeah, swimming's probably my best bet, whish more piglets would get in the darn pool Cry

heh heh heh yes just givin' you hell. 26.2, 18, 20, 19.4 they are all just numbers. You got a long run in.

I think whatever you choose to do today, make it easy. I almost always run the day after a long run but it is, without exception, ALWAYS easy.

Strength can absolutely be found in running. Often hills and tempo runs can be considered training for "strength" it's just running specific.

Asalzwed - 2012-10-15 1:38 PM annnnd I  surpassed 2,000 miles over the weekend for 2012. I don't put too much emphasis on numbers like these but, I like to acknowledge the "milestone" Smile

Simply amazing.  So impressive!!  You are a beast!

I'm kind of an opinionated jackazz (WHAT?! Nobody noticed?) but if you're squeezed for time and training for long course, strength/core are totally skippable UNLESS you're doing them specifically because of prior injuries or conditions that were diagnosed and treated by medical professionals and it's essential you keep doing them. Core/strength is better done in sport-specific ways (as Salty pointed out for running).

That's the approach I've taken thus far. However, I was re-reading Be Iron Fit on the drive home (DH was driving) and I thought his approach to core using the balance ball, BOSU, medicine ball, etc, seemed reasonable. I've often wondered if core/strength work wouldn't help me, especially in swimming and running.

That's really tough to answer. Also, core work and strength work are quite different, or can be. Trunk stabilization exercises (I have this aversion to the word "core" since nobody can define it, but I realize few others are quite so anal about definitions) are pretty crazy awesome for your body and health in general. But S/B/R goes a long way toward helping that, especially if you're using sound form in swimming, have an awesome bike fit, and are running wisely, and it takes very little to maintain--2x week @15min.

It really comes down to your goals and what's going to help you more in reaching them. A lot of people think beyond the next race (not me, because I'm an idiot), and that is a really, really good thing.

Science schmience.

Asalzwed - 2012-10-16 1:38 AM annnnd I  surpassed 2,000 miles over the weekend for 2012. I don't put too much emphasis on numbers like these but, I like to acknowledge the "milestone" Smile

I clearly suck at basic math, but even I know that's a cross-continent's worth of miles. That's truly stunning. You're the most consistent runner I know, and I know a runner or two.

You're making me cry. That was even before I read his bio.

melbo55 - 2012-10-16 2:14 AM Finally, the ol' race report is finally prepared for your reading pleasure.

Hot damn, Melanie. You are every kind of awesome. Back to your RR now to comment further.

Wow Melanie. Your kindness and selflessness are what we should all be trying to be. I agree completely, you are every kind of awesome.

Our game went pretty well last night, especially for being short-handed.  We lost 3-2; the other team had 38 shots, my team had 19, and the hockey gods were definitely looking out for me at least twice when it seemed like the puck was going in the net but somehow didn't.  Whew!!  This season we have a new coach and it seems what he has been working with us at practice is working.  The attitude started and stayed positive last night (some of the girls get a bit of a defeatist attitude in low numbers games) which I feel was one of the biggest reasons we did well.  That and the grit of some of the girls who got mega ice time to help some of the other girls get a break.

Yanti - ice hockey terms for my position include: netminder, goalie, goalkeep or goalkeeper, goaler but most frequently goalie.

During the third period I was thinking of you guys and thought, 'Manatees on Ice' and set into a laughing fit.

And I didn't fall once because of my new skates, YAY!!! (I fell at least 3x because of them at practice the other night)  If I knew before how bad my old skates really were, I'd have ditched them way before now.  It is so nice having new skates!!!

You. Are. PHENOM!!!

Manatees on Ice. I'm seeing the show and hearing the music.

Hey, even I have ice skating in my training blog for the year ... a whole 10min I think ...
