Veteran 706 Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by GeauxHard So I did my first ever brick today. Was short, but it was definitely difficult to transition. Bike was an 8 mile loop, back half of the route was pretty bumpy, tried to stay in aero as much as I could. Final 2 miles or so back home was nice and flat and smooth, held 20mph+ down the stretch, traffic was moderate, although I did have a semi not move over very far and scared the hell out of me. Got off the bike, and changed into my running gear, held an ok mile pace around my neighborhood(9:45), was a tad wobbly at first, then my legs went kinda numb, not sure if this is normal... I really need to find a structured plan that meets my current abilities..anybody have experience with the custom plans on here? BRICKS! BRICKS BRICKS BRICKS! I love bricks. Honestly, I love them because I'm one of the few people who doesn't get the brick deathwish. Bricks are about having the complete and utter *knowledge* that the deathwish will go away. I'm not a huge fan of bricks though. They are very necessary, but doing them after every bike or every long bike is not necessary and can be counterproductive. I'm paraphrasing Jordan Rapp's article (which I can't find for some reason), but, essentially, bricks are about running on tired legs, and we don't need to practice running on tired legs, with bad form and cruddy mechanics. That leads to injury and problems. Do bricks so that you know what it feels like and you know you can run after the bike, but they aren't going to make you any faster. Plans
IIRC, I don't think you're planning anything major this year for racing? For sprints and even up to olympic distance, look to quality workouts instead of formal plans. Instead, I look at a few plans, figure out what the commonality is, and just write out a week or two of workouts that fit my schedule. I try to swim 3x/week, run 3-5x, and then I'm using a trainer road plan for the bike, but a lot of those workouts are getting swapped for outdoor rides now. |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Hi All! Busy week here for me, without much time to post, but I have been keeping up with workouts and reading all of your successes! First I want to thank everyone for the advice on wheels and spokes--I got my bike back from the shop and took it on two rides without problems. Since I'm leaving for Egypt for a month on Wednesday, I don't see that I'll have any problems with it before my next tri, which is the Sunday after I return! Workouts--I can't remember where I left off, so I'll just summarize. I've been swimming, biking, and running consistently. Today, I made it to workout 100 with a two hour spin class. 25% of the way there!!! Thanks BDAS--you're support and motivation have helped get me there! Here's to another great 300! Finally: shirts. I know the store is up, and I know we are ordering ourselves, but do we need to wait to know if we have enough for the lower price to order, or can we order and then if we reach the larger batch we get the lower price automatically? Long question to simply ask can I really order now? I want to get it all done before I head out. Hope everyone has a great weekend! We the daffodils are in bloom and we are headed to 67F today. I, for one, am thinking the hammock might be a little lonely after a long winter and that perhaps today I should keep it company with a nice cold beer. |

As I said before I don't think we're going to hit the magic 24 number to drop the price a little more. If you want to get the order in now then go for it. Chris (cwpeters) already placed an order too. I was only going to give people another 3 more days to get us to 24 before releasing the hounds and telling them to go buy what they want. |

Got to go back a few pages of posts and order one! The surgeon/doctors finally cleared me for travel and is comfortable with my pacing on activity/exercise...eye is healing up. So we came to Idaho for a few weeks...a long delayed vacation that was SUPPOSED to be a ski/dogsledding month in Jan/Feb...but that just wasn't in the cards I guess. I'd hoped to do a little skiing but spring has sprung. Good news is that I've done several runs and am up to a 5K (and we're at 5000 feet elevation so its a workout)...but the huge news is I got on a bike today and did 12 miles. My depth perception is still off...well, I guess it probably always will be, it's just a matter of getting used to it and readjusting...so I was nervous, but I did 12 miles with elevation gain and hills on a mountain bike, in an hour....slower than I was last summer, but not a lot. I'm pretty thrilled, and it was a big confidence boost to be able to do it...alone, too. I'm starting to feel like it's safe to set training goals and plans, so intend to do so a lot more over the coming few weeks. Just going to start with biking and running, I think for now, and move into swimming next month. Will catch up on everyone's posts and the shirt order tonight! Sandi |

I'm hoping to be able to at least attempt a local HIM distance race this November, with some sprints and olys in between if possible. Planning my first race for May 31st, a super sprint. I've been looking around at training plans and taking bits and pieces from each..looking into building my own plan that incorporates a 5k running plan as well to slowly build my running, although I'm sure my swimming will outpace the recommended plan right away.. Might have to just adjust it accordingly...how do you guys work in weight training(if at all) with everything else? In other news, the s32 is OFFICALLY mine! Going to be ordering a trainer here very soon, anybody have experience with repairs on Cycleops trainers? The guy who sold me the bike has a fluid 2 that is missing the lockig skewer..told me he would sell it to me really cheap if I could get it fixed... |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Check-in: Workout 7 for the week was 1200 in the pool. I keep changing things up to keep my brain interested. Today I was doing 100s with 12 breaths in between. I threw the buoy in for 2 of the 100s when it felt like I was losing my stroke. In the end I was just kick turning for the fun of it. Gotta make it fun right? I'm still not in the "looking forward to the swim" mode yet. I've gotten there with running. I'm still faking it with the swim. Challenge I keep forgetting to do the plank challenge, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to accept a CLP on that one. I could start up doing it now where i left off, but there's too many days that I've skipped in order for me to count it. This is yet another example of how I'm a creature of habit. I guess I never inserted the plank into my normal workout routine. |

20 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business So....I've been away/sick/lazy for a couple of weeks, but now I'm ready get back into the swing of things. First off: a big yea on the shirts for me. Definitely one, possibly two, or even two jerseys and one tri-top. Now, after eating everything in sight (and then some) for the last two weeks while sick, it's time to start logging again on MFP and get my proverbial bowel movements together and drop this last 10 pounds. I said screw the lungs today and turned my normal six mile bike commute into 22, and it felt great-ish. We'll see how the swim feels in the morning on the way home. Hopefully I'll have enough of the butter out of my lungs by Tuesday to resume running. The weather has been mocking me and my seemingly endless illness (say that 3 times fast) with temps near 70 and crystal clear skies, and I don't know how much more of it I can take. On the plus side, it has given me an excuse not to clean up my yard just yet . |

I also passed a few people on the MUP which was a minor miracle. And ugh this is the spring that will not come. It was below freezing for my run this morning. Expert 4269 | Subject: ! Hi Everyone! It was crazy today at the pool. It's Sunday so half of the pool was dedicated to free swim, which left only 3 lanes for swimming. Unfortunately - 2 of them were taken up by lessons. So, all the swimmers were in one lane. At one point - there was 8 people in the same lane! it was insane. After about 20 lengths - I decided to see if I could get into one of the lesson lanes and luckily one of the teachers let me in! I need to remember to get my swims in early so I can avoid this next week! A mojo update... I'm still struggling to connect all the dots. My eating is off and I'm still having to push myself to get my workouts in. On the way to the pool today I listened to my favorite youtube video to get myself psyched up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmkNKEHC8Pg). Last season, this video was my mantra. I memorized it and recited it to myself before every workout and would say it to myself when things got tough during my long workouts. I love it because it captures that battle between mind and body. Last year - I had to convince myself that I could do it. This year - I guess the challenge is to convince myself to do it. Speaking of doing it - I just signed up for my first race. The Season Opener in Hopkington. It's on Mothers Day - 7 weeks away. With ice still covering the reservoir - it's going to be COLD! Maybe some of you florida guys could send some good weather our way. Onward! |

Have you tried doing something different? I'm talking anything active that you normally don't do. Indoor soccer? Rock climbing/wall? Pickup game of basketball? Hiking? The best part of being fit enough for triathlon is being able to go do anything you want. Reward yourself with some FUN physical activity. |
