Regarding ear plugs, I recommend Doc's Pro Plugs or the moldable silicon type.

I used to suffer from VERY frequent ear infections while whitewater kayaking or swimming, so I went with the custom molded ear plugs.  You have to go to an audiologist or ENT specialist, and they will set you back aound $75, but well worth the money.  I wear them each time in the pool or OWS and haven't had an infection since.

Any suggestions on ear plug type?  I definitely don't have experience swimming in cold water, and won't be able to until a couple days before the race.

I use ones that are very similar to these http://trisports.com/macksearplugs.html You do not have to order online.  I can generally find them at Walgreens or a similar drugstore.  You can mold them to completely seal water from getting in your ears.  Plus they are cheap and you don't have to worry about them getting lost in T1.

I agree with T - 2007 it was crazy choppy and windy and they actually gave people the option of doing a duathlon. Which about 75 people opted to do. It was CRAZY but I survived. The temp was about 63-64 and I wore a sleeveless.

2008 was calm and flat - temp was 59. I wore booties, 2 caps, and bought a full sleeved suit and still I couldn't close my fingers to cup the water by the end of lap 2. I swore I couldn't imagine worse conditions than 2007 and then we got ice cold water.

My hope for 2011 is 63 and calm

Also to "practice" for the mass start clobbering I lined up at the front of every open water swim I did even though I'm a slow swimmer. This allowed me to experience getting aggressively swum over by the pack and develop good defensive swim skills IM was no worse than the Clydes at my local Olympic.

Us clydes just need a little more elbow room, thats why it gets rough out there.  Other then the down hills, it's the only other time we have a little advantage over them "skinny people."  A little water polo practice can also get ya ready for the open water swim.

All joking aside, I'm just hoping for a little open water to calm the nerves before I run into or get caught by the next pack.

See ya all in less then 3 months.

No, no! You Clydes are great for us on our 48cm frames and 650 wheels to legally draft behind!

good work you guys!

March's totals:
Bike:34h 31m 19s  - 733.44 Mi
Run:23h 48m 56s  - 181.42 Mi
Swim:11h 24m 30s  - 34150 Yd
Strength:2h 20m

Would've liked a few more miles/yards, but who wouldn't? I hit the goals generally that I set forth for March. Hope you had a good month too. My body is holding up nicely and fitness is coming along. The volume doesn't speak to the quality either. Shanks has been throwing a fair bit of that my way too.

March's totals:

Bike:42h 14m 56s  - 439.2 Mi  (about 11 of these are on a trainer, no distance estimated)
Run:11h 57m 45s  - 79.87 Mi
Swim:10h 25m  - 28250 Yd
Strength:15m
Stretching:15m

I have computrainer class tonight, so add another hour to the bike.  Didn't end up too shabby on the bike and swim, but my run was light.  I spent two weeks at reduced volume because I was worried my stress reaction was acting up again.  After seeing a sports med doctor and a physical therapist, I've determined the only thing actually acting up is my imagination   So volume there has gone back up.

I'd like to throw a random question out there:  I'm doing my first century ride next Sunday and am trying to determine how far I should ride this weekend.  I did 80ish last weekend, so should I stay in that range?  Should I do a shorter ride as a pseudo-taper for it?  If I were running a race next weekend, I'd likely do a shorter long run the weekend before.  I'm just curious if people do the same with bike rides.

Nice work everybody!  Race day is soon approaching!

March's totals:
Bike:10h 36m  - 212 Mi
Run:11h 25m 52s  - 80.97 Mi
Swim:1h 20m  - 4000 Yd

To my defense, I had alot going on and then to add insult to injury I got wicked sick last week and lost another 5 days.  All said, my run is coming along well and I did get a few long runs in.  I need ALOT more bike and if I do not get in a pool more SOON, I will really start to worry.

I did lose 5.5 pounds and within 5 pounds of my IM race weight goal, so that is good!

Mango6383: I tend to build my long bikes up bit by bit so I add a small percentage progressively (my last few rides were something like low 70s, 80, 86, 93, 100). On the bike, I like to be comfortable at a particular distance keeping nutrition/hydration the same on a per hour basis before moving up.

Honestly I do not have excuses (besides not updating my training log lol) so I will stay away from them. My thing is that, compared to IMKY last year, I am not worried about CdA. Do I respect the course and distance? Of course. Do I want to up my mileage next month? You bet, but I am tired of saying I will hit 100 mile runs or x miles on the bike and not getting there (thus disappointing myself), so I wont do it anymore.

Swim - around 35k meters
Bike - around 300 miles
Run - 80ish miles

I hear you, that is exactly where I am.  I respect the distance and course enough to know what I need to know to get the job done on race day.  I never compare myself to others because I see distances like 700+ on the bike, 200 on the run and 30k+ in the pool...in one month.  No way I will ever do that.  My goal for CdA is to train as much as I can to complete the distance, remain uninjured, employed and married.

I was chatting with a friend about that the other day.  In 2008 when I did IMLP I was single (dating my now wife, but single), had an easier job and no kids and finished in 12:42:xx.  Now, I am married, have a 21 month old son and a much more demanding career.  I truly beleive a 14 hour race in today's conditions is a bigger win... for me personally.  IM racing is about balancing priorities, if I stayed up at night worrying I did not hit 500 miles on the bike this month or 125 miles running, I would never sleep.  I keep goals and track progress because that is who I am, but if I miss a day I move on.

All that said, I truly enjoy training and racing is just the cherry on top.  I do look forward to a few nice long rides because they really just make me feel alive.  And I do need to get in the pool, because at some point, that becomes a safety issue Laughing  My only excuse on the pool... LAZY!

Happy April everybody!

See, I am where you wee back in '08. No family to take care of, and still fresh into a new career (so not too stressful....yet). I have all the time in the world to train, yet it doesn't happen as much as I would like. I would ask my coach for more mileage (and I have before) and he says pretty much to trust him. I have a strong feeling, however, that if I were to get more mileage on the training plan, I would not do it. Why? I don't really know how to answer that.

Daniel,

I think at your age what you ARE DOING is better than MOST so don't be too hard on yourself. I am 43 and trying to outrun the grim reaper, which we all know in the end I will lose to. Not to mention I used to weigh close to 300 lbs. I have different sources of motivation and more time than many due to the nature/success of my business.

I don't know how many good years I have left. I am trying to squeeze every ounce of the time/body I have.

At your age, I wouldn't have been caught dead doing this stuff, so I applaud you. Even if you don't recognize it, your wisdom is beyond your years.

Ahhhh, youre making me blush!

Seriously though, I have had a lot of people say I am doing this at the perfect time and that others say they wish they would have started when I did. (I am 24 btw). My mentality is that I did not start soon enough, me being completely (and I mean COMPLETELY) un-athletic until I began to run a few years ago. I have made leaps and bounds in times and PR almost every race I do, but I am having my type A conflict of not feeling like it is good enough. Who wants to win an age group when they have the potential to win overall?

IMHO its not about winning AG or OA. Its about getting the most you can out of your body/training on the day given the conditions. If you can do that, you are the winner.

I hit 100 miles running for the month - or I will after this evening, anyhow.  Right where I want to be for March.  My biking hours were low but that was mostly due to bikes being in the shop and/or me being sick.  But I'm not worried about that.  My power test this month showed I am still better than last year and I feel on track with my own goals.

Now that we're into daylight savings I'm planning to start riding to work (17 miles or 30 miles each way, depending which route I want to take).

Totally. I could be your mother, Daniel (YIKES!). And I, too, feel like I am racing the clock before I start the slow decline (I'm 43). Still setting run PRs, so that's good. I'll never see a swim PR again (former swimmer, and a sub-5:00 500 free is not happening!!). This is my second go at the IM and I have some demons to conquer. But I also have a life, a husband, two wonderful kids, and a healthy perspective on it all (I think). Sometimes I regret not doing this in my 20's when my body would have been able to recover faster, but dayum, did I have a fun time back then starting my career, meeting my husband, etc. It's all good. Glad I found this sport at some point, at least!!

March's totals:
Bike:28h 11m 52s  - 465.42 Mi
Run:20h 43m 35s  - 131.06 Mi
Swim:7h 55m  - 27600 Yd

The balance is much harder than I expected.  I did 65 hours in March and last week was only around 10-11 hours due to the Olympic race.  My wife has been great, but the guilt of missing anything with the family has been my governor.  I can make just about everything fit (really early or really late workouts) except the long ride/run brick (4.5 hours now) each weekend....and those are going to get really long in April/May.

Just last night my wife said she'll make sure I get the training I need to do well in CdA.  Yea!!  In return, she wants a new car on/by June 26th.  I said "you drive a 3 year old car".  She said, on or by June 26th, honey.  Boo!!

These Ironman events sure are expensive.
