1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by sandishr Sooo, my spring resolution is to check in daily. :-) I've missed a lot the past couple of weeks....we have shirts? Got to go back a few pages of posts and order one! The surgeon/doctors finally cleared me for travel and is comfortable with my pacing on activity/exercise...eye is healing up. So we came to Idaho for a few weeks...a long delayed vacation that was SUPPOSED to be a ski/dogsledding month in Jan/Feb...but that just wasn't in the cards I guess. I'd hoped to do a little skiing but spring has sprung. Good news is that I've done several runs and am up to a 5K (and we're at 5000 feet elevation so its a workout)...but the huge news is I got on a bike today and did 12 miles. My depth perception is still off...well, I guess it probably always will be, it's just a matter of getting used to it and readjusting...so I was nervous, but I did 12 miles with elevation gain and hills on a mountain bike, in an hour....slower than I was last summer, but not a lot. I'm pretty thrilled, and it was a big confidence boost to be able to do it...alone, too. I'm starting to feel like it's safe to set training goals and plans, so intend to do so a lot more over the coming few weeks. Just going to start with biking and running, I think for now, and move into swimming next month. Will catch up on everyone's posts and the shirt order tonight! Sandi So much good news happening right here!!! |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by Snewo DQ What kind of race is Hopkington? As for the cold, I hope you have a wet suit. Yeah I know you were asking Dave It's the 'Season Opener' Sprint triathlon. It's not the earliest New England tri, but it's pretty close. Lake swim, 10 mile bike including the State Park roads and surrounding towns, and of course the 3.1 finish. They have a Duathlon that runs at the same time which is what I'm thinking of doing, the swim is replaced with a 2 mile run. And honestly I think the reason I'm having trouble convincing the wife to let me do it isn't so much that it's on Mother's Day, but that she refuses to do the Season Opener every year. She thinks about it, then decides early on she won't be ready for it, then Mother's Day comes along and it's cold or raining or something and then she feels justified not having done it - the 'see I would have been miserable anyway' thought, you know. So when I come along suggesting I'll do it, she's resistant. I may just have to sign up for it and ask forgiveness instead of permission |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Question for the Masses Before I head out for tonight's swim I wanted to ask about some tech gear. We all like tech gear right? OK, so as I delve deeper into training and reading up on things, people really like the idea of training based on heart rate. I'll be honest, I don't know if that's something that the elite athletes need to do or if that would benefit novice folks too. All I know is that the closest I've gotten to heart rate measuring was using the treadmill or my fancy iPhone camera light thingy. So... A) Should I bother, or is this like me plopping down money on a Tri-bike when I haven't even done a tri with a road bike yet? OR B) Should I consider it? If B then....Any suggestions? I get a little overwhelmed when looking at all of the Garmins and their features. I think I want "Baby's first Garmin". Features that might interest me: - Heart Rate monitor and display (recording for uploading would be nice too) - Swim lap counter (or distance counter) Preferably one that is hands off and doesn't require me to hit a button each lap. Everything else is a nice to have - Sleep info recording - GPS - Bike/Run recording (I use my phone now) - Workout planning - Other stuff I don't even know I need yet - Tells the time (LOL) So what do you think gear heads? |

Have you tried doing something different? I'm talking anything active that you normally don't do. Indoor soccer? Rock climbing/wall? Pickup game of basketball? Hiking? The best part of being fit enough for triathlon is being able to go do anything you want. Reward yourself with some FUN physical activity. Thanks Fifth! I agree about doing something for the fun of it. A pick up basketball or some racquetball would be fun! The thing is - swimming and biking ARE fun... I just have a hard time getting started. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business I think a heart rate monitor is worth the money. Last year - I learned so much about pacing and my body's reaction to it by being able to monitor my HR, so I think it can make a word of difference. I started with the 310 a few year ago but I don't think they make those anymore. I have a 910 - and I spent 300 for it. It won't work for the pool however. I'm not sure which models will. This is a question that Charles or Alan would excel at answering. Gentlemen? |

Veteran 732 Pittsburgh, PA | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Dave O- I think you can benefit a lot from one. I'm not much of an athlete but it's helped me see how hard I'm pushing (or not) for various workouts. It's nice on race day to know what heart rate I can sustain. Or at least that was nice when I was training more seriously. I also really like having a GPS function- as a slow runner, it's better for me to run by milege than by time. I have (I believe) a Garmin 110. It's refurbished and came with the HR strap, and I believe I paid around $100 for it a few years ago on a Best Buy Deal of the Day. I've been happy with it. I believe it can be worn in the water but I've had bad luck with watches in the water before, so I don't wear it swimming. I don't think it has a good mechanism for counting laps anyways- I guess you could hit the lap button each lap if you wanted to. It records workouts- time of each lap (you can set it to autolap, I have it every .5 miles) and average HR, plus I think high HR for the workout. You can upload the data but I never do. I think you'd be looking at a pretty expensive watch for all the features you're looking for. As DQ said, maybe others more expert can chime in. I'm just saying that you don't need to be FOP on a tri bike to benefit from one! |

I have a long way to get to 247 since I'm sitting at an FTP of 212. Well that was over a month ago when I first got the trainer. Much work to be done.... I don't particularly like the TrainerRoad plans (too long of an interval between recovery weeks) but they do have some great workouts for developing FTP. Look for any that include 12-20minute intervals of sweet spot work (88-92% of FTP roughly). Monitor, Tallac, Palisade are good for shorter rides (1hr to 1.5hrs) for longer rides Saint Elias, Fairweather, Pendleton, Hilltop and Logan. They're not easy rides but if you get at least three of those in per week, you'll definitely see an improvement in FTP. The longer the better too. I know time is always an issue but try to do at least one ride over 2 hours per week. Between October 27 and March 15th I've brought my FTP up from 200 to 283watts using pretty much only those workouts and some that I created myself. Edited by adempsey10 2015-03-23 8:40 PM |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Last but not least - workouts! My spin class yesterday was somewhat disastrous. I hit a wall at about 45 minutes and my legs stopped pedaling. I couldn't get them to go at all without backing way down on the resistance. Never had that happen before. I made up for it tonight at swim class though. 1200 which is a PB and quite the achievement for me if you've been following how much I struggle with swim endurance. I've got my free down to about 59 sec/50 which is awesome for me, I was doing 50/50 and burning out fast. My breast is about 1:15/50 which isn't terrible I suppose. I'm psyched with the improvements. Plank - had a chat with my trainer about the low back pain. It's not normal and means that either the hips are slinking or the back is trying to compensate for the abs - either of which is incorrect. Took a rest day yesterday then went back to 2 mins today before the back started. I'll be a little behind the schedule on the challenge sheet but would rather do it without hurting myself ya know? |

I highly recommend training with HR. In fact, I'm of the opinion that if you're not training with at least HR, don't even bother getting out of bed (I'm being cheeky of course). I use the 310xt. It's a midrange Garmin but you won't grow out of it. I recommend avoiding Garmin's running watches with HR because as a triathlete you'll quickly find them annoying when you want to bike/swim with it. The 310xt is technically a running GPS watch BUT it is fully upgradable and capable of being an all round bike computer. It also has a multisport option so you can use it for all three disciplines in a Tri. I bought the quick release kit. It allows the unit to quickly snap off the wrist band onto your bike's handlebars. So during a tri I tuck it up under my swim cap (so that the GPS still functions) I set the auto lap feature to 250m or 500m (depending on the swim distance) that way it vibes every 250m (or 500m or whatever) I swim. Then I snap into my bike for the bike leg and then I snap it on my wrist for the run. I absolutely love it. As far as HR training goes, it will completely change how you think about your training. It allows you to pace better on both the run and bike. It also allows you to quantify your training and see improvements in performance. It has its downsides. Namely its variability (HR is affected my temperature, fatigue, diet, hydration etc) so it's a 'ballpark' metric. But it is SIGNIFICANTLY better than no metrics at all. It's also a good stepping stone to using power (for the bike), which is the pinnacle of training metrics. Now that I have power, I don't really even care about my HR on the bike. HR is still a cornerstone of my run training though and it always will be. Everything you need to know about training with HR can be found in Joe Friel's training bible (either the Tri bible or the Cycling one) and of course anything beyond that or if you need clarification, BDAS has more than the requisite knowledge to get you on the right track.

It was a good strong day in the pool. Heart Rate Monitors I realize that I said that counting my laps swimming was something I wanted, but after reading some of the comments, I'm starting to think the HRM will provide more of a benefit running and cycling when I'm first starting out. Given that, would something like this make more sense for a beginner? http://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/hr.html I already carry my phone with me all the time when I run, for the GPS function. Strapping this thing on beforehand would be NBD. Are there downsides that I'm not considering? Alan I'll have to take a look at those books. Thanks. |
