WOW, Deester!  That's a lot on the mind!

Tell me about it! And I don't have a lot of time to decide AND get relocated, if I accept the position.

How upset are you with your current job?

I was very unhappy with it for about a year. But I finally figured out how to deal with things. (Basically, minimize interaction with management.) Since then, it's been better.

Do you enjoy the current area (still)?

It's a nice residential area. But there's not much to do there. So when I get out of work, I basically go to the gym, then go home.

Is there negotiation potential with the current job regarding job duties/work time/etc.?

I have enough seniority now that I have some flexibility in terms of hours/work. (I'll probably lose this at the new job.) Then again, my current boss gets inflexible at times and micromanages. The new boss told me that he doesn't micromanage.

Do you have job security with current job?

Yes. I won't be laid off. I have seniority and my boss likes me. I'm *pretty* sure that I wouldn't get laid off at the new place though (although you never know what the economy is going to do) -- then again, even with the economy like this, they were able to create a new job for me.

What is potential job growth with the current job?

There was a "higher" position available, and I think they wanted me to apply for it. But it seemed like a "slave labor" position that you need to hold until the next higher position opens. In other words, lots more work with no extra pay. And then you just sit there and hope that the next level opens, and everyone can move up one place.

I didn't apply for it. If the opportunity comes up again, I'd still have a tough time convincing myself to take it....

Are the cost benefits better in the long run with the new job?

Not really. The two are similar in terms of benefits (both short and long term).

Is there a significant "make or break" here (obviously it's not pay)?

I think it's "quality of life." There's more to do in the new place. (Or, at least I hope there is.) Or maybe there will be more people with whom I have stuff in common with.... (Or at least I hope there are.)

Also, I don't trust the management here. (Which is another reason I didn't apply for that position. It would have me working more closely with them.)

Making 18% less but getting a significant raise guaranteed every X months through pay raise, incentives, bonuses, etc. would be worth considering, however, in this economy right now, that's a huge risk to take.

Yeah, it definitely doesn't work that way. It's a state contract. (no raises, bonuses or incentives.) The personnel department told me that they have to go by "years of experience." So it doesn't matter too much what you've done in the past -- the salary is dependent upon the years you've worked and the degree you have....

I had another job offer about 3 years ago, and I turned it down because the salary offer was low. During the past 3 years though, I haven't been particularly happy. Now, the opportunity has come up again -- and the salary offer is (again) less than I expected.

(There are some places where the pay is higher. So I guess I could stay where I am now, and just wait for one of those jobs to open.... But the idea of staying here isn't overly appealing, either.)

Tread lighthly with this, Dee.

Thanks for your insights and questions. I'm still confused though. LOL

That's the problem, I CAN'T tell you what to do.  If it was a "no-brainer" situation, then I would have said "Yeah, take it!", but the discrepancy of pay is quite a drawback.

The best thing to do is discuss it well with your family - and don't forget to make that PROS/CONS sheet to weigh out the factors.  Getting it on paper or a whiteboard helps (but not an Etch-A-Sketch ).

Good luck, Dee!

Holy Buckets Dee!

that's a big decision, and clearly not an easy one

if you take your salary and divide it by the number of hours you work - what's your hourly rate today? what would it be with the new job?  hmmmmm you might actually be getting a raise

i know that doesn't pay the bills though

there's no negotiation on the salary?

Oops, was doing dishes. Ah the glamorous life I lead. I'm great! Had a busy day checking in for this weekend's race and then had a long run followed by a 4000y swim. I feel like someone beat on my back.

Are you in MN?

I finally have my RR up.  I decided to stop proofreading and hit the publish button.  I have been finding grammar errors for the last 3 hours...I wish I wasn't so anal about my writing.  I am sure that there are still some issues, but I am sick of staring at my monitor.  Plus I promised that it would be up before the day was out...and it is after midnight.

Dee,

Wow.  Big decision in short period of time.  You need to figure out what is right for you.  Money does not always equal happiness, but at the same time, you know what you need to survive.  Don't forget to figure in what it will cost to travel back to visit the folks.  Good luck!
