The Cube - 2011-07-11 4:18 PM Coach continuing the beatdown, 80.23 ride/ 2.43 run today just two days after going 5:15 @ Muncie. My training schedule over the next 3-4 weeks is just crazy, lots of bike/run miles. I see lots of eairly nights to bed!!

Early nights and unexpected naps.  I fell asleep on Saturday for 4 hours. I was supposed to get up, swim and pick up my nephew.  Got up too late to get the swim in - got the nephew.

Congrats to all of the Muncie finishers!

I'm staying at the Hyatt Louisville.  Looks like it's relatively close to transition.

Swim question-has this race ever been wetsuit legal? Also does anyone find any of those Swim skins beneficial from a buoyancy standpoint. Any previous experiences with the swim would be beneficial to hear

I have the TYR Torque swim skin.

It does not help at all with buoyancy as the new rules require 100% textile materil, rather than rubber.

The only benefits are with reduced drag in the water which are noticable when you compaire it to wearing just your tri kit.

I am pretty sure the swim has never been wetsuit legal, but that is just a guess based on the climate there. In the words of the Ironman guy at the pre-race meeting for Louisville last year, "If you brought a wetsuit, you just wasted space in your bags." As far as buoyancy from swim skins: the new WTC rules basically ban any suit that gives you buoyancy, all swim skins have to be made of non-buoyant textiles. Simple answer: you aren't getting any help with buoyancy at Louisville. I wouldn't worry about it though, just do the yardage in the pool to build up your endurance and the slight current in the river will help with your speed. I had a terrible swim last year and still went a minute faster than my previous IM when I had a wetsuit and a perfect swim.

Finished up Cardinal Harbour Half Ironman in Lousiville. Good race to do bc about 80% of the bike was on the LOU IM course but the race was longer than 70.3. The race ended up being around 73.1. Swam in the Ohio (38:40- the turn around buoy came loose and drifted farther out), the bike was perfect, lots of climbing and rolling hills except for getting a flat within the first mile(3:02). Only flat part that felt flat was coming back on 42 but the bike ended up being 58 miles. Run was brutal, it was rolling hills with few steep climbs and hardly any shade, this ended up being 13.8 miles (1:57.01).

HIM: 5:44.39

Perfect day for training, temp was 92 and followed race plan and nutrition and body felt great. Glad I have gotten a couple 14-16-18 and 20 mile runs in before this race bc I was able to continue picking up the pace throughout the run to the point that I was able to sprint the last mile into the finish. Glad to see what the bike will be like and knowing that the routes I ride have me more than prepared for the hills of LOU.

Considering this was my 2nd triathlon, couldn't have gone better. Fellow IM LOU'ers, I would look into doing this HIM for training in the future. The route is mostly on IM course, the run is killer with hills so good training even though IM run is flat.

Taking a coach/self-imposed real recovery week. Have been pushing the envelope a little too much lately. heat indices in low 100s not withstanding, training has been tough the last few weeks. I've officially stopped making time predictions for Louisville. I'm going to experience the process and do my best for my first ironman.

Definitely getting in some great heat training in the middle o' the country lately!

No matter when I start my long ride Saturday, I will be finishing in (real) temperatures over 100 degrees. Heat indexes anywhere from 105-113 degrees.

Stay healthy and hydrated, friends.

Doc- Good ideas.

Lisa-Good luck.

I rode 45 miles today. Relaxed. Looking forward to a 2.4 mile open water swim, then helping set-up at the Del Sol Triathlon tomorrow. Then Saturday I'm helping during the swim in my kayak, which should be cool as well.

Happy and Safe training! We are almost there

For me this week is a regularly scheduled recovery week (I get one every 3rd week), but with Muncie last weekend this got cranked up to a SUPER-RECOVERY week! Everything is either easy spinning or easy jogging, but I am still feeling behind the curve a little so I skipped my 30 mile ez ride today. Unfortunately the wife has been fairing worse than me, however, as she has been laid up in bed wallowing in misery due to severe back spasms. Amazingly they do not appear to be a result of the HIM last weekend, according to the chiropractor (who we saw for the first time today) this is due to her spine pulling out of alignment that probably occurred over a long period of time. Looks like we should have been seeing a chiropractor much sooner. Chiropractor visits will probably be a weekly thing from now until race day. She is definitely out for this weekend's long brick (50 and 8 miles) and long run (20 miles), we are just hoping she gets back early next week so it doesn't affect Louisville too much.

Hope you guys are all feeling much better than this family is! Keep up the hard work, payday is coming FAST!

Hey everyone. This will be my first Ironman.  Starting to get a little nervous, especially about the swim as I am a rather weak swimmer (use a snorkel).  But looking forward to the race.  Hopefully the hills on the bike won't be that bad.

Hey Cincyman... pending where you are around town, there is usually a group up at Caesars Creek on the weekends working on the OWS.  you can check out their message board at cincyexpress.com.  I am up north in Hamilton, and Ive heard the hills in Oxford are supposed to be similar to train on for the bike.

Be safe getting that long stuff in this weekend everyone!!

trirun- Good work!

Jeremy- Often less is more. Be well.

Cincyman- I think snorkels are allowed, but you would want to verify that. I don't recall if that issue came up this year on IMLOU or during a discussion last year during Timberman 70.3. Keep at it, be patient, and you can do it.

Anyone-Swam 2.4 this morning (a little slower than I would have liked...but it was a positive experience). Icing Achilles now...riding 11 miles to help set-up for a local triathlon tomorrow, in about 30 min.

Peace.

Question for the group about your longest bike and run distances leading up to the peak of training...please chime in with your longest planned bike and longest planned run.

I'm following the Don Fink intermediate program where the long rides and runs are listed by time, not distance, and wondering if I'm getting enough distance covered to be best prepared.

Some folks are talking about multiple century rides, others are hitting 20+ miles on the run at the peak...what about you?

My longest planned bike will be 112 ~ twice.  I will be riding the course on July 23rd & Aug 6th.

My longest planned run will be 19 or 20 ~ once.  The weekend of Aug 6th (three weeks out).

Last year, my peak weekend for IMFL (three weeks out), was a 19 mile run & 4,000 yard swim on Saturday, followed by a 112 mile bike & 7 mile run on Sunday.

Longest ride will be the full course on Aug. 6 (followed by a 2.5-hour run the next day!). Next-longest ride will likely be a 6-hour ride next weekend.

Longest run will be at the 3-hour mark, but will have done at least two 2.5-hour runs leading up.

Longest ride will be 100-110 depending on speed, but roughly 6 hours - probably this weekend, the following weekend, and maybe one more.

I'll do a couple longish runs of 12-14 miles and this weekend I'm supporting a friend in a 24-hour race and will run 24-30 miles over the course of 24 hours while pacing him.

I've got a couple of 6 hour ride with 1 hour bricks planned. Should be over 100 miles riding and 7ish miles running.

Also building up to a 3 hour run and that will be in the 20-22 mile range.

One last sprint tri this weekend and then just training for the A race.

I think my longest ride will the 113 I did in the mountains two weekends ago. I backed off to a flattish 60 last weekend after a big run volume week, but I'll be back to 90 or 100 tomorrow, riding on the coast - fairy flat (and relatively cool).  I'll probably do two more 100-mile hilly rides in the heat before starting a 2-week taper.  Not much humidity for me to access around here tho.

For some reason, I was completely wasted this week.  Other than Tues track workout, I mostly just piddled around.  I don't know if it's the heat or the season catching up with me, but I took yesterday and this morning completely off.  I feel great now.  Will run 10 after work and then rest up for the weekend's shenanigans.

Big weekend everyone!  The more we suffer now, the less we'll suffer in six weeks.

You might check the Lousiville website, but I thought I remember in 2009 that snorkels were not allowed.
