I have to agree on John's running zones - they look too low.    I guess he has lots of untapped potential waiting to be unleashed.   These are my estimated zones from 2010 (still using them) based on a 10k I did that year.  I've recently been guessing that these are low for me and I'm a couple age groups up.

edit: the bike zones look too low too.   Does the EN plan have you doing some testing soon?   It will be interesting to see where you really are.

Why do they seem low? relative to what?  I bet if you looked at Kim's you would say the same thing.  I think HR numbers are incredibly individual.  I just did a LT run test.  My LT HR dropped 7 beats (from 168 to 161) from the August test yet my pace was :16/m faster.  I consider that a good thing.

The only thing I find interesting in these is there is no span in Z5. Like you, I use 5a, 5b, 5c. I couldn't tell you how they figure into anything however. I never see go out and run 10' Z5b, instead I see VO2 workouts that somehow must take that into consideration.  I'm assuming EN has a reason for the way they do things too.  Right John or Dino?

Yes, John's run zones are very close to mine. We are twins like that. Mine are lower than what's in my training log, they have gone down every time we've tested. It's all very individual, as Suzy and Linda point out, however, Dan, I think it's time for you to do a proper run LT test. And let us know how that goes, pretty please!

John, thanks posting that pic! I love her top! It's super cute!!

Suzy, Linda, Kim: You are, of course, correct.   There is a lot of variance within any given age group and HR is very individual.   I know that and I've heard it over and over again.  However, it seems like people's logs always show numbers higher than mine and  I guess I was surprised to see someone younger with numbers almost identical to mine.

HR also does decline with age so that could be a factor in the lower numbers you are seeing Wink

Kim: yes, one of these days I will get around to trying a run LT test and a bike LT test - maybe the bike at the beginning of March and the run at the beginning of April.

We're back in tha land of frozen after another crazy day of flights yesterday.  Today it's grocery shopping, seeing my 88 year old mom and then heading to the pool for the first time in quite a while.  Still carrying the internal (and external) glow of Kauai though!

My questionis "who besides me was psyched about Lance's performance?".  After watching a video or two, I think he has upside in T2 just like me. Can't believe he sat down to put on his socks and shoes!  I think he is going to add some major focus on triathlon this year.  Woo-Hoo--go LA!

almost every hotel on galveston island is sold out for march 31st.  only thing going on that weekend is lone star.

i think this puts to bed any question whatsoever of lances impact on our sport.

edit.. i'm seriously considering heading down to watch the race.  that place is going to be a freakin' zoo!

I was.  I love watching amazing athletes.  Tony and I followed the live blog updates all morning.  I wish we could have seen the run.  I also checked out his tweets before and after the race.  They are always so funny.  So he's doing Lonestar?  It will be interesting to see what he does to that bike course.  It was sooooo flat.  Even the wind wasn't that bad.

John - you do need to go and be our on location MG reporter.  :-)

I was very impressed by his showing. There are some good clips of him during the run on the Interwebs Sam. He has a schedule of events for the year and will do IM France this year. In a video interview on ST, George Hincapie talked about Lance and triathlon and said he was a freak of an athlete. Also said he would not do one. Besides cycling tennis is his other sport.

I cannot answer for Skinny because I have never used EN's heart rate zones.

I am addicted to my Powermeter on the bike for training zones and my run zones are set by pace not by HR ..... when I do actually run!

However, I know my HR has dropped every year when training in my respective zones.  Increased Age, a better base, a lower resting HR, I don't know and don't usually worry about it until Cross Season when my HR gets pegged for 40 minutes straight during a race and I am worrying about it actually popping out of my chest.

Welcome back Minnow!!!

George has been mistaken for Dale (and even Chet) as has Tony, often by the same people! And lets not forget Kyla as Kayla....but NOT Lance, get it right! Jayne is not Deb and vice versa, get it straight would you???

damn you.  i was avoiding this... me speaking on behalf of en.. you're loving this, aren't you. yeah they have a reason which i don't think  is any different than other reasoning for training by hr, workouts based on work.  work is captured in the form of hr.  testing so far has been similar to what i've done in the past, all field tests.  my zones have have lowered a bit (+/- 7 bpm) but more importantly my efficiency in the form of speed / work has increased a ton.  my analysis is not just ball park annual test, foreign indicators such as temporal nature are taken into account.  heaven knows i need to kinda figure out wtf i'm doing before early november.

next up... lets try some gu roctane.

John... What does the (buzzed) text I sent from soccer game have to do with anything?

Gu Roctane... Steve was trying to sell me on some powedered Gu Roctane stuff yesterday. All I know is that it was purple and sweet, but not as sweet as Gingerbread Gu, which is like cookie dough on steroids.
