Moonrocket - 2012-09-17 3:52 PM So, this Sunday I'm doing an Octoberfest sprint triathlon. They even give you a pint glass as swag. So, what should I get to fill my new beer glass??? Any suggestions?

After a workout, a nice Pale Ale would be good.  Nice easy drinker after excercise.

X2... There is something refreshing about a hoppy IPA.  What section of the country do you live in?  Let me know and I'll suggest something more specific.

I'm right outside Boulder, CO. I actually live less than a mile from where they make Dale's Pale Ale.

Yup, I say go with the pale ale, followed up with an IPA. Last time I was in Denver, there seemed to be quite a few microbreweries/brewpubs!! Enjoy.

Of course on the waaay outside chance that you fail....warm coors lite for you out of a dirty ashtray...Smile

Oh My the punishment keeps getting worse! First it was a warm Coors, then a warm Coors and now out of an ashtray?  Good Gwad!

Ok, finally off the beaches of So Cal Cooland got my race report done. Pales in comparison with Big D's but here it is: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=461236

Bought a growler of Imperial Russian Stout for my one man support team.  Also, I secretly enjoyed the end of my run as I chick'd a guy who had been trading places with me throughout the run and was in a younger age group!Wink

Great job on the race!

Great incentive for your support team!

Fell off the wagon on after posting that I'd reached 175.  The fall wasn't pretty.  Reaching my penultimate goal + coming down with a massive cold caused me to miss my workout on Saturday.  My Nascar experience tweaked my back something fierce (no I didn't wreak) and I skipped my long run on Saturday telling myself that an extra day of rest would put to rest the pain in my hips and feet.  But then Sunday came and I hit rock bottom.  Let's just say that the kids and dog might go hungry as a result of Sunday's totally slothfest.  Sat on the couch, watched football, and only got up to baste a turkey shoulder.  Might be the first time I've gone three days without doing anything since November.  Not pretty.

Luckily, I got back on the wagon again today.  Ate well and managed to get in a bike ride that was cut short thanks to having a help my son with a school project.

OK - here's my question: How hard do I want to push myself this week?  I've got three weeks to the HIM and I want to try to make it as painless as possible... I was thinking of trying to do all three distances - a mile swim, a 13 mile run, and a 56 mile ride  I feel decent now.  Just wondering how much going big will help.

Remind me to tell y'all tomorrow how I spent the $$$ I won from my beer challenge...

Welcome Back! I have no idea on the training since I have yet to go further than a sprint. Three weeks out is usually a pretty big week on a sprint plan though. Other than tweaking your back was the NASCAR thing cool?

It was great... The cars were real (a couple of years old though) but what was neat was to actually be able to see the banking on the track... Awesome.  It's something you can't really pick up on TV but you feel it even when there is only a little banking...

As far as the beer goes - that's too far west for me.  Kevin's your guy for west coast beers (and crappy football teams)Wink

So what are your plans for the off season? I have traken a week off from training and need to get started again. My plan is to do the strength plan but I am not sure what to do for tri training. Share your thoughts.

Love the fact that you are already starting to think about next year!  Awesome.  To really give you a decent answer about what you should be focusing during the off season - I need to know what some of your goals are for next year.  For example, Kevin and I want to make sure we are ready to do a HIM and then a IM next year so we are doing back to back HIM plans in the off season so we can build on our fitness.  What do you want to accomplish?

Push it hard this week.  Then Taper the next 2.  First week of Taper, cut the distances but keep the intensities.  Second week of taper, do all 3 sports/race prep workouts at about 20 min per sport.  Big time taper for race week.

More $$$ to come.  Keep up the hard work.

I think this is about right.

I got 2 months until the snow flys and biking is over, so I got 2 months to bike as much as I can. I am also behind on my mileage goals for the year, I wanted 85k per week and I am at 83, so second goal is get that up, try to stay off the hills for a couple months, although we will see.

Then, once November hits it is back to the drawing board, 3 month 50k plan, then a 3 month marathon plan, then a 3 month ultra plan. Try to pick up the yoga and core work during the non yoga months.

Loving it.

So, in case you were wondering, I love running. Had the best run today, 4k to the trail, flat, then hammered the hill on the trail, hammered the decent on the trail, hammered the flat on the trail and an easy 5k back. Nice 13k run, leaves falling, hot sun beating down. There are many thing equivalent but nothing better.

My general goals are:

  • Get faster
  • Add more volume
  • Intensity
  • Lose 30 or so pounds

These are great goals and the off-season is a great time to work on them.  Here are a couple of thoughts:

- To get faster on the run - you need to add two kinds of workouts - interval workouts and hill workouts.  I found this article a few weeks ago and I plan on following it like the bible. http://www.roy-stevenson.com/running-training.html  I would also suggest that you make the most of the snow and go for long slow distance runs on the weekends.  I have always loved winter best for running because it gives you the perfect excuse to go slow.  Enjoy it!

- To get faster in the pool - you've got to work on technique and I think the best way to do that is to join a masters class.  They are fairly cheap and there are classes at different locations all around the country.  You get to train with other athletes who swim at your speed.  When you get faster, you go to a faster lane and swim with faster swimmers.  Plus, you get about 5 minutes of 1 on 1 help each sesson which I think should make a big improvement. http://www.usms.org/

For the bike - I think the answer there is lactate threshhold training and riding for shorter distances at faster speeds.  Here is one of my favorite workouts from last year.  I picked a show to watch on my computer which was an hour long.  I'd ride at a pace that would keep my heart rate about 130 - 138.  Then when a commercial came on - I tried to pedal hard enough to get my heart rate up to 155-160.  Once it was there I would spin for a minute and then back to down until my heart rate was back to 130-135.

Here is a cool article that explores the whole off season for each of the disciplines.

http://www.active.com/fitness/Articles/Off-season_training_tips_for_runners__cyclists_and_triathletes.htm

Also - build the volume with the 10% rule - doing so will help you burn the calories and take off the pounds!

Hope this helps!

Awesome - running in the fall is awesome.  The only thing that beats it is a run in the slow with the snow absorbing the sound waves... It's like running in your own silent movie.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Back on track... I stretched like it was my job.  I ate well.  Enjoyed a nice ride on a beautiful day.  Sucked down a nice pumpkin beer with dinner and stopped there.

Tomorrow - I'm gonna try to swim a mile nice and slow and see how that goes.

I'm also gonna try to run as far as I can.  If my hip is sore, I'll stop at 10.  If it hurts, I'll just stop.  But if I feel good (and I hope I'm feeling like a million bucks) I want to try to run/walk 13 miles with a 7min run and 3 min walk interval.  (Steak tips tomorrow for dinner in the dining hall - I plan on making room for a few... God knows, I need my proteinWink  Day off on Friday.  60 on the bike on Saturday.

My wife just walked by - "Are you writing to your tri buddies?"

Nice! I love fall! Perfect running weather. I'll have to try running in the snow. I usually grab skis if there's snow.

Ha ha. I have two groups I'm in online. This and one from when I was pregnant. Every once in a while I'll tell my husband "this guy from my due date club just kicked butt in a half ironman" (Kevin that was you- you didn't have a baby in Dec 09 did you?). I guess tri buddies is better than referring to you as my due date club :-)

Also - build the volume with the 10% rule - doing so will help you burn the calories and take off the pounds!

Hope this helps!

That is good advice. I have a difficulty with cutting volume, even if it means getting faster, I know you are shocked. I just have had such success with high volume and low intensity, success being not being injured.

I am going to mix it up this year once I am off the bike though. Going to check out the Canova program. More intensity than I have been used to in the past, but I think I am ready for it.

check it out.

I am amazed with peoples success with low volume high intensity programs though. Just be careful.

Moonrocket - 2012-09-19 8:43 PM Today the number fron my calf came true for the year. My husband got me one of this waterproof iPod shuffles! I can't wait to see how it works and if it helps with swimming boredom! Now I need to hop on my spin bike and burn off some cake.
May make it difficult to count your laps though. But yeah, I would risk that for tunes.

I have trouble counting without music! Laughing

I would start basing my workouts on time...just to have music to kill some of the boredom!

SportzVision - 2012-09-18 9:50 PM So what are your plans for the off season? I have traken a week off from training and need to get started again. My plan is to do the strength plan but I am not sure what to do for tri training. Share your thoughts.

Love the fact that you are already starting to think about next year!  Awesome.  To really give you a decent answer about what you should be focusing during the off season - I need to know what some of your goals are for next year.  For example, Kevin and I want to make sure we are ready to do a HIM and then a IM next year so we are doing back to back HIM plans in the off season so we can build on our fitness.  What do you want to accomplish?

This is some great stuff. I also want to include some strength training . I did last year and I feel it made a difference. Here is my confession.... I literally feel scared when I push myself. I don't know if anyone has felt that and I am working on not letting fear stop me. It is strange to have this feeling grow in the pit of my stomach whenever I am lifting heavier or swimming harder. Afraid of what? I haven't a clue! That I might explode? That if I push hard I may collapse? I may push and not see results? These are all illogical I know so I want to improve my mental toughness too. I am going to define my goals this weekend and decide what I really want and how will I get what I want.
