And I'm still pretty much eating Whole30 and feel really good.  I've obviously had some things not Whole30 (cheesecake, cheese, greek yogurt, a few other things) but for the most part I'm eating what I did for those 30 days.  I've had beer 3 times, and didn't feel great the next couple of days - puffy, retaining water.  So I'll keep that to a minimum.  Shocking!!!!

Not sure what we'll eat in Hawaii - spam?  We are going to a luau one night.  Probably a lot of fruit and cocktail drinks.

I can see why Whole30 wouldn't work for a lot of folks.  My husband tried to eat with me, but he can only eat so much meat so he said no way.  I tried Paleo a few times and always failed.  I'm not sure why this time I was able to go the 30 days, but I'm glad I did.

My sweet tooth is totally gone, I do not crave sweet things anymore.  That's huge for me.  Not to say I didn't enjoy the cheesecake, because I certainly did, but I won't go back to having ice cream or candy pretty much every night.  It will just be the occasional splurge which is ok.

Carrie - all my workouts are stress relievers, especially running.  Running alone (or with my dog) is the best way for me to zone out and forget about whatever is going on at work at that moment.  Don't need to talk, don't need to think, just run.

I thought when crazy man left in December things would settle down, but with a new sheriff in town all the regulars are playing the same old games trying to make themselves look good (and others not so good).  I'm soooooo tired of these games, and don't play them, so it really stresses me out.

But, we are off to Hawaii tomorrow morning for 8 days.  I'm going to turn off from my work email on my phone tonight and not think about it.  One more day....

Hawaii sound glorious!  I hope you have an amazing trip.  Any cool stuff planned or is this just for R&R?

The first part of the trip is with my husbands work (he made president's club), but they really only have 3 dinners planned.  The rest of the time is whatever we want to do (and pay for).  We added a few days to the trip and will move to another part of the island (we are going to Maui).  So far we have only planned to drive to the top of that volcano and watch the sun rise, snorkeling, drive to Hana with several stops along the way to hike, see water falls, various beaches, and check things out.  We may do an island hopper one day to Oahu (go to Pearl Harbor), but we have not booked that yet.

It'll be fun, my husband has never been to Hawaii.  I've been a few times so we are doing all the things he wants to do.  I'm not a beach person at all, I prefer mountains, hiking, and being active.  I'd say we'll try paddle boarding or surfing but I am so not coordinated that's not going to happen.  I'm hoping for a lot of exploring and not just hanging out on the beach.  Regardless, it'll be a nice break from things.

OK, just finished my 1:30 hot yoga and 1:10 low cadence bike ride ... I am pooped!

I know I need to train for my race, but does anyone else really use their workouts to relieve the stress of work or whatever?  I really didn't want to go to yoga tonight, but I know it really helps relax me. Then it was just like automatic pilot on the bike ... I find myself on auto pilot alot lately

If there is any way for your to do take your stress out on the bike, ESPECIALLY a low cadence workout, that would be best.

Yep, did that last night ... unfortunately ran out of fuel since I did hot yoga first.

And just found out I have to do part of a presentation to my bosses, bosses, bosses boss ... 4 levels up, in a couple weeks.  Talk about uppping the stress level ... CRAP

Have a great trip! Sounds like you all are going to have fun. I'm with you on the mountains as opposed to the beach. As far as eating, fresh fish, veggies, coconut, fresh fruit? Sounds like you have things under control so you'll do well!

Well, went last night to view the pool. Signed up at the facility. Have access to all the equipment and classes. The important thing is how open the pool is for swimming. No masters classes though so what do I need to focus on?

First thing should be to focus on building up endurance to comfortabley cover the swim distance (about 1900 yards for an Olympic) once you are there the focus can be on building speed.

It's way too slow in here!!!!

3000 yards done in the pool this morning.  I did some speed sets, and I really started to get fatigued toward the end.  The swim pushed me so that's good.  Low cadence intervals to do later today.  I'm exhausted and starving.  I can't eat enough after a swim!

What's the best way to estimate calories burned for a swim?  I know it's an estimate and not an exact science.  For instance, today's swim was 3000 yards and some of it was very hard.  Garmin said I burned 489 calories.  Sound right?  Too high? I think it's too high.  I always underestimate calories burned on the swim and bike for counting/weight loss purposes.

Jen that's sounds about right for a tough workout.  I'd peel off 100 cals or so for an easier swim.

1:20 run with tempo intervals this morning.  Temp was right at/just below freezing when I started and I forgot gloves.  Dumb.  Really feel like my aerobic durability is starting to come together.  I felt better as I progressed through the run.

Okay, I've noticed over the past 2 or 3 years that 1) I'm getting old and my mind is failing faster than I ever imagined, or 2) intense training for months on end does have an effect on my brain's ability to multi-task, and/or remember things.  The latest example is my bone-headed move last night: I left my Garmin 910 on the shelf in the locker at the Y - of course it's gone and I'm out one expensive watch.  It sucks because of I have become very reliant on the Garmin for so many things.

Anyway, I also notice that while swimming laps in the pool, if I'm doing 100 sprints or any kind or all-out for that matter, it's nearly impossible for me to do simple math, breaking down the sets, laps, lengths, etc.  Sure, it's only multiples of 25, but so hard to process when the brain is lacking the O2.

Aside from forgetting articles of clothing at home, 10 miles the wrong direction to work, having to make the loop-de-loop to get your work-boots, or dress shirt in the 7:00am traffic is such a joyful way to start the day, there's the times that I'm standing in the port-o-jon at the project site and realized my boxers are on backwards - freaking GREAT!!!

Are there any other colorful Training moments illustrating the fun of O2 depravation, or just plain getting old?  Please tell me I'm not the only one...

LOL.  Sorry about the watch.  That sucks, but you're not the only one.  I tend to blame it on leaving the house at 4-4:30 and not being awake, maybe it's old age?  IDK.  I have had several impromptu trips to Target or Walmart for belts, socks, khakis, etc.  I should just live with my HR monitor on 24/7 so I don't forget it at this point really.

Todd - that sucks. Having just acquired my 910 I cannot imagine losing it. I frequently forget necessary workout clothes/jammers. This results my having to swim occasionally in baggy shorts that I often have to yank up during the swim or having to wear jammers doing core work, only once, ....mmm that's an attractive sight. I also frequently forget necessary undergarments to change into for work. I also have left coffee mugs and my cell phone on the roof of my car when loading it up in the dark. Also, the other day, I could not remember if I turned off the stove after making hardboiled eggs to bring to work...so I turned around after heading to work to check - it was off.

That totally sucks. I've been really lucky. I've left my entire swim bag which between fins, paddles, goggles, suits is north of $100 several times. I've left my ipod several times. To this point I've been lucky and recovered them every time. I couldn't live without my Garmin and would have to pick one up that day. I agree with Scott that we're victims of getting up at the crack of dawn and usually on time constraints. Tired and rushed don't mix well.

Todd - Sorry to hear you left your 910 at the gym.  I'd be so mad.

I'm not forgetful under fatigue, but ask me to put together a string of coherent sentences when I'm sleep deprived and ya got me.  Sometime I read what I've written on here, and I'm confused.  LOL  I'm a total slop tart, too.  My car should be condemned.  Kids are in my room/bed all night long, and my sleep is always broken.  When in the world will they sleep/stay in their own beds?  I get tired of being tired.

Don't know how old you are, but maybe some sort of brain enhancing supplement like the B vitamins would help.

I am just curious.  I understand why the swim comes first in a tri, but why the bike before the run.  I did the biathon on Feb. 2 where the run came before the bike, and I didn't get all rubbery legged like I do when it's the bike then the run.

This is interesting.  People generally burn more calories swimming because not only are they doing the activity of siwmming but because the water is cooler than our bodies the body also expends energy so we can keep warm.  That extra expenditure of energy causes people to get really hungry after swimming.

Maybe stability when you get really tired.

I always though a cool event would be a half & half where instead of an IM you do back to back HIMs. You could even get Hood or another dairy company to sponsor it. All the extra transitions, pacing the first bike and run correctly, having to swim on very tired legs....Obviously the downside is the logistics of keeping all three courses open for that extended period, the volunteers staying at one station a lot longer especially in the kayaks.....

I've always thought it was in decreasing order of potential injury/danger.  The swim is the most dangerous, then the bike and then the run.  While you can walk a run course zoned out/exhausted, its tough to swim or bike under the same circumstances.
