Have you tried squash? I used to be all about racquetball until I tried squash. Have not played racquetball in 20 years now!

No not yet. I played tennis a lot growing up and just got into racquetball. There is a racquet club abiut 30min away that has everything. I'll have to find a way to convince my wife to let me join that club too.

Burd - 2013-03-12 4:35 PM Well over dinner my son informed me during his gifted class today they celebrated pi day, yes 2 days early but the teacher will be gone Thursday.  They had a competition with grades 1-5 who could recite the most digits of pi.  His classmate got 86 digits correct, doh!.  Keep in mind this kid is only in 2nd grade.

That is amazing....but it is not like they have training for a triathlon to fit in around their memorization.

jlangene - 2013-03-12 1:20 PM I need some bike advice. I am thinking it is time for a new bike.but I dont see myself buying a 2500 bike. is it possible to find a decent beginner road or tri bike for around 500? Does anyone have recommendations where to start what do I look for? Any help would be great. Thanks

Recommendations:

1.  Ignore tri-bikes, for now.  A solid drop-bar road bike will give you great bang for your buck, will leave you open to join any club rides, and will likely be more comfortable initially.

2.  Buy a new bike.  Unless you know a good deal about bikes, it is easy to get burned on a used bike, and there's a lot of garbage out there for high prices.  An entry-level road bike is probably around $600 to $1,000, and a used bike might be about 2/3 of that price; add in a $100 tuneup, and you're almost to square one, plus all the unknowns.  I bought a used bike last year, and I'm happy with it, but by the time I rebuild the wheel bearings, have the drivetrain adjusted, bought a new saddle, and the like, I'm within striking distance of a new bike with technology 4 years updated.

3.  Drivetrains don't really matter at this level, but you get what you pay for.  High level groupsets (groupset = derailleurs, shifts, brakes) have tighter tolerances, better quality, and more consistent adjustability.  For Shimano, Sora

4.  Aluminum is perfectly acceptable, and pretty much all you can afford at a low price point.

5.  Be especially wary of older bikes.  Bike tech is almost like computers now - new stuff coming out all the time, and the old stuff getting cheaper.  A 21 speed bike (3x7) might as well be an ox-cart compared to today's 11 speed cassettes at the bleeding edge.

Currently $750, there's a nice Fuji 1.0 at Performance.  (http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1094284_-1_400306__400306)

2x10 drivetrain, Tiagra/105 mixed groupset.  Sizes are a bit limited.

For $700, try:  http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1117105_-1_400306__400306  2x9 drivetrain, mixed sora/tiagra group.

At $850, you can get:  http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1120682_-1_400306__400306

Full 2x10, lots of sizes available, full tiagra groupset.

If there's one nearby, Performance Bike has some solid deals, and the sales people generally know what they are talking about.  Your Local Bike Shop is probably a good bet too, but expect to pay a little more.

Wow thanks for the detailed advice!  That is awesome, I am looking at performance bike now!  One more question, they list different sizes how do I know what size to get?  I would assume it is based off your height?  I am 5'10" Thanks again!

I think that is great advice.  Especially on the used front, I got a great deal on a cross bike last year, but then the derail-er fell into the rear wheel and I was out another 300 bucks to fix that.  Just wasn't tuned up right.  So I got a 700 bike for 300 dollars then another 300 bucks to fix it.

Also, a used bike may be fine for little 5-10 rides, but you are going to be out there for a bit longer.  You need half decent components.  Don't let them upsell you too much in that regard but at least Tiagra or Sora.

Also, many bike shops offer lifetime service.  For most people that doesn't matter.  But if you put 20-30 hours on your bike in a month during the summer you will be happy to have that.

No swim this morning, got a weird feeling in my knee last night when I was playing with my niece. She likes to fly so its like doing suicides up and down the hallways, kids can be great exercise.

I did ice it last night and a bit this morning and it feels better.  If it keeps up Ill see the doc but it maybe a bit of turning 30 and being a bit overweight for so many years that is causing the prob.

Planning on the gym tonight with the wife so Im not too upset with missing the swim today. Also going to take the bike around the block this afternoon. It rained all day yesterday and washed a lot of the sand off the roads. So maybe Ill get in a mile or two. I read all the great bike suggestions and just registered for a free bike class at REI in April.

On track for the 30/31 if I count racquetball, pushups and a little yoga.

Hope the knee is feeling better.  I got outside too and it was great.  I'm not sure the temp got above 50 but with the last two snowfalls measuring more than 20 inches it was wonderful!

Great work on the 30/31 challenge!

Just got back from my first outside ride of the season.  It was great to get outside and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.  It's crazy how out of shape I feel.  I had to work my butt off to finish with a 13.5 mph average.  Last year when I finished up the season I was hitting almost 17 consistently.  Plsu, my balance is off from riding the training.

I'm not b!tching - just saying that I think I was kidding myself about the difficulty of my rides on the trainer.  It's going to be in the 40's for the next 10 days but I am really looking forward to getting back out there and getting it done.

I took a quick 2 miles outside on my bike and it feels good to actually have a bike that fits...  just like you I realized Im going to need to log some good miles outside before the triathlons I plan to do in June July and Aug.

Ill say this Ill b!tch about this weather, at a nice taste of spring and now snow is back in the forecast for tomorrow.

Good work out there.... what beer is on the menu for tonight?

Grabbed a knee brace out of the closet and iced it. Brace helped a lot.

Agree on new bike.

Agree on bike fit importance.

If you are having any trouble with your legs after your bike fit, make sure you go back and have them look at it. I went back today and got a less aggressive aero set up. The bike fit guy was amazed at my poor hip flexibility. Bars came up and moved forward to open up my hip angle. I felt great today and did a 20 mile bike and 3 mile run Brick. I should have done that when I had my ITB issue. My bike problem showed up in my run by exposing my weak glutes when my ITB was overstressed.

Finally got back in the swing of things took an 11 mile bike ride this afternoon and it was beautiful 76 degrees supposed to be in the upper 80's by Friday.  May even have to turn the AC on Tongue out.  So I have been researching bikes and talking to folks on here and at bike shops and am going to stop by Albuquerque on the way to Las Cruces Friday and take a look at a few bikes and try some out.  I found some that I think are in my price range and have the tiagara shifters, but the folks at the bike shop are telling me that I really should get at least the 105's because they are sooo much smoother.  I will try them both out and see if I can tell a difference, but an extra 200-300 is making me wonder.  Lots more to learn about bikes thank I ever knew.

Made it to the gym this morning for a s/b workout.  Amazing how the wheels fall off in the pool if you let it go.  Lots of work ahead for this season.  Something to look forward to.  My hip aches like an OLD man.  The thing is, I'm not that OLD yet.  Hoping this thing just sort of goes away with time.  Gonna press on.  Marathon in 9 weeks or so.

2 things - 1) I hope you get sunburned Wink (it was 31 with a 22 degree windchill here this morning) and 2) I have 105s and love them - so I agree with the folks at LBS.  The only way you will know if they are worth the extra 300 bucks (that's 7.5 cases of beer) is to try them... Good luck

Don't worry dave you can be making fun of me when the temps here are over 110 and it is miserable.

Thor I hope all goes well with the doctor and the shoulder heals quickly

If you all will tolerate it I have another stupid newbie bike question. What is the difference in a road bike and cyclocross bike? Is it just more aggressive tires? Can you use your road bike on dirt or gravel or is it strictly pavement? I would like something I could use for different rides but is that too much to ask? Thanks!

Hey everyone, looks like I get to play in the Pro-Am Face Off for Alzheimer’s hockey tournament the end of April. Of course I have to raise a ton of money so if anyone would like to donate, you can do so online at:

Thanks!

I love cross bikes, and my next bike purchase will probably be one.  I am lucky enough to live near a 50+ mile limestone trail, plus Chicago has a very active Cyclocross Cup I plan to participate in next winter.

A CX bike will have a slightly more upright position and slightly more comfortable frame geometry, and will be significantly less aerodynamic.  The frame will also be wider to accommodate fatter tires.  Brakes are either discs or cantilevers, which shed mud and dirt and stop slightly differently.  Road bikes are typically dual-pivot brakes, which provide predictable and easily-modulatable braking.

A CX bike with a tire change makes a decent road bike.  However, it will not be as fast as a road bike.  A road bike is strictly a pavement creature, while a CX bike will handle quite a bit of terrain.  A CX bike is still a hard-tail design, so it won't replace a dedicated off-road mountain bike.

Like I said, I like cross bikes, and my next bike will likely be one.  However, from a road perspective, they are a compromise in design.  Evaluate your needs and goals, and where you will be riding, and pick something to suit.

Well pi update.  That second grader in my sons class I was talking about, well since he won the elementary school he went to our middle school and ended up the champ with a solid 172 digits in 2 minutes.  The top middle school student only had 166.

I am starting to get sick about this knee issue.  Is there a thing such as like ghost or phantom pain?  Like it's actually healing but my mind says it still hurts since I'm nervous about it?  Does it not start to heal if there is still fluid in the knee and swollen inside since the doc said I had fluid last week in it?  I kind of jumped on it and there was no pain but I feel the burning (don't know how else to describe it) but not as bad.  Still hurts when I tap it though.  Please tell me once the fluid leaves it will heal faster. RAWR my rant is done.

See the doc and heal up the shoulder Thor so you can kick some booty in the game!!  You need to have someone tape the game and throw a clip online so we can see you in action, honestly that would be cool.
