Uhh not anymore....Doug just ran a 15 min 5k so TEAM ONE is back in the lead.

15 min 5k or 19 min 5k?  Either way, he is one smokin' fast dude!

Is his last name bolt???  15 min 5K???  That is impossible isn't it?  Or smoking fast!

And that is shall be --Douglas Bolt!! Nah I was just joking around....but he did run 19minutes. I would just be starting my 4k when he would be sipping his Starbucks at the finish line

gadgetlaw - 2009-05-28 4:29 PM Hi all,

Thanks for the encouragement on my run!  I think a big difference is that I am not very good at pacing.  I never know how fast to run.  Usually, during my races (5ks),  I would have some energy left at the end.  This time, I tried to go faster during the entire race.  I still don't know how to pace myself though.  Any suggestions??
Also, I had a really weird swim this morning.  I did my half mile, then paused for a minute and adjusted my goggles and cap.  When I started to swim again, I felt really dizzy.  I swam 4 laps and thought, I have to get out of the pool NOW!!  I ran to the bathroom and hugged the toilet for a while.  Let's just say that it was a good thing that I hadn't eaten anything yet.  I feel better now, I think.  I have had vertigo in the past and don't know if that was the problem, or something else.  Anybody ever get dizzy when swimming?  Do you think it is something I should be worried about?
I will turn in my swim time from this morning, but it may hurt Team won!!

Karen

Karen,  If it just happened that one time I wouldn't sweat it but if it happens again you might want to try some of the measures listed here on BT.  My wife for some reason got dizzy/sick the first 2 times we went to our OWS lessons this year so we did a bit of research.

Right now she just started wearing ear plugs and hasn't had a problem since.  Other people had to get a bit more drastic and take Dramamine or something called Bonie or something similar.  Also eating ginger was a very popular remedy for people and was just as effective as the drugs if not more so.

IMO, something to take seriously especially when you get to OWS, so something to get worked out in the pool where you are a bit safer if you have a serious problem.

Yeah 19 mins is a smoking time.  I am really hoping to run it in around 24 which  would be blazing for me.

Do you have a Garmin or Polar or something like that? That is how I've learned to pace myself. I used to run like a little kid..I could run a fast 500m then be spent. That is why I despised running..I never knew how to pace myself. The Garmin has really taught me how to run.

Karen.... Vertigo.  It can happen.  Maybe try taking a Dramamine (sp?) before you swim.  It will help big time.  It is a scary feeling, and it happened to me once when I did an OWS in the ocean for the 1st time.  The next take took the magic pill, and never had a problem after that.

Tony--- That is a great suit. I would recommend trying it out.

That works too, it's a really laid back no worries type of "competition"  Just a good excuse to get some workouts in at race pace.  Also maybe to tease some of the other teamsLaughing

But if you did want to get in on this round you have until the 1st to get in a 400yd swim, 12 mi bike and 5k run.  Or maybe we extend it a week if more people need to get their times in.

You can go in under Workouts.....Set a quick workout, for example....enter the distance 5km..and the time 30 minutes..It shows you what your pace should be(6min/km 10min/mile). It shows your current pace, and the pace needed to get to your goal. There is a virtual partner thing too that is neat and very similar.

Couple of ways you can do this.  I have mine set to auto-lap every one mile.  I also always have the avg pace/lap field up showing my how fast I am running my current mile.  Speed up or slow down depending on how fast I want to run.

My wife doesn't like the average lap pace so she uses current pace to determine how fast she is running right now and speeds up or slows down accordingly.

I guess after many years of running you can figure out your own pace without gps but I haven't gotten to that point yet so the garmin is great for helping me figure out my pace.

Do you feel like you have water in your inner ears?  I used to have that problem and then I started wearing ear plugs.  It totally went away.

I agree with Tony.  I set my Garmin to show Lap Pace, Avgerage Pace, HR and distance.  You should have a reasonable idea of the pace you can hold and then use the lap pace to monitor how you are doing per mile.  This assumes you go in and set up each lap as a 1 mile AND that is important IMO.  If you don't know how to do this, I can send you the directions.

I have mine set up for time, pace, HR, and distance.  I may try to change the pace to pace / lap = mile.  One thing that I notice all the time is that I look down, and I am running a 9.5 pace or so, then when the lap comes up, it shows 10 or 11.  Damn traffic lights!

Well I tried the Synergy suit out at the pool an hour ago and still tired arms after about 500M.  Getting worried that it isn't the suits it is me.  Which sucks because I want to and have to wear a wetsuit due to the temp of the race but obviously don't want it to make the swim harder.

I sent wetsuitrental.com an e-mail to see if they could do anything about it.  The other option is to just rent a sleeveless and deal with the 60 degree water temp...

Team SHI - just posted my 12mi TT - 39:31 which is a little over 18 mph.  I am dissappointed in the results, I was hoping for 20mph.  I need to add some speed work into the mix once a week on the bike.   I think I will have to run that little course about once a month or so to see if I am improving.  I think I accidently found my LT on the bike as well at 160 bpm.

barry, can you not keep one window w/ the same settings you have and then have another window w/ the lap pace/ pace/ heart rate and dist?  i think there are three windows?  btw, wtg on your run today!

Agreed...You need to have the lap set for 1 mile( I'm a km guy though)..Otherwise, your calcs would be off.
f.y.i. for all of us nerdy-types, I've heard that one the new 310(whenever it comes out) that you can track up to 16 different data fields for each event.

Tony,  I have seen several swim instructors at the pool wearing an Under Armour type top when they are standing around in the water instructing - to keep from getting too cold.  And I had a friend wear a sleeveless wetsuit with one of those tops over it, due to the restricted movement issue.  Maybe that is something you could explore.  Just a thought.

According to my MG race calendar I see that Andy is doing a bike race tomorrow, Trevor a sprint, and then on Sunday we have Stan and Jeremy with sprints and Holly with the porta poopy water olympic.   Did I miss anyone?  Best of luck to all our fabulous racers.  Have a great time.  I'll be leaving work early today to travel to the hubby's race.  It was odd watching him pack last night and not feeling the same pre-race anxiety.  He is doing his first olympic of the season (second ever) and set a very aggressive time goal for himself (2:45).  Please send him speed vibes this weekend.

As a treat for all our hard work on our virtual sprint,  I think we've all earned a new piece of equipment.  Be it a new pair of socks or a new bike frame.  Treat yourselves well.  Smile

How did you use the Garmin to help your pacing?  I use the HR  and pace etc, but never fooled with many of the other features.  Do tell.

I am totally anal, but I stop my Garmin when I hit a traffic light.  The other option is you can set "auto-pause" so that when you stop, it does too.  For me, it was the only way to get a sense of pacing.

Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN!
I have a hard time understanding how an RD or Head Referee interprets USAT rules.  I've read and re-read the rule book  but still don't get it.  Here are some examples I've seen lately.
  • Water temp was 82 degrees but the Head Ref said no wetsuits.  (Please don't reply to this with the 78 degree limit to wear a wetsuit as so many people do...this is simply not accurate.)
  • RD announced if you miss your wave you can start w/ the next but the clock starts ticking from when your wave started.  Head Ref over-ruled and said if you miss your wave, you are DQ'ed
  • Athena is 160 and above.
  • Draft Zone specs....I have seen so many variations of this even here on BT its almost funny.

Some may judge these as "ticky tack", such as the Athena Rule, but its still a rule and our rule book is the baseline from which we go forth.  So why so much variation if we have this rule book? I understand Section 1.4 Rules Exceptions and Additions but this hasn't been followed as far as I can tell.

Any thoughts?
