Physically I'm feeling ready. Mentally, not so much. I lost my long time training partner this morning. My 12 yo black lab mix had to be put down this morning. (His picture is on my training log) He woke me up about 4am having a Grand Mal seizure. The seizure lasted almost two hours. By the time we were able to get to an emergency vet, they felt that he had sustained brain damage. Then when they did an x-ray examination on him they found numerous tumors growing in his chest and brain. We made the call to end any potential suffering. He'd been running with me up until this spring when his joints just couldn't take it anymore. So sad to see him so willing to try to follow along, but his body just wouldn't let him anymore. Sorry to hear Scott. As Ernesto said, go race for him. He's in dog heaven chewing a huge bone and following your race. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not a rest day but no points either. 50 minutes of pilates this morning and a 650m swim this evening. I just couldn't get motivated and ended up with horrible form and swallowing pool water so I just cut it short after 20 minutes of simulated drowning! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Drove from Yosemite, through Fresno then on to Sequoia National Park today, just outside Sequoia is the town of Three Rivers and Lake Kaweah. Absolutely huge recreation lake with a swim park area about a mile from our hotel. I've got my wetsuit and goggles with me from the Alcatraz race, so you bet I'm going to head there and get an open water swim in! I swam for about 30 minutes, then drove the shoreline to get an estimate on yardage. Score! I didn't think I'd be able to get any swimming in this week! I just found out the local swim club (youth competitive swimming) is holding an open water competition that has an adult division with a 2 mile and 4 mile open water swim. And it's the weekend after we get home from this trip. Should be fun, I've never actually swam 4 miles strait, it can't be that much harder than 2.4 right? |

![]() | ![]() JBacarella - 2012-06-15 7:14 AM I got dropped. Yep. Gabe and you posted at almost exactly the same time. Rest day for me today, but I still did something traithlony. A family about 10 houses up on the lake I live on are basically all very good triathletes. Mom and daughter almost always age group podium (which is very impressive for the mom since the 45-49 female age is tough). Dad finishes very high in sprints as well. They host an open water swim every Friday at 6 AM, weather permitting. One of them usually trails in a boat. Today that was my job since they were away but the group still wanted to swim. 12 very fast swimmers, perfectly calm lake, beautiful morning. And all I had to do was putt-putt along in my boat drinking a cup of coffee and enjoying the morning. Next time, if I'm not too tired, I will join them and swim even though Friday is usually a rest day. Looks like fun, although they are pretty speedy. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hit two milestones yesterday and didn't realize it until this morning. I have exceeded my totals from last year for swim and run. My total running in 2011 was 437.8 miles in 2012 (year to date) 442.62. My total swimming for 2011 was 13638.83 yards in 2012 is 13638.83. I owe a debt of gratitude to Ernesto and the group for helping me to keep on track, motivated, inspired and focused. I really appreciate your help. I can honestly say that my training would not be where it is today without your help. I have learned a lot and have benefited from my association with you. Ernesto you are a top shelf mentor. Thank you. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great swim today. Did 400 yrd repeats. Normally I swim the 400 @ 8:40 or so. First try today and the clock showed 7:45. I was sure I miscounted the laps so went at it again. 8:00. Finished with 100 intervals (just to get to the 30 min and my point). I know what's the difference. My aerobic capacity (or lack thereof) always forced me to shorten my stroke before, and go to breathing every 2 strokes (left arm/right arm) after 100/150 yrds (unilateral breathing). Recently I decided to pre-empt this by switching my breathing to a 2-3-2-3 stroke rhythm. This, coupled with better aerobic capacity (thanks MAF), allowed me to keep my stroke longer for most of the swim. Even so, I was surprised at the huge time difference. - Jim:S 6/B 8/R7 / Rest Days 1: Total=21; 19:14':32" - Gabe : S 6 / B 7 / R 8/ Rest Days 1 ; Total = 21; 18:55'15" - Chris : S 5/ B 6/ R 6/ Rest Days 3; Total = 17; 15:35:09 - Scott: S:4 / B 5 / R 8/ Rest days 2; Total = 17; 14:06:48" - Barry : S 5 / B 3 / R 9/ Rest Days 2 ; Total = 16 ; 13:32:21 - Jackie: S 6 / B 4 / R 5 / Rest Days 2: Total = 15; 10:48'17" - Mike: S 3 / B 5 / R 6 / Rest Days 2: Total =14: 15:44'15" - Jennie P : S 4/ B 3/ R 7/ Rest Days 2; Total = 14 : 11:56'09" - Scott P : S 4/B 3/R 7/ Rest days 2; Total = 14; 10:06'47"- MarkZ : S 1 / B 4 / R 7/ Rest Days 2 ; Total = 12; 14:07':00" - MatthewS: S 6 / B 5 / R 2/ Rest Days 2 ; Total = 13; 08:57'00" - Ernesto : S 3 / B 4 / R 3/ Rest Days 6; Total = 10 ; 08:34'37" - Rachel : S 3 / B 2 / R 4 / Rest Days 4; Total =9; 19:22'27" - MarkH: S 4 / B 3 / R 3 / Rest Days 0; Total = 10 ; 7:29'00" - JoeP : S 3 / B 5 / R 3/ Rest Day 4; Total = 11; 11:32:56" - Samyg: S 3 / B 3 / R 4 / Rest Days 6; Total = 10; 8:45'49 - Andy : S 2 / B 0 / R 4 / Rest Days 1; Total = 6; 3:52':25" - Mitch : S 1 / B 2 / R 1 / Rest Days 10 ; Total = 4; 3:58':21 PS: added also my rest day tomorrow before my race.
