Joe,
I was already out running the race by the time you posted this. I can't tell you how right you were. I had gotten the advice to take the first run ridiculously slow. I listened and it paid off with another podium finish. I'm working on my race report now. I was especially surprised about the last line in your post, that I would find it just as rewarding and challenging. Dang, you couldn't have been more right!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I needed it this time.

podium and you got to dodge a "crappy" swim. I call that a win win. Nice job!

47 minutes on the bike. I tried my first OWS last night. The lake has not hit 50 F yet. I didn't last 2 minutes. We have some warm temps coming so I hope by this weekend I can swim without hypothermia.

Question for the group. Is there like a hierarchy of triathlon needs similar to maslow's hierarchy of needs? For instance, I feel like I have my basics. Goggles, suit, bike, helmet, run shoes. And I think i've got an upgrade with the clip bike shoes. So what's next on the list or what would be the next level of things I should procure? wet suit, tri-suit, tri-specific bike, hired coach, power meter? Just curious what my next purchase should be so I can look forward to it. What did you get that made a real difference?

Thanks for letting me pick your brains

Somewhat depends on what distance of races you aspire to.

I think for Olympic distance races (and even the once and awhile HIM) you can be just fine with a road bike. If you want to focus on long course racing (HIM and IM) then I would look at a tri-specific bike.

Wetsuit should be of value in any distance of race.

Power meter is the best thing I've purchased from atraining perspective to get stronger on the bike and to manage my race efforts.

Can't recall if you have a triathlon watch?

I race in tri bottom and separate top. However, I've never tried a tri-suit and given how much I like cycling bibs I bet I would love a tri-suit.

Coaching seems like a big investment. I may consider a coaching service if I pursue an IM but would likely still feel that I am disciplined enough and able to research the sport enough that I can get by on my own.

I guess I would order them as follows:

(1) Wetsuit
(2) Tri Watch
(3) Power Meter
(4) Tri-Specific bike
(5) Tri suit
(6) Coach

I would put the wetsuit on the top of this as well but would add a bike trainer (assuming you dont have one) They are great for training when its too hot, too cold, raining or later at night.

Good call...bike trainer should be near top of any list. The workouts you get on the trainer are a majority of the time going to better than riding outside.

forgot goggles for my swim so did tarzan sets and kick with and without flippers. I discovered you can really move with flippers! Also managed a short 6km run before it started to rain.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
