Glad you're finally getting some good swim feedback J!

Kate - how's the energy coming along?

Scott - Did you decide to defer or not?

Keel - How are your orthopedics helping? I'm considering looking into them as my arch is starting to complain (but it might just be needing new shoes which I did order)

Kir - Can't wait to hear more about the bike building adventure.

Leah - Hi! Bike!

Heather - Hows recovery from the race?

Joblin and Lisa... we haven't forgotten about you. We're nothing if not persistent.

So I decided to register for that organized ride this Sunday. Will be doing at least the 45mi option. Figured a change of scenery would be good, and maybe there might be some very gentle rollers as opposed to my very flat normal long bike route.

Can't wait to hear how our Gals do tomorrow!  Good luck ladies!!

Things are going better on my end.  I am moving again!  This weekend I am going to run and do a nice ride.  It is a stressful time for work so I think that is adding to the problem.  I'm eating poorly though.  I need to get that into check.

Have a great weekend everyone!  Can't wait to hear about the race!

Debb - I think it is great you are doing the group ride.  I love group rides.  You can chit chat and it makes you want to ride harder.  Plus it is fun to see some new spost.  Good luck!  Take some picture if you can.

Greetings from Chicago.  By the way, it's windy here.  How does anyone ever keep their hair unmussed?   Last night I had what is perhaps the best dinner of my life at a restaurant called "Everest."   Not inexpensive, but as a traveling treat, couldn't be beat.  (Sorry for the rhyme.)  And I didn't stray too terribly far off the Zone/Paleo path.

I haven't gotten in any workouts today yet.  It's supposed to be a biking day, but no bicycle here.  I am planning on going for a shortish run, but it is kind of cold and, did I mention, windy.  I do intend to get in at least one run along Lake Michigan so I can say that I did and have another "foreign" track on my Garmin.

Happy training everyone.

Are you and Debb going to meet up?  have a fun trip.

Judi - I just read your blog.  Congrats on the finish.  Sorry about the swim.  I know how you feel.  Remember though that it is your first one of the season and that you've made progress from last season!

Keely?  How did it go?

Thanks...Keely doe the sprint tomorrow.  I hope the water is less choppy.  It was the closest I have ever come in thinking about the DNF.  Kid in the canoe kept me going just talking to me.

Oh shoot that was this weekend you are in town? I have that ride tomorrow. Hope your concert is great. You could have borrowed my bike for your ride. Hehe.

Jud and Heather! Tell us all about the race when you get a chance.

I ran almost 9 miles today. Wanted to get to 9 but I followed the schdule and stopped at 1:45 like a good little trainee.

Water temp 66 degrees...warmer than last year. Chop is HIGH.
Kicked, punched and pummeled at the start of the swim then the chop killed me.  Backstroked at least 80% of the race.  Gave serious contemplation to taking a DNF on the swim but a kid in a canoe talked me through the last 500-600 yards.

Bike was the highlight of the day.  Didn't have my legs until aroound mile 10 but I was okay physically and mentally.  Strong headwind with rollers the whole course.

Run sucked.  Desperately needed a portapotty cause I swallowed half the lake on the swim.  Both the systems  nees attention....leg cramps, had to walk a lot of loop 1.  Those finally went away but my feet went numb.  It felt like diabetic neuropathy, pins & needles.  Finally took off my shoes around 3.5 miles and went barefoot the rest of the way.  Wouldn't have been bad but there was a section of gravel road and trail that sucked at the end.

Saw the kid from the canoe as we were leaving and shook his hand to thank him.  If it hadn't been for him I would have taken the DNF.

I wonder if the leg cramping and foot numbness were interrelated to nutrition yesterday.  I ran out on my heed when I mixed the bottles up so they were more watery than usual.   It's the only thing that makes sense to me right now cause I have worn those shoes for bricks without any problems.

Judi - I can't believe you took your shows off.  You are hard core!!  Nothing was going to stop you yesterday once you made it out of the water!  It is odd that your feet would bother you that much.  Was it hotter than usual?  Maybe you got swollen?  Maybe some to the more experienced tri folks will offer something up.

I did a 20 mile ride today with my hubby.  Felt good.  I also signed up for my May race.  It is an OLY.  I think it will be good motivation to keep moving.

No, it was cool and comfortable.  maybe 70 by the time I finished.  Someone suggested to me that I may have tightened up so much on the bike in the wind that all the leg muscles were cramped then couldn't handle the stress of the run.  I did a google search today on numbness of feet in runners.  Most suggested tight shoes or neuromas.    I had adjusted the laces on the yanks a couple times with no luck, that's why I decided to just take them off.

You will get lots of different opinions on cramping, from a) it's a fitness issue, b) you need more electrolytes, and c) nutrition.  I was cramping bad every time on the indoor trainer and started taking a lot of electrolytes and that eased it a lot, so I think maybe electrolytes have something to do with it.  Except that eventually I ran out of the Endurolytes and haven't had any cramping on the bike in a while so maybe it is a fitness issue.  After the LA Tri in October (like several hours later), I was having some bad, bad cramping and was told that what I ate for nutrition during the race was fine, just not enough, and that was the reason for those cramps.  So maybe it is a nutrition issue.

In other words, who knows?

If you ate and drank otherwise during the race, I can't believe that watery or not quite enough Heed is the culprit.  It might have been stress.  Anxiety about how it was all going that caused you to tense up which triggered some cramps.

As for the numbness, I sometimes get foot numbness running or biking and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

And I have to agree, that was seriously hard core,  finishing the run in your socks.

I'm so sorry about your race, Judi.  It sounds like one of those days when nothing came together right.  But, if you had to have a swim leg and a bike leg and a run leg go all screwy, you might as well do it all in one race and get it out of your system.   You know what happened yesterday is not a true measure of what you can do.  The next race will be better.

QUICK QUESTION for all of you.

Do any of you belong to a tri club?  If so, Do you like it?  I'm tempted to join one just for the cute outfits!  What are the pros and cons?

I belong to the LA Tri Club and I am NOT into the club jerseys.  Nevertheless, I do think about wearing one in a race.  The LA Tri people seem to be very supportive of each other and a club jersey would identify me as one of them.  So maybe.  I haven't decided yet.

I have been on very few on the club rides (I think 2 in 1-1/2 years of being a member) and one swim.  The problem is that they never seem to start when I want to go.  I live in the eastern part of the county and most of the events are westside.  I'm also afraid that I'm not a good enough cyclist to keep up on the rides I really want to go on.

The LA Tri Club has a whole lot of training events and if I was on my own and didn't need to be home for any reason, I think I get a lot more benefit from my membership.  But I'm fond of the Chuck Man and will continue to be home most nights.

The race discounts have paid for my membership twice over.  My Bike Marker session and my swim clinic are put on by people associated with the club.  I don't know the hierarchy to know the relationship exactly.

I don't know if any of that will help you decide about your tri club.

I had a terrific time in Chicago.  We really did have glorious weather.  It wasn't particularly warm, but the wind only seemed to be a factor in the morning and late afternoon/evening and so the middle of the day was quite nice.  I went out for a run along Lake Michigan this morning, starting at the lazy time of 10am, and so it was perfect.  I haven't uploaded my Garmin yet, but I think it was just under 5-1/2 miles.

We went to the Art Institute (we lucked out because they were having a Matisse exhibit), the Planetarium and the Field Museum yesterday and I am giving myself five miles of walking!

The program - Trans Siberian Orchestra performing Beethoven's Last Night - lived up to my expectations.  How often does that happen, when you have thought about something for years and finally get to see it?

I have totally slacked off on my biking this past week and have got to do LOTS and LOTS better this week.

That was helpful Leah.  I've been looking at the ones in AZ and there are a good number to choose from.  I like to know some folks at races.  Right now it is my and my bro-in-law but I think we could use help and more structure.  At races the members look supportive of one another.  It is intimidating for sure.  None seem to be a great fit for me though.

If I had more time and energy, I would start my own tri club. I would do a women's club.  I think that would go over well and there isn't one in Phoenix.  There is one in Tucson.  I could also do a Native American group.  We kind of have a start of that now with my race buddies and cycle buddies.

The things I could do if I didn't have to work.

Richmond tri club.  Has lots of good clinics (ie my swim clinic a week or so ago) and group OWS starts soon.  Socially don't do the hangout events cause they're a bit out of the way for me but I enjoy the workouts and support of the club.

Hey guys I hope everyone had a great weekend.

I'm feeling out of it I took a few days off because my girls were sick and then went to friends party Sat night and now I'm holding onto what I hope is just 4 pounds of water weight but ugh. We are going to the local zoo today so I will get to walk a lot and then as long as it's not raining later I think I will sneak out and ride my road bike to try and get back in the groove.

I am interrupting your thread again to bring the following info.

I belong to the LA Tri Club and I am NOT into the club jerseys.  Nevertheless, I do think about wearing one in a race.  The LA Tri people seem to be very supportive of each other and a club jersey would identify me as one of them.

I have mixed feelings about club jerseys.  However, Leah is right -- clothes (even a hat or visor with club name/logo) brands you as a member and kindred spirit and evokes tons of support on course and before/after. Yesterday I did a small local sprint and racked next to a guy in the LATC trisuit (I was NOT in LATC clothes, however).  He told me he was a member for a long time but had G.B. surgery a year ago and was now at 99.6lbs weight loss and although BOP was getting faster and having fun (not relevant to club, but this is a weightloss forum, after all).  We are now Facebook friends.    LATC head coach was racing too (but in his brand-new coaching/racing team trisuit rather than the club kit) and saw that guy in his kit and cheered him on course, then went over, introduced himself, etc.  No product/services sell; he's just a super nice guy and likes to meet all club members. And the support is not just local, either -- I did the Lake Placid bike (not run) in my club jersey and had tons of people from all over comment on it, including one person who asked why there were only a handful of us LATCers on course that day, compared to the Wildflower HIM (answer:  LP is 3000 miles away, WF is 100).

I'm also afraid that I'm not a good enough cyclist to keep up on the rides I really want to go on.

No such thing.  Next time you have one you really want to go on, e me and I will ride next to you the whole way.  I think you just like training alone in your own way.

My Bike Marker session and my swim clinic are put on by people associated with the club.  I don't know the hierarchy to know the relationship exactly.

Swim clinic/bike marker put on by (independent) coaching company owned/headed by founding club member and official head coach to the club.  Club came first, coaching company came quite a few years afterward.  10 years later, there are many other "certified" coaches associated with the club, but this one still gets place of honour due to their almost unbelievable and complete commitment to the tri club, offering literally hundreds of free clinics and support without sending out any "sponsored" email (as allowed by club policy) or other direct solicitation to buy their services.  They usually offer a club discount rate, though.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Judi - at least you know you were hydrated during the run!!  Great job.  I read your race report and thought..I think I may have quit about then.  Plus I have no issue with public urination at this point in my live..I just blame my prostate...or claim that I was European and did not know any better.

I have made the decision to put the half off until September or next year.  I ma asking for trouble trying to train and run for 13 miles with my leg in the shape it is. I really need to strengthen it and lose some wieght before I put on a ton of mileage.  However, my brother just sent me a link to a triathlon in his city (Maple Grove, MN) the end of August and it is a Sprint or Olympic.  So I think I will sign up for that and the family can make the road trip to MN to come watch and hang out with my brother.  So that actually worked out nicely. I am also going to try to fill out a few more races for the summer.

Looks like everyone is getting some quality training in on the weekends.

Kate - joining a tri club is a good idea and I should do the same. There are a large number out here with quite a few just for women.  I wish there was one for just beginners since I really do not like being around the testosterone of some fo the elite athletes you tend to meet out in this neck of the woods.  Maybe I shouldn't call it testosterone since these guys are only 150lbs..  Anyway - find a tri club that fits your personality and just the camaraderie will be worth joining..Oh..and of course the cool team kits are always a plus.

Leah - glad to see you enjoyed Chicago. I love that city..Of course I would have had a combo of Italian Sausage and Italian Beef with red sauce from a street vendor..yum instead of going to a restaurant.

LMAO Scott!  THat's great  Unfortunately it wasn't just a matter of public urination Embarassed  If you know rstocks at all...it is referred to as rstock stop cause he ALWAYS needs to stop mid race to take a healthy dump.  Not enough secluded woods for that one!!

Sorry you have to defer, but you have to train smart and deferring for another year will help you build the miles up and hopefully stay healthy.

Ok I'm in a better mood now I escaped from my house and got a 25 mile ride in on my road bike in 1:33.

Oh and about my race it was good but I had a few slip ups. I ended of finishing my first sprint tri in 1:47:18 which included a .5 mile swim/ 10 mile bike/ 4 mile run and 60 steps up and down the fort.

Swim- .5 mile- in OW was ok except for the fact that I swam most of it with my head out of the water and when I put it down I would go faster but out into the ocean not towards the finish.

T1- this included a long run up the beach to transition. My wetsuit came off fine but my feet were really dirty and then I lost my shirt I needed to change into and I was not going to bike and run in my sports bra. Luckily I had an extra shirt I finally wore and got out of transition.

Bike- This was a 10 mile loop and it was ok except the we had the worst headwind I have ever felt I was avg 13 mph out and 23 on the way back in.

T2- Everything went fine other than getting my socks wet but that wasn't a big deal.

Run- The first half of the run was fine until I hit the fort which is 60 steps up and then across the fort and back down another 60. The problem here is as we ran off the fort we hit the beach and had to run 1 mile on the sand which we didn't expect. Well after running for a few minutes on the sand I couldn't get my heart rate back down under 189/191 with a peak of 201 according to my Garmin. So I had to walk/jog the rest I ended up having an avg hr of 187 over the course of the run.

Finish- As I came up towards the finish there were a few little boys cheering us on and man they helped so much I got chills and found some more energy. I looked back and saw that the person behind me was working hard just like I was and I mentioned to her that my legs were fine to run hard but my heart rate didn't agree. Well as I look at her I realize she and I were transition neighbors and it was her first tri also. So we decided to finish strong together and ran the last .25 mile strong and finished at the same time. I have to say that part was pretty great.

Ok sorry it was so long but whatever. Oh yeah I did find my shirt I had left it at my friends transition while we were getting out wetsuits on together.
