Anyone ever fly with their bike?  I am trying to decide what type of case to buy.  I want to take as little of my bike apart as I can but I also don't want a huge case.  Luckily I am tiny (meaning short) so my bike is tiny.  Any recommendations?

That's great!! Congrats to you and Brendan!
KeriKadi - 2010-02-12 3:30 PMA big day in our house!!!

Much to our surprise during Freshan orientation our son Brendan said he wanted to part of FFA this year.  Even better yet, he wanted to raise a pig.  In October Brendan and Ken spent the whole day waiting for Brendan's turn to choose his pig.  He got a Hampshire pig he named Olivia.  Over the last 4 months he has fed her twice a day, walked her and loved her.  Today was show day.  As a parent I can tell you this was WAY more nerve racking than I ever imagined.  The animals were moved Wednesday night.  Yesterday the mood was light and fun.  This morning it was tense and stressed.  Our son was in the first class and showed his pig at 8am.  We were glad it was early as there are 8 weight classes.  His biggest hope was to make preferred sale rather than go to frezer sale.  With a preferred buyer she goes up for auction and has a chance at being bought by a breeder.

Ken and I were both near tears watching him show as the other kids were eliminated or chosen and Brendan and Olivia seemed to be in the ring for the longest time.  He made the first cut, then the second cut which meant top 10.

Brendan and Oliva got 4th which is HUGE for a Feshman.  We couldn't be more proud.

kcarroll - 2010-02-12 6:31 PMWarning:  Long Post!!!

Wow.  What a Friday.  I had a 7:30 meeting, so I decided to run on the tready at the gym at work.  Roads here are still icy and shoulderless due to the snow.  Not great running conditions in the dark.  So I was out the door around 5:15, knocked off 5 miles, quick shower, got to my desk about 7:15 and my mobile rang.  It was a friend wanting to know if I was home because there was a huge cloud of smoke over my neighborhood.  Needless to say, I shuttled my meeting and took off for home.  When I got there, no way to enter the 'hood.  Fire trucks, police, arson squad you name it.  I was able to get the number of the unit where the fire started and thankfully it wasn't mine, but it was in the next building.  Fire was contained so nothing to do but go back to work, try not to worry and get home as soon as possible.

I live in a townhome community.  Each building has 4 units.  The unit where the fire started is a total write-off.  Nothing left.  Structurally ok, they think, but otherwise a total loss.  The owner splits his time between here and the city and wasn't home.  The other 3 units, including my next door neighbor's have severe smoke and water damage and the entire roof is shot.  No word on the cause yet.    Initial estimates are that none of the 4 will be liveable for at least 6 months, maybe 9.  One of the couples that has a unit in the building is quite elderly and the wife has alzheimers.  My heart goes out to them.  Thankfully, and most importantly, everyone got out.  From what I've been told this afternoon, we have the BEST fire and police personnel.   They did an amazing job today.  We are all so indebted and gratefull.

My house has a *tinge* of smoke odor, but nothing terrible.  The biggest hassle is I suspect I might have to forego the garage quite a bit in the next several months if I don't want to get blocked in.  The end unit of the building affected shares a driveway with me.  It is going to be a hassle and get old.  This is a quiet community and the thought of living next door to 6-9 months of construction is not appealing.  Oh well.  It is what it is.  Again, just incredibly grateful everyone got out.

I think my first glass of wine is fast approaching.  Notice I said first.  There will be a second. Maybe a third.

All for now.  Smokey the Bear "out"

Had a burp that carried up a bit more than air(just a small barf!) so I had to run penalty lap which made my time 9:23.

I'm going to be flying with my bike for the first time later this year.  Thankfully our tri club has bike boxes that we can use, I'll see if I can find out the type for you.  Might be worth checking your local tri clubs to see if they offer something similar, its the only reason I joined ours really

More good news ~ Olivia auctioned for $1800!!!  MUCH more than we were hoping for.  Even better she was bought by a couple that bought several animals and donated them to the Boys and Girls Club of Houston so she will live out many more days Laughing

This past week has been CRAZY and I had a lovely Valentine's dinner with Ken but it is time to buckle down and get the training in.... my race is fast approaching and my training isn't.

How was everyone's Valentines weekend?

All I can say is we had a rough time on our 3 day weekend. Thanks to record snow in Dallas, 12". I know not that bad to the north folks but when your town has no snow plow and freaks at 1" you can get the picture. Our flight out on Friday 6:45 am was cancelled. 6 hours on the phone thrusday night 2 hours friday morning and no help from the airline. Arrive at airport to sit on stand by list for 16 hours and dont get on. Goto my dads house sleep for 4 hours and get on 2 nd flight out on Saturday morning. I promised the wife she would be at the concert. We made the show and then crashed at the hotel. Got up and left at 1:00 pm. Took the Airport shuttle which proceeded to crash into a cab. It wasnt too bad but luckily my face broke my impact into the seat in front of me. We had to walk the last 1/2 mi to the airport. Well it just fit in with the whole weekend. I need a vacation to recover from my vacation.

So my move date is final.  Movers are coming the 23rd or 24th to get our stuff and then off we go.  Found a pretty ok house in Tucson to live in.  It is 3 miles from the most awesome set of mountain bike trails. Perfect spot for when you want to get a quick hour or two in.  And a short ride to Mt. Lemmon for when I want some killer hill workouts.  And I found two community pools that are no more of a drive then what I do now (<15mins) although now I am an outdoor pool like you Texans.  So my training is going to be railroaded a tiny bit but going to try and keep the distruption to a minimum.

Concert was actually pretty good. That Garth guy is a decent entertainer. I am not a big county music guy but he played other music besides his and not just country. I was impressed.

So I just found out that there is going to be a triathlon in April on campus. The swim will be in the pool at our gym and the bike and run will be around Clemson. I am seriously considering doing this (as long as it fits into my school schedule) but now I have a question. There is a 5k the friday after this triathlon that I have already decided to do. It's the Take back the Night run which is in recognition of relationship violence. I really think it is a good cause and want to do it. Would I be ok doing 2 races within 6 days? I mean it's a only a 5k so I think I would be ok but I just wanted to get your input.

If your trained for a sprint you shouldn't have any lingering affects that affect your 5k.  You'll have to decided if your trained enough of course:-)  Or, you can just go into both with an attitude of having fun and not go for pr's and you'll for sure have no problems.

Todd, that is SO something that woudl happen to me.  Were we both charmic .holes in previous lives or something?

Kim- glad you are okay and there wasn't any damage to your townhome!  What a nightmare!  That's the one thing I really hate about living in a condo.

Keri- congrats on the pig!  It sounds... odd saying that, but if you're happy and proud then I'm happy and proud.

Happy Monday everyone.

WOW. Sounds like some crazy/busy weekends.
My wife worked all weekend so I tried to fill it up for my two boys and a couple of their friends.
On Saturday we went to Banff National park and hiked up to the frozen falls and watched the ice climbers do their thing.
Sunday I managed to get in a little run.
It was Family day up here yesterday and there was a bunch of "family friendly" things to do, The local theater opened at 8:00AM and we saw the new/old chipmonk movie for free, then to the Zoo and toured the butterfly pavillion. Then off to The Royal Tyrell Museum, No little boy can resist a trip to one of the biggest collections of Dino bones in the world.
It is only 2 degrees below freezing this morning so I have my bike in the truck and I am determined to FINALLY ride it, I've been looking at it in my basement for the last 2 months and today is the day, as long as the snow holds off.

Way to get after it in the freezing weather.
