Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED Asalzwed - 2013-04-02 2:56 PM I have a few little pre marathon questions. 1. I'm going to be doing quite a bit of traveling in the next few weeks (pre and post marathon) Should I get some compression socks? Does it really matter which type I get? I am not going to run in them so I have no need for "performance" types (whatever that means) but it's a little hard to decide when the spectrum is from like $10 diabetes socks all the way to $60-$70 CEP versions. 2. How careful do I need to be about the amount of walking I do while site seeing? I plan to spend as much time on my rear doing some R&R (and going to a Red Sox game) the day before but how about the entire week before? I need this spelled out a bit for me. This showed up in today's email: Limited Time Offer Coupon code SOMF4 is valid for purchases of any Purple or Baby Blue Marathon Socks, Calf Sleeves and Low socks in our store.* Don't wait, inventory is limited, and this offer expires April 30, 2013. * For each pair of Purple and Baby Blue Marathon Socks purchased during the month of April, PRO Compression will donate $1 to the following organizations: Purple for Team in Training and Baby Blue for Train 4 Autism. I'm not saying you need em, but they are available if you go that route. I wonder about the science behind the compression stuff. I have a pair that I wear on longer runs, and post longer run, but I'm still not sure on the science of it all. I *think* it helps, so there, it's worth the same as many things I post here. |

I think he might, but he would have to join a gym first--I may suggest that once he is released. Thankfully, my 24 hour fitness is near their house, not terribly expensive, and their pool is kept pretty clean. We shall see. Glad everything went OK with your dad, Kate. Pool walking sounds like a great suggestion if only you can get him to agree! I hear ya on 'making little changes' that would help (sorry for the pathetic paraphrasing) but what may seem little to you or I is a big deal to the person trying to make the change. Add in his pain and conditions and it becomes tougher because these, although valid issues, can also be used as excuses. It's a fine line to walk, but I wish that you can help him arrive at a solution. |

Master 1890 Gig Harbor | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED TriAya - 2013-04-02 9:02 AM Clipless pedals transfer pressure better because your foot is locked in and the bike shoe sole is stiff. Upstroke has nothing to do with it (power simply isn't generated then) nor with running off the bike. The mental imagery or physical feeling of a locked-in circular stroke usually means you are "unweighting" the rising foot well so that the downward-pushing foot isn't having to propel the bike AND lift up the weight of the other foot. Tri bikes are better for running off the bike because your position on them decreases wind resistance, and you therefore use less energy to go the same speed as you would on a road bike. While this may be true, it is also true that the tri bike uses your hamstrings more than a road bike, therefore saving some of the quads for the run. Whether you are just "unweighting" the back foot, or actually pulling up with it (which engages the glutes)...the end result is the same; you are not utilizing as much energy from the quad muscle to push down the pedal on the downstroke. Saving energy in all ways possible (efficient pedal stroke AND aero dynamics) is beneficial for the run. This article on BT specifically states that: "The forward position (of the tri bike) requires more energy from the hamstrings when pedaling. Hopefully this will conserve some energy for the quadriceps when the bike leg is over and it’s time to run. We also can’t overlook the aerodynamic benefits of an efficient aero position." I notice my hamstrings get a lot more work when I am in Aero for a long time. That is my understanding, and experience. |

I wear them almost nightly. No experience with #2. |

Master 1890 Gig Harbor | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED kgore - 2013-04-02 12:01 PM I just received the update from my mom. Dad made it through surgery with no issues. They said that he has only minor heart disease, with very little blockage. They are concerned by the large amount of fluid around his heart and lungs, so they are keeping him for at least one night, maybe two. Thats the good part---They want him to get more active to get rid of the fluid, BUT, due to the diabetes, he has some major foot issues happening, as in swelling, and a great deal of pain. He can't put his feet up, as it hurts his chest, and then his feet get tingly. He doesn't want to move around because then it hurts his feet. So I am curious as to what the docs will tell him to do...I was thinking he can at least get a bit active by moving around his upper body--(Hand-bike thingy????), I don't know, Its best left to better minds then mine probably. Sadly, its most likely easier to get him to change his eating habits than it is to get him active; the least amount of pain, and he refuses to do anymore....Sorry to whine, but to know how little it would actually take him to get better, and yet he doesn't want to even try cause "it hurts" (this isn't new, he has been like this for 20+ years), it just makes me sad. I HOPE this wake-up call really does flip a switch, he can really drive me up a wall, but I am not ready to say goodbye just yet. Thanks again pod for letting me vent. Glad to hear the good news, and sorry to hear about your dad...being powerless to change people can be very frustrating. Wishing you (and your father) nothing but the best. |

For getting him more active it's gotta be something that he enjoys...really or he won't do it. Unless they offer some kind of physiotherapy at the hospital as an outpatient... The pool is the best probably as it's such low impact. Goodness a stubborn father whatever next...? Good luck with whatever happens. |

I told him that last night. That, and also if he needed a new heart, he should totally go all exotic, like for a baboon heart, as then I would be uniquely qualified as a zookeeper to take care of him; he said he would prefer a gorilla! In completely random news, my ex-mother-in-law was Baby Fay's chief nurse. Dude...I always forget you were married. |

Ran for 19 minutes (1.63 miles) and ran the whole time. 3. Bike stuff is up on eBay. Right now it's up to $870 or so, which is about 1/3 of the purchase price of the new bike. |
