Anybody wondering if LP is considering wave starts... or something to deal with the mass swim start issues?

What issue's have they had, Fred?

Maybe (probably) I'm wrong ?

Likely. I think the only point at which WTC will alter the swim start for all IM events will be to address drafting on the bike. Swim wave starts would be the best way to combat that as the fields grow. Otherwise, get ready for swim carnage. I've never found it too bad in AZ, which has a very wide start, or Kona, which although wide, never relents as everyone stays together the whole way around due to the quality of the field. The thing with contact for those worried about it is, don't worry about it. Be prepared to be bouncing off bodies. Keep your head up to anticipate contact. When contact occurs, allow yourself a moment to gather yourself back together BUT DO NOT STOP SWIMMING. Swim slower with your head above water, but don't just stop because someone else will run into you.

PennState - 2010-03-24 7:34 PM I should add that the swim is very crowded, violent with the 2,200... so logically I thought ironman as a corporation might have a plan for the extra racers. Maybe (probably) I'm wrong ?

This is top of mind b/c you swam with Andy this am, isn't it?!!!  I say, bring on the combat.  Let's go.

(or start wide this year to see if it's any different).

maybe. Or maybe because it is a big issue for LP 2010. Who knows?

where are you going to start this year?

I'm probably crazy, but that mass start gives me chills (in a good way). I'm not a strong swimmer by anyone's standards--and I'm totally looking forward to experiencing the insanity!

Call me crazy, but I'm really not freaking out about my first IM.  I FREAKED for my first HIM, finished okay, crossed the finish line with a smile and said "If I can train as consistently for my first IM as I did my first HIM I'll have no trouble"...

JoshKaptur - 2010-03-24 9:07 AM I am also doing Harryman as my tuneup for LP... now I just need to go register.

Register now to make certain you get a spot.  The combined field for the Olympic and HIM is 400.

I know!  Part of me keeps hoping it will sell out so I'll be forced to do the Kinetic Half in VA (closer to me, cheaper, more people I know doing it, etc) instead.  Harryman was my black-bear alternative... but life is complicated down here so I'm thinking the simplicity of a semi-local race (I live in the DC area) would be better.

Plus if you're in my AG I don't want to do Harryman with you

Are you thinking of doing the Harryman half or Olympic?  The reason I ask is because the Half is absolutely brutal!! I've heard elite guys say it should be called a 3/4 Ironman instead of a Half.  And I know cause I did the Olympic, and a flat HIM is easier than the Harryman half!!  The bike is just BRUTAL!!

I'm actually more worried about the Harryman half than IMLP.  I've stated this two people who have done both races, and they concur that it's not crazy to be more worried about Harryman.

Having said all that (I love that Curb Your Enthusiasm episode - having said that...)  your training looks good and you would do fine at Harryman, you just have to be mentally prepared for a tough, tough day.  Two years ago only two guys went barely sub 5 and the majority of the field finished in 6+ hours, with 25% of the field finishing in 7+ hours!!  That's absurd!!

Best of Luck in whatever choice you make.

Thanks for the love... you must have forgotten to check my swimming

My first HIM was Savageman, so I know a bit about brutal bike courses.  Did that one at 210 pounds too, meaning I was gravitationally challenged - snuck in just under 7 hours and that was good enough to win the clydesdale division!

Most of my hesitancy about Harryman is just the logistics considering where I am and some stuff in my life right now.  Oh and now I'm racing against my age, not my weight   But there's actually something inside of me that LIKES courses that freak people out.

I will be starting right behind JenN so I can follow her pink toes.  Then smack her on the butt as we cross the timing mats into T1 as a "Thanks, See you later".

Now if I told you... everyone would know, so I'll keep it a secret

I'm getting to know you....and I have a prediction.  And I predict what you are thinking today is not what will end up being the case once you're in that water....

It's good to be excited... there aren't a lot of people who have done the race before who are excited about the swim for whatever it's worth... except JenN

Yes!!!  Be excited!!  My favorite part of this entire race is the swim!  You have never experienced anything like it.  It is exactly like what it looks like in the pics & vids and it is so badazz!  It's just like this epic thing you will never experience at any other race.  And you can get out of the water saying, HOLY CRAP THAT WAS AWESOME!  It's just the greatest start to the day if you have the right attitude about it.

Tri Tops have a remarkable resemblence to "wife beaters" don't they? I must find one in white so I can look like the guys on "Jersey Shore". (just kidding!!)
