Master 1779 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread ballyard7 - 2010-10-21 2:21 PM I'm just trying to stay positive....I've been battling IT band issues caused by weak hips for a month and a half now. I have been going to the chiropractor and the PT multiple times a week. Along with doing the roller, stretching and hip strength exercises. I am going to get a cortisone shot on monday before I leave so hopefully that gets me through at least the first 15-20 miles of the run. Luckily I dont have any issues on the swim or bike due to the IT band. I have no doubt I can run a decent marathon if my IT band stays at bay. It may be a 15 mile run with a hobble to the finish. X2. I've been more concerned with getting to the starting line than the race itself. Up until yesterday I wasn't even sure that I would be able to do the race. Yesterday I started back on the bike after a week off. I haven't run (on land) for over 2+ weeks. Packing and making race lists haven't been at the top of my to do list. Like you I spent most of my time at ART, rolling, stretching, icing, icing, and trying to remain positive. Keep it up your recovery plan and hopefully the ITB will settle down before the race. I'd been counting on a good run split at IMFL this year. Now we'll just have to wait and see what the days brings. |

Member 36 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I've been battling a tight IT band since April, stretching, resting etc but its still there. I can run for 5mins with no problem then its there, stop running-self massage, then away again and its there all the time in the background, not bad enough to make me quit but enough to slow me down. Did my longest run last Sunday with it, a half marathon, managed to get around in 1:46, 14 mins slower than normal. So its going to be slow and ugly in Panama Edited by Pebble 2010-10-22 7:16 AM |

Member 49 Toronto | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread it's always a good time for a new bike, a race wheels. Providing you can get the fit real close to what you're currently used to, you should be able to use at IMFL. At least I would. It's taken me about 10 riding hrs, in a trainer, to get my bike set after having to replace the entire front end due to the broken stem. My Bike is back in the shop for it's last sleepover, final checkup, cable adjustments etc... |

What kinda idiot buys a new bike now?!? Kidding, I say go for it as long as you can get a ride or two in before the race. |

The atmosphere was awesome and as that last athlete came through, it was amazing. Moving! Make me kinda want to finish close to midnight! (I know I know, be careful what you wish for.) I've come in the last 40' of the race the last two Ironman races I've done, really not the place I'd want to be but agreed the finish line is electric. You are alone in the dark for hours, with the goal of getting to the finish line, then you start hearing the noise of the finish line, it draws you knowing that yes you will make it and soon you will accomplish what you set out to do a year ago. The noise, crowds, and excitement continue to grow as the finish line draws nearer, then all the sudden from pitch darkness you get closer to the finishing chute, music is loud, crowd is huge, and there are bright lights, and it is hard to see....you go from total isolation to this amazing fun party finishing line area what you have craved to get to for last year..and then you cross hopefully hearing Mike R. hear you say " Kathy Graves you are an Ironman". It is such a change of environment, light and noise level and emotionally but for most who finish in the last hour something didn't go as planned so there is some disappointment mixed in with the pride of finishing. They have IM folks out on the run behind the last runner advising them how much time they have to make xxx cut off quite a bit of pressure to keep up the pace. |

May have learned to "respect the distance"...or may have made a fool of us all for training for a year My money is on the former, but we shall see |
