rrrunner - 2012-12-12 2:20 PM I feel ya Jo. My boys had each other but I always felt the working Mom guilt. I still wonder "what if" I'd stayed home.

Just do what you can do. BTW, I hated "field day" too.

Yeah it's a double whammy being the only child.  BUT as i explained to her last night, I had siblings but not close in age so they weren't my playmates.  My mum made up for it by having my best friend over to play twice a week and I went to hers once a week.  I had another friend and we alternated each week one play date a week.  I also was in the Girl Guides and did Ballroom and latin American dancing.

I don't ever think 'what if' I stayed home - because I would be a basket case, I did it for the first 11months and was sooooo depressed, just not my thing.  I do think 'what if' we had another kid....not an option now.

She would dearly like a dog, as would I - we haven't managed to convince DH yet - but sooo tempted to get one anyway...

I have a brother and we did not play at all.  He is about three years younger than me.  We tormented each other.   As you said, having a sibling is not a guaranteed playmate.

Ok sent the enquiry for girl guides off - it's just around the corner, monday nights 6-7.30 perfect.  I think she'll get something out of that for a few years.  It's very teamy which is what she likes so long as a ball isn't involved!

I think from next term she also can be involved in more after school activities.

You manatees rock.

Jo, we have two fairly non-athletic girls. Both did band, one did girl scouts, they were involved in theater in HS, one did NJROTC. There may be other options that are not sport related. Keep your ears and eyes open, as I'm sure you will. Approach it like training, ie plan, think, try different things, etc. It is tough at her age, the options may not be as vast as they are a little later in life.

Jo, so glad that the second half of the day was better for you! Great job getting A all activitied up.

JoGo, thanks for the post.  Very thoughtful.

Felicia, sorry to hear about your sister.

Allen, Yanti is in Australia after an IM attempt.  She got within 10k of the finish and did not make the time cutoff.  Are you on Facebook?  She posted some pictures there.  I think that the album is set to "public" so maybe this URL will work for you -- https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10101230386222975.2847218.3412897&type=1

Kirsten, nice job getting that workout in.  I know that when we had Hannah, she would kiss me while I tried to do planks.  Very distracting!

Salty, bad tracks.  BAD TRACKS!

Hi all. Quickie post. Been thinking of you all even though i have not been posting. Maintaining base fitness level right now with boot camp and one or two runs, but so busy at work i just can't find the time to get more in or even keep up online.

Just read through the last 3 pages of 'stuff'. See the group has it's usual mix of angst and fun. Hope you are all doing well and are looking forward to the festivities. Weather is a little cool here in the UK. Everything very pretty covered in a heavy frost right now.

Haven't seen a post by Yanti. What has she gone and caught now???

Will try to keep up a little more. Love and kisses,

your favourite frog xxx

Good to hear from you.

If you only read through 3 pages, you have missed a lot.

Maybe we should put together a clif note version for you.

I'll start:

  • Yanti had a little race called Ironman on Sunday.
  • Some railroad tracks jumped out of no where and fought with Salty's bike.  She is okay and lived to run a half marathon this weekend. Bike is still healing.
  • There is a 30 day jogo challenge to move your body every day for 30 minutes in December

Anyone else want to add to this to help Allen catch up...

Yes!  I did band, Brownies (but not girl scouts), no ball sports whatsoever.  We lived in Iowa when I was going to start middle school.  Someone said, "What are you going to go out for next year?"  I had to think quickly.  I had to go out for something that did not involve balls or any kind of coordination.  I replied, "Track."

Band is great!  Anything where there is social bonding.  Individual sports like swimming and track are okay, but again, the team work and learning to work with people for a common goal, is so important with only children.  Trust me on this one.  I am 48 years old and just now learning how to deal with conflict and reaching goals.  I still tend to not rely on anyone, ever.  I never learned from siblings how to resolve conflict or work together.  It has affected every aspect of my life.  Communication is crucial for an only child to learn, and you only get that from group socialization and working toward a common goal.  Track and swimming were what I went into because I was afraid to be part of a team.  Please steer your daughter toward groups that have to work together, not individual sports.

Good  day Manatees!

Well I woke up with the cold in full force, feeling like my face was going to explode off my head (or maybe wishing it would). So, in true triathlete style, I googled to see if I should go to Masters with a bad head cold. Threads on both BT and ST popped up and both gave a resounding, don't go. So I didn't. I still plan to get in my JoGo time, just not sure what it will look like. A run if I'm up to it later, or maybe just walking the dogs or some core work.

Of course the first thing I did, after I sent off an email to my boss, was to read through the Manatee thread emails. Some interesting conversation stemming from Jo's post about Artemis.

Janyne, I don't think I knew you lived in Iowa. I was born there but my parents moved to Colorado when I was 2. We have a lot of family there so I spent a LOT of summers there as a kid.

Allen, good to hear from you!!!

As for the sibling talk, I have two sisters and one brother. As a kid we all played, once in high school I spent more time with my older sister, now I talk most with my brother and, more often, my brother's wife.

Now I'm off to look at those FB photos from our Yanti-ness.

I saw the thread in TT where someone asked about Spinnervals vs. Sufferfest and it seemed that Sufferfest was the resounding winner. I see that the videos are pretty inexpensive. Have any of you tried them? Which ones? Do you have them on your computer?

Pheeeeeew. Nothing quite like hard core training starting a few weeks before Christmas. Tons of family coming into town for our annual Christmas party and somehow I have 4 friends who have birthdays in those two weeks. I wandered around downtown last night looking for this super secret speakeasy that has no signage (isn't prohibition over?) and then got a taste of the phrase "No, I can't. Marathon training started" so that I could make it to the gym at 10 pm for my second session. I'm tired already! But excited.

Is this worth doing? I don't know anything about it. I'm sorry. I am a tri-failure. It sorta seems like fishy USAT marketing. But I dunno.
