I want to stay around too.  I've done some soul searching in the past week or so and set myself some new positive goals.   I start Zumba tomorrow night and I also found myself a running coach/club. I got the deal through Zozi.com. 50% off. So it's 6 weeks of coached running - once a week - for $50.  The people that run it have a good reputation so I'm going for it.   I've been avoiding life in general since I got back from Scotland, post trip blues I think..but I can't sit around feeling like a sad sack for ever, I need to get moving and start doing stuff. Always makes me feel better.

I signed up for 2 more races too. Mud run in June and a half marathon on May 5th! Eek.  It was only $35 though. See, I'm all about cheapness. Can't deny I'm Scottish. lol
Mud Run, I'm dying to do one of those.

Wow the last 3 months have flown by!!! Thanks to all who have contributed and inspired me to keep going.  It really means a lot.  I would like to keep in touch as well and will keep checking in regularly.

As for my goals, I am still keeping at them.  I have not had a race yet this year so can't tell if I am improving. I am right on schedule with my HM training have 1 month left and will be doing my longest run ever tomorrow at > 9 miles. I lost 6 of the 10 pounds I wanted to lose (but have gained 3 of them back due to vacation).  I am so ready to see if all the work has paid off!

Good luck to all the McFuzzies - I wish you the best and hopefully I can keep in touch! Also, Mike thank you so much for facilitating and mentoring this great group - we wouldn't be here without you!

This has been a wonderful group, I've really enjoyed giving and receiving so much support, its helped A LOT to keep logs that I know might be looked at by McFuzzies. I will continue checking in with your logs to keep in touch and will check in here too.

New Goals: I decided today to sign up for a 5k in May. My goal is to run 8:00min miles. My last 5k (in a tri) I did in 8:20min miles -after a swim bike so it should, in theory, be doable.  This will be good training for my first sprint tri of the season, also in May.

My other goals are:

swim a mile in 35min

continue ramping up my tolerance for biking

lose 5 pounds by the end of April

June- begin doing brick workouts

Its been a pleasure everyone, Steph, your post is really lovely, thanks for that. Josh, I heard about that accident on the news, its terribly sad. Mike, thank you for being our leader!

Hello beautiful people, congrats to all who completed races this past weekend. I completed my very first marathon on Sunday, which for quite a feat, the finish line was absolutely gorgeous. The first three months of the year have been really good but the next three months are going to absolutely golden. Stay true to your calling everyone, stay focused on the dream and never take no for answer when yes is ringing in your heart. Wink

Raced indoor/outdoor this morning at Purdue Univeristy.  Sprint distance, indoor swim then ran outside wet and barefoot into the 33 degree morning air to suit up for a chilly bike ride, then a slightly warmer run.  Took 2nd in my division.  Here is a link to the race report.

Do any of you ever experience a numbness in your foot (toes specifically) when you are riding the bike?  If so, is this natural – or do I need to change something?

Thanks

Might as your bike fitter at the local bike shop to check your cleat position for you. Or ask what else might cause that.

Are you sure you've got the right size shoes?  What pedals are you using?

No, it's not natural to get numb toes when you ride.

Happened to me a lot last year when I first got my shoes.  Asked my training partner and he told me that he had it to, and he had to remember to keep his heels down.  When I started to pay attention I realized that I was pointing my toes down at the bottom of my pedal stroke.  Once I started keeping my feet more flat or parallel to the ground the numbness went away.

May or may not be the same issue for you, but you may just want to try paying attention on a ride or two and see if it helps.  BTW I would only start having trouble after about 40 minutes or so.  Did not start right away.

What type of pedal do you have?  I had some problems with numbness and pain in my toes and switched to Look pedals from SPD. gave a wider point of contact.  Not all the pressure in one small area.  Also can try moving the cleat on your shoe further back.  Of course that will effect other areas of bike fit so you may have to move the seat as well.

Thanks for all of the responses,  this group is really a great help.  My pedals are Shimano Ultegra.  I just had a bike fit where my cleats were moved forward.  But, I had this problem before and thought it was just part of the "experience" of training.  Now that I know it is not, I will have it checked out.

Thanks

I've had my cleats moved, but I also wear thin socks. It's very important to keep your feet flat (the heels downish). If you are constantly stomping and standing on the pedals you'll hurt your feet. Learning to "spin" is such an advantage. Make circles!

I second this.  In one of my spin classes the instructor said the same thing...if you're toes get numb make sure you are keeping your heels down and foot parallel to the floor.

I had an amazing swim today...so amazing it was like an out of body experience or something!  Even sitting here now I don't believe that I swam like that earlier today.  Before, the longest I had swam straight freestyle was 200 before I had to stop and rest, then I could repeat that once more before I was done and couldn't do it anymore.  Today, I'm not sure what clicked or what happened but I swam 900 freestyle straight through no breaks and even at 900 I felt I could go longer but I stopped because I was so excited I wanted to get out and tell someone.  I randomly ran into my husband on the way home from the gym which never happens and I actually cried when I told him...that's how excited I was! : )  I felt like a big dork and I'm sure he thinks I'm completely crazy but when you've been trying to accomplish something for 8 months and it finally comes to you it's a great feeling.  I have many of you to thank for that too, all your tips and encouragement.  Hope I can do it again.  Now I'm super stoked for my tri in June...I want to fast forward time and do it tomorrow!!

Oh and my time was about 17min.  I know before it would take me 18-20min. to do 600m but that was because I had to alternate from freestyle to breaststroke which is much slower for me.  So Yay!!
