It's only been a few days, but I do feel different. One of the drills today was counting strokes for 25 yds. I did 24 (total left and right arm). Wondering what others counts are? Sounds like swim golf: Count total strokes and time to go 50 meters and add the two together, the lower the number the better. I average 17-18 strokes per 25 and going slow and smooth i do the 50 in about 60 seconds slow for a total of 94-96, if i push the 50 hard the lowest i have gotten was 74-75, same stroke count with the 50 in about 40 secs. I have swam with people that get down around 55-56 pushing it, and that is scary fast. The object is to get as low as possible in stoke count without giving up time and do it consistantly. I would be content right now with a repeatable 75 over a course of 800-1000 meters. On that note, i start my swim training tonight, it has been a couple of weeks since i hve been in a pool and where i used to just grind out 1600 meters in about 35 mins, tonight forward will be mostly all drills to make my swimming more efficient and hopefully bring that time down. |

Extreme Veteran 552 Minnetonka Beach, MN | Subject: RE: Aikidoman's Group - FULL! Swim golf is a great drill! Sort of something that you can incorporate into other drills. Typically, I am in the 26-28 range for strokes per 50 at 0:35 - 0:45 depending on the drill. But the focus on strong catch and pull and maintaining velocity through the entire cycle. It has really helped me in the longer distances... |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Aikidoman's Group - FULL! I agree with the others. Swim golf is a good drill to practice gliding and using a full pull AND it's fun. I can swim under par most of the time in a 25 yard pool. 23-24 strokes and 45 seconds... Granted at my 'length', I have the advantage of a long pull... When I start to get tired on longer sessions, I remember this drill and focus on a LONG pull and good glide... It helps relax me. This is also my visual when I want to go fast. I focus more on a long powerful pull, than a fast turnover. Edited by Aikidoman 2009-01-20 12:37 PM |

Member 51 Omaha, NE, Nebraska | Subject: RE: Aikidoman's Group - FULL! I was hoping to start going to the pool this month, but there is no way I'm getting in an outdoor pool (even if it is heated) when it's 40* outside. I definitely don't miss Nebraska in that respect! |

Slower Than You 9566 Cracklantaburbs | Subject: RE: Aikidoman's Group - FULL! Ahhhh, one tennis season finished, another only halfway through... Man, this whole having-a-social-life nonsense is getting in the way of my training plans. That said, I WILL put in some pool time tomorrow. I need to really ramp up my cycling intervals, my time trial is a short 3 weeks away! I figured out three "destination" races for this year, so I can race and take a long weekend to visit friends too. Ballin'. |

Not blazing by any means, but I was happy!!!!! that's fast to me. That's my best too (I just round it to 1:17). But that was a full out sprint with about 60 seconds rest after a long workout. I needed a rest... I should try one fully rested after a 300-400 warmup... Nah... |

That sounds like a long time. I would guess your either in great shape or the intensity was too, low. I'm no expert. |

well it certainly isn't the first cardio wise... i was averaging 100rpm after about 10 minutes.. i'm slow to start because i have big legs with prior muscle tears so i'm very careful about warmups.. |

No idea but I sometimes have runs or rides where my heart rate is much higher than normal. I guess you have just experienced the opposite. The problem with using HR is that it is affected by outside conditions such as temperature, humidity, time of day you train, tiredness and your general health. I use it as a guide but tend to use how I feel on the day more than HR. As long as you felt alright and got what you wanted from the workout I wouldn't worry about it. |

Slower Than You 9566 Cracklantaburbs | Subject: RE: Aikidoman's Group - FULL! I usually pick a CD and blast it over the sound of my wind trainer. I finally bought some headphones that work with my Musiq phone (it has the smaller 2.5mm jack), so now I can run through my mp3s. First swim in SIX MONTHS today. It was somewhat humbling, but an excellent starting point for a great year. |
