CraigT - 2009-01-12 2:33 PM I have another thrilling week of running on treadmills, riding on trainers and hopefully making it to the pool at least once.  We average like 72" of snow a year, well we are already here for the year.  In the summer, the place I live is like triathlon heaven with living on a lake and wide open country roads for biking and running.  In the winter....not so good unless you are into ice fishing which I am not.
Can you do any crosscountry skiing? I had a friend in MN and he said the only way he kept his sanity/conditioning was winter sports, and he did cc skiing when possible.

There are some really good cross country ski areas very close to my house but I have never tried it.  Maybe I will have to give that a go sometime.

We slipped to page 2!

I took an unscheduled day off.  I'll do my planned workout tomorrow.  I decided that it was more important to use my time to visit my Grandma in the hospital and submit my Master's thesis proposal to the IRB than try to squeeze in a crappy workout.  I was supposed to swim AND bike today but I would have had only time for one.

Chafing! Despite Chamois butt butter (body and shorts) prior to the bike workouts, I'm having some issues I haven't had road riding; probably because the full hour is on the saddle without breaks except for a brief stand during rest intervals. In past winters I'd go to a spinning class or use the gym's life cycle bike but this year's plan is to use trainer for am workouts. Advice appreciated.

Certainly way more important to deal with those two issues first!  Good luck with your thesis and I am hoping your Grandma is ok!

I wouldn't worry about the missed workouts, life happens!

The only 2 things I can offer that you haven't already tried is to possibly try a different pair of shorts or make sure you have a cooling fan or two to get rid of some of the sweating.  Other than that, I'm not sure.

Ok folks! A little slow getting going this morning!

How is everyones training going this week?  Looking at your logs, you all seem to be working hard and getting through the typical issues without any problems!

Was scheduled for a day off but I biked for an hour since I missed my workout on Sunday.  Short swim and a 1 hour run tomorrow. This has been a bike heavy week so it will be my first since my disaster of a run on Saturday, (hopeing for a better time!).  Nice job everybody, I know it's tough getting it done when it's freezing outside!

Got in an hour on the stationary bike and 30 minutes on the treadmill.  Nasty, nasty weather here today.

A year and a half ago when I started working out I started with 15 minutes on the elliptical three times a week.  Now, after an hour an a half of good cardio I still feel like my workout is less than it should be.  No matter how tired I am it just never feels like I've done enough.  Does anyone else feel that way?

And while I'm asking...  anyone suffer from Sleep Paralysis?  "Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the body paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully conscious, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger."  It seems like it happens more often when I've had an exceptionally hard workout (like after riding a fast century).  It's happened off and on since I was in high school.  I'm really getting sick of it.

Wow that sounds frightening.  So how long do you lie there before you regain motor control?  How often does this happen?

Wow that sounds frightening.  So how long do you lie there before you regain motor control?  How often does this happen?

I'm not sure how long it lasts, time is pretty distorted.  I'd guess a few minutes.  I'm usually able to shake a leg or arm if I try hard enough, and if I can wake my wife up she knows to shake me awake.  Occasionally I can open my eyes and look around without waking up.  Most recently I thought I was screaming, and I did wake my wife.  She said I was groaning loud enough to wake her.

It is terrifying.  Even if I tell myself I've been through it many times and that I know everything will be OK, it still really freaks me out.  I wake up with a rapid pulse, sweats, heavy breathing (I know there's an easy joke in there, try to refrain).  And if it happens once it will usually happen again when I try to go back to sleep.

It's been happening more often in the last month or so.  I understand that a lot of people go through it once or twice when they're young (my wife did when she was six), but it usually ends when one reaches their 30's.  Lucky me.  50 and getting worse.  Usually once a month or so.  But twice already in January.

I didn't mean to get all into it, but I wondered if maybe increased physical activity had an effect and if any of you guys go through this.

I know what you mean about the workout perception.  Last year for the off season I did a high volume, low intensity program.  Most weeks 10 - 12 hours.  This year 5 - 7 hours and I feel like a slacker at times.  Especially through the holidays when the pool was closed.  But, if you are following the plan you have chosen to the best of your ability, nothing to feel guilty about.  Too easy to over train and get injured.

As far as your sleep issue, I had never heard of it until you wrote about it.  Definitely sounds scary.  Have you ever checked out the sleep disorder clinics?

Sorry I wasn't around much yesterday.  This cold is kicking my butt more than most.  I do ok with a head cold, but this one has settled in my chest.  Spending the day resting yesterday I am sure helped, but still struggling with it.

So anyone have any big plans this weekend?

Nothing big planned for my weekend.  I have my daughter's swim meet tomorrow morning, she is 10 and is in an age group swim club.  Probably stay in most of the rest of the weekend as temperatures are hovering around 0.

I have to show off my great deal that I got last night.  Nobody in my family would understand but I was quite excited to snag this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200296974547&category=2918&_trksid=p3907.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D15%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D54

I know its probably a little risky to buy a wetsuit without trying it on but I figured at that price if it doesn't fit, I will have no problem selling it for what I paid.

Since Santa brought me a brand new Garmin 305, I am going to sell my 205 as I no longer need it.  I had one person that was looking for a used one but they ended up buying a new one before I was ready to sell.  I am going to put this on in the classifieds but I thought I would give the group first shot if anyone had an interest.  Its a Garmin 205 which means no heart rate monitor but it does have the full GPS capability.  I have had it for 2 years with zero problems.  It works great.  I have all the stuff that comes with it, cradle, cables and the software.  I will sell it for $75 shipped.  Most of the used ones I see on Ebay are over $100.

Sleep Paralysis: I haven't heard of it but I do know someone who managed a Sleep lab; will contact her today. Paralyzed but awake is horrifying. Hope I can find out something. If she doesn't know she can ask one of the sleep lab docs.

This Sunday is Houston/Aramco marathon and half. Hope to get some shoes at Expo today. Last year bought my Asics brand at $40 less than retail so snatched up two pair. With size 14 they are tough to find without ordering. I'm planning on the half marathon as fun run...kept the OS plan all week, will skip bike workout tomorrow; just a short run. Wishing everyone a safe weekend out there, especially you frigid folks up north.. minus 17 in Chicago...OMG !!

I upgraded two months ago from 205 to 305. I also will be selling mine. I bought the 205 a year ago for $60 from a fellow triathlete who also upgraded to 305....its a trend. I like the 305 a lot but I wish the screen font was a little larger or bolder....AARP vision I guess.

I wish Garmin would see the potential market for triathletes and make the next version (505 maybe) waterproof.

I lobe my 305 but it's a pain putting it on in T2.  I end up wearing my Timex Ironman on one wrist during the swim and the Garmin is mounted to the bike.  In T2 I grab the Garmin off the bike and now have two watches on.

That does look like a good deal.  Most of my tri stuff is 2XU and it is very comfortable.  I haven't tried their wetsuits yet, but I have been thinking of getting a 2nd one with sleeves so I can do some of the earlier tri's in the area next year.  I like my sleeveless, but it isn't quite enough when the water gets below 60 degrees.  Enjoy it!

I think that is a common wish! I have worn mine for sprints without any problem, but I stopped as I didn't want to push my luck.  With the bike mount kit I just have it mounted on the bike and wear the chest strap for the swim.  I put the wrist band in the pocket of my shirt and towards the end of the bike start switching it over.

Got in to see my GP today.  He gave me Prednisone (5 pills for 2 days, 4 pills for 2 days, 3 pills for 2 days etc...) and a script for PT. (The PT I was seeing before is more of a massage place.)  The new PT is the one I went to for my IT band issues right before St. Anthony's last year.

So any0one have experiuence with Prednisone?

Isn't Rush Limbaugh down your way?  I heard that he was familiar with that!

Other wise, not much help from me.  Hopefully the treatment works!
