DH and I just took a 30 minute walk on the beach. Will run 2 or 3 tomorrow, and then start a reverse taper of my HIM plan for 2 weeks. After that, it's on!!

Oh and Stacie, I wonder if trekking is train running?

Subject: Counting laps
Hi everybody!
I'm gearing up my training and will be spending more time in the pool over the next couple of weeks. My problem is, since I'm still working on all the swimming details (arm/hand position, kick...breathing without swallowing water), that I get distracted and sometimes lose track of where I am in my lap count. Now I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the smartest guy around but I feel a little silly when I can't remember if I'm on lap nine or ten...

Anybody have any tricks they use to keep track of where they are in their lap count?

The pool where I train has some racks with beads on them that you can move to help you count your laps. Or if you have a watch with a chronograph, like a timex ironman watch or something similar, there's a lap button on it that you can press for each time you swim a lap. I could never keep track if I didn't have one or the other. I'm sure some of the others have some good ideas.

Art I think most people have dealt with that also.  I am sure there are hundreds of threads on here about counting laps in the pool.  I don't have that problem I swim so slow that it is hard to lose count.  I hope to get better at swimming so that counting laps does become a difficult thing.  That pool that has the beads that sounds like a good idea.

Check out this link: http://www2.shopping.com/xPO-Sportcount-Lap-Counter-Basic

It'... a ring that you put on your finger and push for each lap. I have that problem, too. I usually count 100's so I count every 2 times at the same side of the pool. When I have to do a 1000 meter time trial I always get it mixed up. My problem is that I love to  and have a tendency to "get lost" in the feel of the water and the techniques I'm working on, so my mind lets the lap numbers fly out of my brain.

I have the same problem with getting too into the groove and forgetting how many laps I've done. I have a little ziplock baggie of rocks I take to the pool with me now. The masters coach gave my tri buddy crap when she did it (they work together though, so that's a given...), but it has kinda caught on and we're not the only ones doing it. My rocks are actually those decorative glass stones used in centerpieces. Can't beat $1 in the craft section at walmart.

First-Happy Easter to all.

This past week was not a good training week for me. I only worked out 4 days. It was supposed to be a light week any way, so I don't feel too bad.

This week my husband is on vacation, so getting workouts in should be a little easier. I'll have to spend some time today mapping out how I'll fit everything in.

Any one else have struggles with balancing the workouts and family life/job?

I break my sets into groups of 5 in my head when counting. (even though I don't necessarily rest at 5). Even doing that, I sometimes lose count, so my default mode is to always assume I"m at the lower #. IE: If I can't remember if I"m at lap 3 or 4, I assume it's 3.  Somedays, I lose track a lot- I can tell because my times look really slow on those days!

One thing I'm a fan of is a structured workout that contains some drills instead of always just doing contiuous swimming.  I find swimming contiuous laps only can be a bit boring.

I also think it can make it a bit difficult to work on technique as you fatigue through the long sets.

I think drills are important for everyone, but especially if you are in the early stages of learning to swim, they can really help to break down the components of the swim, so you don't have to keep track of so many things at once.

There are a few great resources for swim workouts

1.  Workouts in a Binder: Swim Workouts for Triathletes (Spiral-bound). by Gail Bernhardt - it's pretty cool because you can take it right to the pool with you. It has a lot of workouts that focus on many different areas

2.  swimplan.com - it's a website that you can enter in your information, such as your speed, why you swim (tris, competitive swimming, etc) and it will generate a workout for you.  I've been using it quite a bit and really like the workouts - i don't love all the drills, so i often replace them with ones that are more specific to the things i need to work out

3.  BT has some great swim workouts as a part of their trianing plans.  To get the detailed ones, you have to have a performance membership, but I think it's worth it.  Not all the plans have detailed workouts for the swim, some of the - the free once just have time.  I tend to look for the ones that have detail.

just my 2 cents

mornin' manatees!

its another gloriously sunny day here in Western PA.  chilly, but sunny.  i just about to get my kids decked out for Easter Dinner, but i wanted to fly by real quick and say 'hey'

HEY!

i looked online at the GARMIN FORERUNNER 310XT.  have you all seen this yet???? its a swim proof Garmin specifically for triathletes.  [maybe im behind the times and you all know about it already....]

though a VERY expensive lap counter, it has some REALLY cool features for all three tri discipline, including a lap counter button.

anybody have one??

i'm adding it my list....

shawn, lauren, cathy, bill.  ALL.  thanks for the enthusiatic support of my endeavors and sharing your experiences with me.

SHAWN.  thanks for kayak stories.  though the thought of turning completely upside down in a kayak scares the begeezes out of me, its a BIG part of the intrigue, what draws me.

we have a boat, and i'd love to go out and let my husband 'drop' me off somewhere on the lake

while he takes the kids out tubing, ill enjoy the quiet waters, then he can come back and pick me up somewhere down the shoreline.

CATHY.  i was thinking the same thing, that trekking would be trail running.  im always amazed in a city, how many off the beaten path-trails there are.  PGH is a pretty cool that way.

BILL.  your adventure sounds really challenging.  i couldnt find my way out of a paper bag.....

LAUREN.  seems these types of races are cropping up everywhere (theres a ton in PGH alone...) i betcha you could find a race near you.  scrounge up a rag tag team and your ready to RACE!

as for this race....i read a looked a little closer at the fine print and realize that this a 3 person team competition and NOT a relay.

as much as i LOVE my husband, its one thing to pass a 'baton', were both agreed we could never do anything like this TOGETHER.    [just being honest/realistic]  i could do this w other friends or even 'strangers' but the man im married to....

HAVE ANY OF YOU WATCHED THE AMAZING RACE?  we LOVE the show, but know we would end up being the high-drama, bickering couple.  we just go about things VERY differently.

but racing together is NOT off the table....

weve decided were gonna do the PGH ADVENTURE TRI RELAY instead.  2 mile kayak, 12 mile bike and a 5K run, a traditional relay, 3 person teams, 1 person per leg.....[i think this what my husband and his boss thought the other URBAN ADVENTURE race was]

i'll still get to do the run.

im just glad there was alternative available.

DO YOUR CITIES/TOWNS HAVE LOTS OF RACES TO CHOOSE FROM?

DO YOU HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR FOR EVENTS?

PGH just seems like a great city for these sorts of ADVENTURES.  im consider myself really fortunate in that respect.  the weather sucks, but the city is an active one, and becoming even more so it seems....

Hey ya'll .... sorry I haven't really kept up but I've had a busy few days, and the idea of reading pages of old posts seems a little too daunting for a Sunday morning.

But in a nutshell - adventure races are fun! I did a season or two trail running races here, and I always ended up super dirty and it was sooooooo awesome!

Kayaking is a blast ... but like Shawn, after tipping over and being underwater my instincts are to get the h-e-double-hockey-sticks OUT OF THAT KAYAK and not waste precious time tapping five times. lol .... I went river-kayaking when I lived in the Rockies and spent most of my time upside down underwater going downstream with rocks whipping past my head ... now that I've moved to the Island I much prefer the nice gentle calm lake and ocean bay kayaking. The boats are bigger, too - less tippy.

Counting swim laps - never a problem for me as I swim slowly, and need to rest regularly ... and half the time I don't concern myself with laps, I just want to swim continuous for a set period of time without taking breaks.

Well - I'm off to enjoy a very relaxing Sunday ... it's pouring rain here, and I'm going to spend my morning lying on the couch reading a book, and my afternoon on the couch watching curling (Canada v Scotland again - but this time in the Finals! woot woot).

Pools and facilities are all closed today, and Mother Nature has provided a very heavy downpour - so I'm taking that as a sign. ;-)

There is a 3 month swim plan on here?  Where is it?  I new I should have renewed my membership.  So is it part of the bronze package or do I need to go up to Silver?

I am trying to find time to get some training back in.  Not having done it for awhile the time has been taken by family  committments and now it is hard to try and find the time to take back.  I really need to find a gym that opens up early enough so that I can get in there before work and I moved so I got to get on it and look around here.

Thanks so much for all the input on lap counting. There are some great ideas. I especially like the bag of rocks one. It's also nice to know I'm not the only one who has had that problem. I've got a watch with a chrono on it so I'm going to try that.

Whew!

Thanks Beth!! I have a question for you about the swim workouts in a binder. I have that nice little book and I find it very intimidating because I am only swimming 1100-2000 yds in any swim workout. I haven't found a workout in the book less than 2000 yds. Do you swim the full distance in that book or do you modify them to fit your time schedule? I typically swim on my lunch hour 2x's a week and am currently following a Matt Fitzgerald plan.
Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates! My hellacious bike ride is done for the day. It was really really windy here in the corn fields of Indiana!
