Sprint_DA - 2009-05-12 8:55 PM So how do y'all get through trainer rides?  It was getting too late to go out on the bike after I finished my run today, and the plan called for trainer time anyway.  I got through 30mins of an hour planned and just lost focus so bad I decided to call it.  I've no love for the trainer.

I also dislike the trainer, but find it a necessary evil living in NJ (plus I'm a weather wuss.) I have a dvd that is pretty good to ride along with.  It's from Vision Quest and is called Race Day.  You warm up, ride an actual criterium and cool down with guided effort.  You essentially try to ride (either via power meter, perceived effort, hr etc...all of which are continuously updated on the video.  Pretty engaging.  I have also downloaded some free podcasts from iTunes called "sufferfest".  I strap the iPod to my stem and ride along.  Usually has good intervals.   Good luck.  Trainers are really boring and it's easy to slack off on them.

Heh.  If there is ever a subject that I can offer you NO advice, it is the trainer.  I HATE HATE HATE it.    I was supposed to do intervals last Wednesday.  I lasted 2 minutes on the trainer.  Seriously, I hopped off in two minutes.  My entire workout was 48 minutes.  I couldn't stand the torture.

That being said, Kim is right.  You have to find something to distract you.  For me, I like doing intervals instead of long steady rides because it mixes it up.  Depending on your workout, you could look into Spinervals or Sufferfest downloads.  It has been my experience that I stay more engaged with those on.  I, personally, can't watch a movie or listen to an ipod.  It doesn't work for me.  Instead, I just spend most of the time counting down the time left until the workout is over.

Ditto here - I HATE, HATE, HATE the trainer.  Coach let me do a spin class this winter (taught by an IM) in place of the trainer.  Nice Dan.

I  HATE the trainer too.  I have a couple spinerval dvd's and I used to watch some of the race videos on BT when I was on it.  I don't have a choice in the winter, if I want to ride it's going to be the trainer.  I've done 2 hour trainer rides in the past.  I do intervals and workouts like ladders to break the time into shorter periods so I don't focus on the total time I have to ride.

Example:  20 min easy
4 X 1 min (each leg), one legged big gear low cadence with 1 min easy between each
10 min easy
5 X 4 min big gear low cadence with 2 min easy between
11 min easy

There's no really long intervals (except the 20 warmup, could probably do just 10 if you wanted) and it's a 1h 20 m bike workout.

Example 2:
Warm up 10 minutes.
Ladder intervals with 1 min recovery spin between them-
1min  hard, 1 spin
2min hard, 1 spin
3 min hard, 1 spin
4 min hard, 1 spin
5 min hard, 1 spin
6 min hard, 1 spin
5 min hard, 1 spin
4 min hard, 1 spin
3 min hard, 1 spin
2 min hard, 1 spin
1 min hard
10 easy cool down
--------------------
66 minute total

Thanks everyone.  The worst part about it all was that it called for low effort/small gear work.  I need to start running before work so that I can get the long bikes in more quickly afterward.

My coach KNOWS I will not do a trainer workout more than 60 minutes.  My attention span is about 25 when I am on there.  If I can get through the warm up then I am good.  A typical workout looks like this

WU:  10' z1/z2
5' of 30" on/off intensities
5' of steady z2 riding
5x3' in z3/z4 with 1' rest between sets
CD:  10' z1/z2

It stays mixed up enough that I don't complete zone out.

Looks like my workout for tonite only it's 5x4 min in Z4 (which I hope I can get to - been having trouble lately on the bike) and on the road as opposed to the drainer.  But just as boring no matter where you do it!

I'm racing this weekend - doing an OLY.  A little nervous as usual about the swim but not too bad cause it's wetsuit legal.  After that I'm also wondering how I'll hold up on the run.  Gotta keep remembering that everything is training for Sept HIM.

Andrew - good luck on your TT.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Melissa, incredible pictures.  Midwest storms are scary.

My week wasn't great.  I got less done than planned, but under the circumstances am ok with it.  One of my major projects at work was unexpectedly shut down and the company lost 50% of our market cap in a day.  Not good.   Some seriously late nights in the office. Followed by a not serious, but "ugly cleansing" bout of food poisoning....I am never, never, never, eating from that salad bar again.  Focusing this weekend on re-hydrating and resting.  Will try for an easy bike in the morning and possibly a short run on Sunday before heading to the airport.  I'm in EU again next week, but just saw that my hotel is 100meters from the ocean.  Won't have much free time, but I'm determined to fit in an OWS while there.

Hope everyone else is having less drama.

Mentally not quite as sharp as usual, but that's just fatigue.  Physically, I'm pretty well shot.

Well, I can't believe that tomorrow is the big day for me, and I have had a really bad week (very little running/biking/swimming).  I am still so excited and nervous that I am going to make a fool out of myself.  I went and checked out the route, and I am a really scared about the bike.  It is pretty hilly and I have only practiced on flat land. On the other hand, I am so proud of myself just for making the commitment to do this.  Good luck to everyone esle who races this weekend!

Don't worry about not having done much this week.  It wouldn't have helped and could just as easily hurt.  Have fun and make sure you post how it went!!  Good luck.

I'm no expert on nutrition and have made my fair share of mistakes.  The one general rule to follow is don't eat anything you've not tried in training.  New foods or sports drinks can wreak havoc.  I generally have a bagel with peanut butter and a banana 2 hours before the start of a sprint. Plus, hydrate..hydrate...hydrate.  A cup of coffee also helps if you need to get things moving so to speak.  Your's is a mini-sprint, so you shouldn't need much of anything during the race except water.   Many events have bananas, oranges, bagels etc for the participants at the post race party.  All are good post workout fuel.  I also re-fuel with Endurox post hard workouts for recovery.  Have to admit though after a race I can rationalize anything I want.  That has ranged from ice cream to french fries.Embarassed

Relax and enjoy the race.  You will feel a great sense of accomplishment afterwards.

I echo everything Kim said.  The KEY is to NOT try anything new.  I too am a fan of a PB bagel and banana.  You should definitely sip on some thing while you are driving and setting up.  I suggest a sports drink if you enjoy those.  During the race, you may or may not want to use a gel on the bike.  In all likelihood you will be fine.  Put a bottle of Gatorade/sports drink on the bike and sip on that for a few extra calories.

On the hills, get into your easiest gear and just spin you way to the top.  Don't worry about other people.  Focus on YOUR race only.  And have FUN!!!!

Congrats to Lisa B!!!  Jessica, make sure you post how today's race went.

Had a nice surprise today.  I wound up running in a local 5k this morning.  Was a last minute thing.  Weather was cool and I felt good, so I pushed it a bit.  I wound up taking 2+ minutes off my best 5k pace which was run just prior to the half mary training in February.  Mind you, I am still veeerrrry slow but I am two minutes faster than I used to be.  Surprised

Still had enough left to play in my soccer league this afternoon.  We remain undefeated, but most importantly no injuries on the field this week. Last week was pure carnage.

Hope everyone gets off to a good start this week.
