Inspire ettique question for this mentor group......I know if you receive an inspire in your training log and you reply it only stays in your training log.
  • So, is the proper form to return the inspire and respond with an inspire in the sender's training log with the answer or response to the challenge?
  • Or should you just respond on the original inspire in your log and let the sender come back to get the answer.

New to this group and I know everybody does thing a little different. Maybe Birdy should give us some groundrules or someone can inform the FNG's (for all you military people) how it was done last year.

Thanks
Dino

I would tell you, but then I would have to kill you. Wink Actually, I don't think we had a rule on this. Everyone did it their own way. We don't have a lot of rules here. Just try to post all your workouts in your training log and TRY to be respectful of each other. (That means tone down the risque pics and comments.)

you would respond to their blog normally.

LOL, lots and lots of posts.

for trainer rides, even on the Computrainer, I watch something online. Either DVD, or bring up Hulu and find any of their Kona or Clearwater coverage, or on Universalsports.com I watch 2009 giro stages or sometimes they have some ITU races also.

As far as the cassette goes if you are interested here is a good chart about RPM vs. Speed on different gear ratio's.

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/

I have a 12-25 on my tri-bike and like it a lot, though you can never have too many cassette's. Agree with Ryan, Dura-Ace Cassette's just aren't worth the extra cost for the small bit of weight savings you gain.

Oh and I like posting bike porn.

ground rules? wtf is that?

lol! the first bullet is correct. sometimes you might hit the wrong button but you really want to put what you are sending where it belongs... in other words you're not inspiring yourself.

AF_SGT - 2009-12-14 7:03 PM Alrighty then, heres the first question....

I have a 2006 Fuji Team Pro, that sadly hasn't had many miles put on it I bought it new with ultegra/dura ace mix components for my first season in 2007. Great bike, LOVE it! Now, the bike came equipped with an 11-23 gearing, I find myself constantly in the lowest gears, and still struggling. Should I..(A) Tough it out knowing it will get easier and make me stronger in the long run, or (B) exchange for a 12-27 gearing?

Just curious what the cycling experts say, as I dont know my head from a hole in the ground when it comes to cycling.

Oh, and here is a pic.....because we all love bike porn....

Beautiful bike... I love me some good bike porn! Well, assuming you've got a standard crankset (53/39) and not a compact (typically 50/34), a 11-23 in the rear can be pretty manly gearing. The 12-27 certainly makes it easier to spin up a serious hill, but I'd also take a look at a 11-25. In my mind, there's very little to be gained by grinding out a low gearing. If you were in the 39/23, at 60 rpm, you'd be going a little over 8 mph. With the 39/25, you'd be going 10% slower, and the /27 would be 8% slower still. It may not sound like much, but that's a pretty substantial reduction in effort to keep the bike moving up a steep grade without toppling over. There have been very few times when I completely spun out of gearing. Doing the same calculation as above, at 100 rpm, a 53/12 equals 34 mph while a 53/11 is 37 mph. So you're giving up about 10% speed on the top end to get 10% on the low end. In my mind, that's usually a good tradeoff unless you're doing a pretty flat course (IMAZ, IMFL, Lonestar, Boise, etc.) Also, I tend to go with the Ultegra cassettes (or even 105 for my training wheelset) vs. Dura-Ace since the latter is often twice the price to save about 60 grams and will wear faster.

I was going to answer that question but I think I will abstain at this point. Yea...what he said.

gdctex - 2009-12-14 8:48 PM

I have not decided which races yet. There is one in the Woodlands in April, then Bridgeland in August, and probably Andy's Tri again for nostalgic reasons (and to see if I improved over this year's results....). I am open to suggestions for good sprint tri's in the Houston area.

I started riding in Bush Park last fall...when the trail is not flooded. For now, I am using the spinning bike at the gym in anticipation of getting a real bike in early 2010. I used an old trail bike I bought at Academy years ago for that first tri and was dead last in my age group for the bike....its the bike, right? I mean, it was really slooow....

Anyway, thanks for the welcome! I have learned so much already....about Canadians and how beer appears to be a part of the tri training regiment...hmm, not sure I have seen that anywhere else.

great! here's a few links for you to peruse when you get a chance, if you haven't already.

BT Texas forum. What the name says, talks about what is going on around the state. There are two main groups, Houston and Dallas and you'll notice that we tend to talk to each other. Some really good people here.

this is the largest tri club in town. all sizes and shapes and ages belong. for the most part its all good people but there are a few cliques. i don't make to many meeting's just because of family and its usually downtown somewhere. there is a small group of us that get together fairly regularly for races, rides, and ows.

288 lake. best place in town for open water swim. its got it own thread in the texas forum. when a BT'er is heading down he/she will post when and what time. you'll want a wetsuit this time of the year but in the spring and summer you will not want one. tentatively i'm heading there on the 3 january. you're more than welcome to join us.

trifind you can find a bunch of texas races here. 2010 calendar isn't fully populated yet. BT's calendar function is jsut as good too once you get the hang of it. it tends to be a little quirky. the awesome thing about BT calendar though is the links to other BTer's race reports.

as far as CB&I., the race in the woodlands. i think you have to check your bike in the night before which is a real pain in the butt unless of course you live up there.

Bridgelands is an awesome race. and its right by my house.

of course several people from this group are coming in for Lone Star in April.

I don't think they are CC but I think they are deaf-friendly. The Spinervals DVDs show several text sections on the screen so you would know when to shift gears and pedal harder.

CyborgQueen - 2009-12-15 12:50 AM

...I'm hoping to get one or two Spinervals soon. Do you know if it's Closed Captioned or Deaf-friendly? (meaning, can I see the speed, cadence, RPE on the screen visually?)

losta - 2009-12-14 10:17 PM I have been doing spinervals and find them quite motivating. I was going to do Jorge's winter training but I find the spinervals give me more incentive. I have about a dozen of the DVDs (spinervals and real rides) I've only watched a few so far. The most I've done on the trainer is 1 hour. I have ridden on the roads for over 3 hours but I find it hard on the trainer to go long. Lisa-AKA losta
ashort33 - 2009-12-14 11:53 PM

losta - 2009-12-14 10:22 PM Who here is riding a trainer for the winter? If so what do you do while on the trainer? Do you listen to music, watch TV, movies, Spinervals and such, etc? How long do you usually spend on the trainer? Lisa AKA losta

I am doing Jorge's winter cycling plan - plenty of interval work and some longer steady efforts as well. I like it! You can find it over in the challenge forum. After last season I realized I needed to work on maintaining a higher effort level longer on the bike - Jorge's plan seemed to fit the bill!

Andy

I have a few Ironman DVD's from the last few years. I throw them in the dvd player for motivation. Ipod if I'm doing a high intensisty workout that i need to focus on.
I'm also in with a bike group once a week. Its mainly people from my tri-team, so its fun to ride and chat.
Its cold up here, so nothing doing outside.

Wow, I'm 4 pages behind already.....

Sarge - I'm not even going to compete with what Ryan said about the cassette, but here is my ENGLISH advise. If you find yourself mashing on the gears too often then by all means, switch cassettes. I am a big believer in the power of a fast spin and if you can't maintain a high cadance you will be toast for the run. Keep the 12-23 if you fitness changes or the elevation change calls for it. In short, flat roads = big gears; hilly = small gears. And I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think getting a new cassette is cheaper than a triple crank.

Lisa (losta) I ride my trainer mainly for endurace purposes. I get good interval and hill work on my roads and I do spin classes as well. For me the trainer is used the most for long steady rides. When I was training for my half I put a movie on after the kids went to bed and did 2.5 to 3 hours. This taught me to ride on tired legs and develop muscle memory for being in the aero position. I tried to keep my cadance around 90 (race goal cadance). Just remember to hydrate more on the trainer. You don't have the wind cooling your body like you do on the road so you will sweat a lot more on the trainer. If you average 1 bottle / hour outside it should be at least 1 and 1/2 bottles / hour on the trainer.

Doug - great job on your running progress.

Dino - I believe the inspire response will show up in the other person's log, providing you hit the reply button.

p.s. forgot my name TRACY

Okay, hopefully I did my last DUMB TRAINING MOVE OF 2009! My physical therapist gave me the green light for water running so I did some after my laps last night. Now my toes are ripped to shreds!! Then I thought I would be smart and cover the pads of my toes with Mole Skin for spin class this morning. The cushoning felt good but removing the moleskin was like pulling ducktape off a burn!!!

Moral of the story......when doing water running, wear water shoes!!!!!!!! OUCH!

Tracy- OUCH! I will probably end up water running soon but currently I'm still pretending the elliptical is going to help me get back on the road. I hate the pool. If you get the water belt you can do your running in the deep end and not worry about your feet.

Hope they heal quickly.

WOW, us girls are a mess! I was told I could water run and after two sessions decided I would rather bike more! Tomorrow I get to run on an Alter G for the first time. One of the PT offices in Madison is getting a new one and they need a guinea pig to test it out. I don't fully understand how it works, but they call it the anti gravity TM. I will be able to run with about 20lbs of load. Not sure if the foot will like it, but am going to give it a go.

Robert -- we are living parallel lives. My kids are the same ages, and my son is the same name as your town! Nice to meet you!

I forgot to put this in my bio, but I live outside of Seattle (Eastside). The rain is making a lovely noise on my skylights as I type... Tomorrow's run will be a muddy one (or not if I choose to go sidewalks).

I have nothing to add to the cassette/trainer discussions, but I am curious about rollers! I have a set but haven't had the time to try it out yet (long story short, I'm still looking for the right pedals for my new bike).

How long is it going to take to get comfortable on rollers? Will I be able to put in long rides like a trainer? Am I going to kill myself riding a tri bike on rollers when I'm really only an average cyclist??

Hey everyone - I have nothing to add to the present conversation because I'm a true "beginner." However, I do HAVE to listen to my ipod when spinning. Anything else and I get bored.

I have a question for all you experts: I've been reading a lot about delaying the running portion of your training program if you have a lot of weight to lose. I am kind of feeling not too comfortable while running (jogging) right now, as I've currently got a lot of junk bouncing around (lol!), and I certainly don't want to injure myself!! I have 50lbs to lose. What do you guys think would be the best approach for me regarding the run? Should I concentrate on my swim, bike, and diet right now then add running in the last 8-10 weeks of my training program? Is that enough time? (Training for a sprint only)

Also, I neeeeeeed a good diet plan. If I'm going to delay my running training, I need to make sure that I lose weight in the interim. Will the increased swimming and cycling be enough, or do I need to make sure I'm on a strict diet also? If so, anyone have ideas on diets?

On that note: I've lost 3 pounds since last week!
